Book excerpt: This publication was written to provide a source for archaeological projectile point typology for a region of the U.S. that over the years has been traditionally divided into: Northeast culture area Middle Atlantic culture area Southeastern culture area These divisions are based primarily on lithic technology and settlement patterns. While this focus tends to serve archaeological investigations, most of the prehistoric Indian habitation/occupation requires greater definition and appraisal from other sources within the archaeological community. Even among artifact collectors, there is a tendency to parcel these areas into the classic culture area concepts. This publication makes no attempts to refocus archaeology, but to show the vast overlaps of numerous point technologies. This is especially true over time; so that, for lithic point technology in general, there is a Panindian focus that can be applied to almost every tool type along the Atlantic Coast. This publication provides most of the published types from along the Atlantic seaboard. Each type has a basic description and the illustration is an ideal point for that type. A set of point references is provided; these make excellent (and needed) sources for the study of projectile point studies.

Book excerpt: The American Southwest is the focus for this volume in Noel Justice's series of reference works that survey, describe, and categorize the projectile point and cutting tools used in prehistory by Native American peoples. Written for archaeologists and amateur collectors alike, the book describes over 50 types of stone arrowhead and spear points according to period, culture, and region. With the knowledge of someone trained to fashion projectile points with techniques used by the Indians, Justice describes how the points were made, used, and re-sharpened. His detailed drawings illustrate the way the Indians shaped their tools, what styles were peculiar to which regions, and how the various types can best be identified. There are hundreds of drawings, organized by type cluster and other identifying characteristics. The book also includes distribution maps and color plates that will further aid the researcher or collector in identifying specific periods, cultures, and projectile types.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists that study early Paleoindians in North America rarely get the chance to step back and review the 'big picture' quantitatively. With the advent of GIS and the techniques within ESRI's ArcMap, mapping distributions of archaeological material has become increasingly successful. Where supply and mobility range maps in the past were generally conceptions of the archaeologist, this thesis goes one step further, taking the study from qualitative, to quantitative. With the help of statistical correlation tests, histogram bar graphs, and spatial interpolation, the mobility ranges of the early Paleoindian groups in eastern North America (Clovis and Gainey cultures) was described. Two datasets; one including resharpening information, and the other including density data; were compiled in order to look at the supply range of two frequently used high quality raw materials that outcrop in central Ohio: Upper Mercer and Flint Ridge flint. This supply range is then theoretically tested against two mobility models frequently suggested for early Paleoindians; the first assumes these groups were strictly tethered to their raw material source, and the other suggests that these highly mobile hunter gatherers were frequently using a single lithic outcrop, but also utilizing different locations on the landscape to procure other needed resources.
