Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Vol. 2 of 2 When, in the providence of God, the church has been properly disciplined, we shall see it enter upon the great work of evangelization. We shall follow it into the new states and territories, and trace in each its rise and progress. We shall see its printing establishment rising, its schools of learning struggling into life, its missionary society organized, and sending out scores of efficient la borers. And, at the end of the period, instead of a handful of zealous German Christians, melting away before ad verse in uences, breaking up the fallow-ground and sow ing that others might reap, doubtful of their own con tinned existence as a separate people, we shall see a thoroughly organized church of nearly a hundred thou sand members, united, earnest, and zealous; with a pious, intelligent and energetic ministry, excellent educational, publishing, and missionary organizations, and a healthy denominational spirit. And we shall discover that all this progress is but the development of that life in the soul which comes from union with Christ, and which made United Brethren in Christ of Otterbein, Boehm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United Brethren Endeavorer: A Manual for United Brethren Christian Endeavor Workers The first manual for United Brethren Christian Endeavor workers entitled "Effective Endeavor" was written by Henry F. Shupe, D.D., editor of the Watchword, in 1915. The edition issued at that time has been exhausted. There seems to be need, as there is constant demand for such a manual. The conference on Young People's work held in Dayton, Ohio, October 17-20, 1922, attended by sixty leading representatives of the Young People's work of the denomination, expressed the conviction that a book of this character is essential to effective service by the workers among our young people. There being so many changes in plans of work since Effective Endeavor was written, they therefore requested the author of this volume to undertake the preparation of a new publication. Since the author also recognizes the need for a book of this kind, and since there was none available, and since his own heart experienced a real burden to carry a message of practical plans to our faithful workers, gladly, but hesitatingly, he undertook this heavy responsibility. The volume is sent forth with the earnest prayer that it may serve the purpose intended and be a real blessing to all who seek its help. Acknowledgment of valuable suggestions in the preparation of this book, obtained from the publications of the United Society of Christian Endeavor is gratefully given. The books especially helpful were "Officers' Handbook," by Amos R. Wells, "The Christian Endeavor Manual," by Francis E. Clark, "The New Junior Worker's Manual," by R. P. Anderson, and "Expert Endeavor," by Amos R. Wells. Material was also secured from Epworth League Methods by Dan Brummit. Editor H. F. Shupe gave helpful counsel and his book "Effective Endeavor" was used as a guide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ The desire for a new history first found official expression in a resolution adopted by the General Conference of 1889, authorizing the publisher and trustees of the Publishing House to secure its preparation. No one being found who was willing to take up what seemed a rather formidable responsibility, the quadrennium passed without a beginning being made, and the General Conference of 1893 renewed the action of 1889. Under this authority, in May, 1894, the present writer was appointed to undertake the work. The task was accepted with a full sense of the responsibility involved, but with the hope that in due time it might be accomplished. He began early to make preparation for the work, collecting materials through extensive correspondence and from all other available sources. Other duties claiming a portion of his time, such as the care of a large congregation for nearly a year, and afterward of the Sunday-school literature of the Church, the writing itself proceeded with deliberation, a fact which the author trusts has resulted in advantage to the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the United Brethren Publishing House: Historical and Descriptive; With Numerous Illustrations More than half a century has passed since the founding of the Publishing House of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Reports of its condition and progress have been made from time to time, and occasionally the Church periodicals, notably the Religious Telescope, have given interesting accounts of its origin and history. Hanby and Lawrence record the beginnings, and the "Handbook of the United Brethren in Christ," issued in 1885, presents a brief outline. The "History of Dayton," published in 1889, contains an excellent and accurate history of the House, but it is necessarily much condensed, and its circulation is limited to a small edition, sold only by subscription. The magnitude of this department of the Church's work suggests the importance of collecting into a convenient volume, for )reservation and ready reference, not only the essential materials contained in the above books, but also a large amount of information which at present is not accessible to the members of the Church in any form, and some of which has never before been secured. The materials for a complete history of the House are sufficient to make a large volume; and while the future historian may undertake to give them a more critical and comprehensive treatment than would be proper at this time, it is reasonable to presume that for the present the Church will be interested in a survey which, though incomplete, and offering chiefly a collection of facts without critical comment, is fuller than anything yet published. Such a survey is here attempted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The first novel in the adventure-filled epic Fortunes of France, one of France's best-loved historical fiction series, now translated into English for the first time The PĂ©rigord of 16th century France is a wild region on the edge of the reaches of royal authority. To this beautiful but dangerous country come two veterans of the French king's wars, Jean de Siorac and Jean de Sauveterre, The Brethren-as fiercely loyal to the crown as they are to their Huguenot religion. They make their home in the formidable chateau of Mespech, and the community they found prospers. We meet the fiery Isabelle, mistress of the castle, refusing to renounce her religious beliefs despite great pressure; the petty and meal-mouthed Francois, unlikely heir to the estate; the brave and loyal Jonas who lives in a cave and keeps a wolf as a pet; the swaggering soldier Cabusse; and the outrageously superstitious Maligou, and Sarrazine, who once roamed as part of a wild gypsy band. But the country is descending into chaos, plagued by religious strife, famine, pestilence, bands of robbers... and, of course, the English. The Brethren must use all their wits to protect those they love from the chaos that threatens to sweep them away. A sprawling, earthy tale of violence and lust, love and death, political intrigue and dazzling philosophical debate, The Brethren is the first step in an engrossing saga to rival Dumas, Flashman and Game of Thrones.
