Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two First Centuries of Florentine History: The Republic and Parties at the Time of Dante This concluding volume treats of the revolution that took its name from Giano della Bella, and completed the overthrow of the feudal nobility. It then goes on to describe the ensuing and, perhaps, most involved and difficult period of Florentine history. Old parties are now transformed, while a larger and ever increasing number of divisions and subdivisions makes it very diffi cult to trace the general outline of events which are indeed so tangled and interlaced that it is often impossible to distinguish where any one of them begins or comes to an end. Yet the period has an extraordinary significance. It is not only the moment in which the mediaeval Com mune entered on the process of disintegration that prepared the way for the society of the Renaissance, but it also marks the hour when Italian art and literature sprang into being, and in which we behold Dante Alighieri filling a gigantic place and taking a very active part in the noisy chaos of political affairs. Unless those affairs be well comprehended, it were impossible to arrive at any clear appreciation of Dante's life and works. We have there fore attempted to condense those events in such wise as to bring their organic unity to the reader's notice, and afford the best elucidation in our power of their meaning and purpose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do modern republics have to fear? Machiavelli's Florentine Republic reconstructs Machiavelli's answer to this question from the perspective of the Florentine Histories, his most probing meditation on the fate of republican politics in the modern age. It argues that his principle goal in narrating the defeat of Florentine republicanism is to debunk the views of leading humanists concerning the overall health of republican politics in modernity and the distinctive challenges that modern republics should expect to face. The Medici family had exposed these vulnerabilities better than anyone else, and Machiavelli reconstructs their political strategy to show how conventional ideas of moral and political virtue are the most potent instruments of princely ambition in a city that wants to be free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante's political thought has long constituted a major area of interest for Dante studies, yet the poet's political views have traditionally been considered a self-contained area of study and viewed in isolation from the poet's other concerns. Consequently, the symbolic and poetic values which Dante attaches to political structures have been largely ignored or marginalised by Dante criticism. This omission is addressed here by Claire Honess, whose study of Dante's poetry of citizenship focuses on more fundamental issues, such as the relationship between the individual and the community, the question of what it means to be a citizen, and above all the way in which notions of cities and citizenship enter the imagery and structure of the Commedia.
