Book excerpt: In July 1965, a U.S. Coast Guard unit designated as squadron 1 arrived in the waters of South Vietnam to form the key link in a unique coastal surveillance force. The arrival of that unit marked the inception of "Operation Market Time," a joint Navy-Coast Guard mission designed to prevent North Vietnam from infiltrating men and materials of war to the Vietcong. Since 1965, Coast Guard duties in that area of the world have gradually expanded in scope and importance.

Book excerpt: Join the 18 officers and 6 enlisted men of the US Coast Guard involved in the initial stages of Operation Tight Reign, a top secret mission into the unknown, from late 1965 at US Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, DC, to the rugged highlands of Northern Thailand and into the thick jungles of a little country at war, Vietnam. Operation Tight Reign saved the lives of many US fliers shot down in hostile territories in Southeast Asia, created pinpoint bombing of crucial North Vietnamese military infrastructure, and provided deadly low-level air support for our ground troops. Operation Tight Reign ushered in the age of smart bombs, the self-guided munitions so prevalent in the news today in the fight against ISIS and other radical groups in the Mid-East.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Naval Institute Chronicles series focuses on the relevance of history by exploring topics like significant battles, personalities, and service components. Tapping into the U.S. Naval Institute's robust archives, these carefully selected volumes help readers understand nuanced subjects by providing unique perspectives and some of the best contributions that have helped shape naval thinking over the many decades since the Institute’s founding in 1873. Among the various aspects of the U.S. Navy’s “in-country” experiences in Vietnam, small-craft operations are among the most significant. Revealed in this collection from the Naval Institute’s archives are Operations Market Time, Game Warden, and SEALORDS, as well some lesser-known aspects of the Navy’s iconoclastic venture into the green and brown waters of Southeast Asia.

Book excerpt: War in the Shallows, published in 2015 by the Naval History and Heritage Command, is the authoritative account of the U.S. Navy's hard-fought battle along Vietnam's rivers and coastline from 1965-1968. At the height of the U.S. Navy's involvement in the Vietnam War, the Navy's coastal and riverine forces included more than 30,000 Sailors and over 350 patrol vessels ranging in size from riverboats to destroyers. These forces developed the most extensive maritime blockade in modern naval history and fought pitched battles against Viet Cong units in the Mekong Delta and elsewhere. War in the Shallows explores the operations of the Navy's three inshore task forces from 1965 to 1968. It also delves into other themes such as basing, technology, tactics, and command and control. Finally, using oral history interviews, it reconstructs deckplate life in South Vietnam, focusing in particular on combat waged by ordinary Sailors. Vietnam was the bloodiest war in recent naval history and War in the Shallows strives above all else to provide insight into the men who fought it and honor their service and sacrifice. Illustrated throughout with photographs and maps. Author John Darrell Sherwood has served as a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) since 1997. -- Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many books have been published on the Vietnam War, this is the first to chronicle the significant contributions of America's smallest armed service in that conflict. The U.S. Coast Guard worked and fought alongside its sister services for ten years, conducting a wide range of operations that have remained until now largely unknown to the public. In May 1965 Coast Guard cutters engaged the Viet Cong in the service's first combat since World War II, and it was not until April 1975 that it shut down its last LORAN-C station in Vietnam. Alex Larzelere's vivid, fast-paced depictions of combat operations along Vietnam's coasts and in the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta benefit from his own service in Vietnam as a patrol boat skipper and from his interviews with seventy-five other Coast Guardsmen who were there. These on-the-scene descriptions together with the author's exhaustive research in official and private archives add up to a comprehensive picture of the Coast Guard's wartime operations - operations that included junk and trawler interdiction, downed-pilot search and rescue, naval gunfire support, port security, merchant marine and navigation assistance, and training and support for the South Vietnamese Navy. Also documented here for the first time are the high-level negotiations among leaders of the Navy, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard that provided for the employment of unique Coast Guard capabilities. Illustrated with dozens of official and private photos, many never before published, this landmark history fills an important hole in the literature of both the Coast Guard and the Vietnam War and establishes a blueprint for future joint military cooperation. Scholarly in its approach yet written with verve and drama to appeal to a wider audience, the book sets the highest standard for military histories.

This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that everyone is at most six steps away from, or connected to, any other person on Earth. While the Vietnam War was raging, silver bracelets were created to raise awareness of, and show support for, American servicemen who were prisoners of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA). After the war, black bracelets were produced to pay homage to any of our armed forces killed in action (KIA). The orange bracelet is more recent and symbolizes all those, living and deceased, who have suffered from diseases, combat wounds, and post traumatic stress resulting from their Vietnam service. These bracelets honor the memory and sacrifice of our troops—one of the central goals of this book. In December 2009, John Siegfried discovered the silver POW/MIA bracelet that his mother-in-law had worn for over 20 years. Curiosity urged him to contact the person named on the bracelet, a contact that inspired him profoundly and set him on a path that resulted in this book. Colonel Myron Donald willingly shared the story of both his service and imprisonment as a POW in Vietnam. In a personal meeting with Colonel Donald, Siegfried learned the harrowing details of how Donald overcame over five years imprisonment in the horrid conditions of North Vietnamese prisons. This story opened his eyes to the harsh reality and bitter tragedy of a savage war and inspired him to begin researching the stories of others affected by the Vietnam War. This book contains many of those stories, as well as compelling insights into Siegfried’s own journey of discovery. All interviews within this book are true accounts and were conducted in person throughout the United States. You will be riveted by the indescribable stories told by veterans, about veterans, and for veterans, and by the families of the lost or still missing MIAs. More than 3,400,000 men and women served in Southeast Asia. Although close to 60 percent of all Vietnam veterans who served in-country are no longer alive, the families of all these veterans will continue to be affected by the Vietnam War for generations. This book illustrates the misery and despair experienced by both soldiers and victims of this visceral war, but also the exhilaration of combat, and the camaraderie felt, during their respective tours, to present day. The understanding of warfare, combined with the appreciation of all the elements derived from combat, is necessary to better comprehend the effects of battle on those who have sworn to protect our country. Even if our soldiers did not incur flesh wounds, they may have suffered irreparable damage to their emotions, their psyche, and their soul. We civilians may never know or be able to comprehend the degradation caused to their human spirit and the violence and brutality they encountered. We need also to continue to support these men and women in the aftermath of their courageous service.
