Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Asian studies, grade: A, Presidency College, Kolkata, course: Masters, language: English, abstract: Textile industry held a pre-dominant position in the economic history of India. The industrial revolution had an over-whelming impact on domestic industries leading to far-reaching repercussions in the economic sphere. B.R Tomlinson in his work, Economy of Modern India, 1860-1970 points out that at the beginning of the English rule the Indian handicraft and textile industries used to supply about a quarter of all manufactured goods produced in the world. The domestic industries contributed to the majority of chief export items of the European trade. With the start of the Industrial revolution in the west, India’s status as the chief supplier of textiles to the world relegated to the background. India became the dumping ground of raw materials for the rising English Industries. At the same time the country was a potential market for the influx of British manufactures. There is a considerable quantitative data from south, Central and Eastern India hinting at the general decline in textile production. The English industrialization had a subversive effect on spinning and home spun commodities. The Lancashire produced fine quality yarn had somehow wrecked the possibilities of yarn spinning in India. Tirthankar Roy points out that cotton textile is the most important example of craft threatened by steam-power technology, or of pre-modern industry threatened by industrializing Britain .
Book Synopsis International Competition and Strategic Response in the Textile Industries SInce 1870 by : Mary B. Rose
Download or read book International Competition and Strategic Response in the Textile Industries SInce 1870 written by Mary B. Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of essays, which draws on the expertise of leading textile scholars in Britain and the United States, focuses on the problem of and responses to foreign competition in textiles from the late nineteenth century to the present day. A short introductory essay by the editor is followed by a survey of the debates surrounding the British cotton industry, foreign competition and competitive advantage. The other essays consider various aspects of that competition, including textile machine-making, Lancashire perceptions of the rise of Japan during the inter-war period and responses to foreign competition in the British cotton industry since 1945, whilst others deal with the decline and rise of merchanting in UK textiles and European competition in woollen yarn and cloth from 1870 to 1914. A recurring theme in a number of the essays is Japanese competitive advantage in textiles. The book is unique since although there are numerous books dealing with the problems of British staple industries, none focuses primarily on the issue of competition, its sources and responses, nor on textiles in general rather than a single industry. Moreover, since the scope is international rather than limited only to the UK, it follows recent trends in British busines history away from single company case studies towards a more thematic, comparative approach. In addition, the international authorship of these papers gives this book, first published in 1991, wide appeal.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the progress and performance of the wool textile industry, both nationally and in various regions where it was concentrated. It examines the development of the industry in terms of its structure and location, its transition to factory production, its use of raw materials and new technology, and the variety of its finished products. It considers the competitive position of the industry in home and foreign markets both in the halcyon days of trade expansion and in the changing economic circumstances after 1870. The authors review the differing fortunes of woollens and worsteds, the rise of low woollens and the decline of some of the traditional wool textile manufacturing districts. Whilst highlighting the difficulties encountered by the industry, the overall conclusion of the volume is an optimistic one in terms of entrepreneurial performance and adaptability in production methods and to market circumstances. It is the first overall study of the economic history of the industry nationally from the Industrial Revolution to the First World War. The volume will be of great interest to economic historians and to all interested in the history of technology, the development of design, costume and fashion and to local historians in those many parts of Britain where wool textile manufacture was carried out.
