Book excerpt: The two-dimensional incompressible mixing layer was investigated by using constant temperature, linearized hot wire anemometers. The measurements were divided into three categories: (1) the conventional average measurements, (2) time-average measurements in the turbulent and the non-turbulent zones, and (3) ensemble average measurements conditioned to a specific location of the interface. The turbulent energy balance was constructed twice, once using the conventional results and again using the turbulent zone results. Some differences transpired between the two sets of results. It appears that the mixing region can be divided into two regions, one on the high velocity side which resembles the outer part of a wake and the other on the low velocity side which resembles a jet. The binding turbulent-non-turbulent interfaces seem to move independently of each other. There is a strong connection between the instantaneous location of the interface and the axial velocity profile. Indeed the well known exponential mean velocity profile never actually exists at any given instant. In spite of the complexity of the flow the simple concepts of eddy viscosity and eddy diffusivity appear to be valid within the turbulent zone. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the two-dimensional incompressible mixing layer was carried-out. The measurements provide new information on the development of the mean and turbulent fields towards a self-preserving state and on the higher-order statistical characteristics of the turbulent field. The revelance of initial conditions on the development of the flow is discussed in view of both present and previous data. Measurements of spectra, probability densities and moments to eigth order of all three velocity component fluctuations at various transverse position across the flow were carried-out using an on-line digital data acquisition system. The probability density distributions of the derivative and the derivative squared of the longitudinal and lateral velocity fluctuations were also determined. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The effect of the initial boundary layer upon the downstream growth of the turbulent mixing layer between two streams is studied experimentally. Two streams are studied experimentally. Two conditions are carefully documented--in one case the boundary layers at separation are laminar; in the other case one boundary layer is made turbulent with a trip wire. When the boundary layer is turbulent, the lateral length scale, theta, characterizing the thickness of the mixing region, grows more slowly. At 400-500 initial momentum thicknesses downstream, the growth rate relaxes toward--but does not meet--the growth rate of the untripped mixing layer. The lateral distributions of turbulence quantities, when scaled with the local lateral thickness, achieve the same form at distances beyond approximately 800 momentum thicknesses. (Author).

Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental investigation has been conducted of the pressure distribution on the surface of either a circular cylinder or a truncated cone located within the base region of another circular cylinder at Mach number 2. A similar analysis of pressure distribution was made for rearward-facing two-dimensional steps, and theoretical results were compared with experimental results of earlier investigations. Theoretical base-pressure ratios of two-dimensional steps agreed well with experimental results; however, as a result of the simplifying assumptions made for axisymmetric configurations, only a range of values for theoretical base-pressure ratio could be calculated within which the experimental results were expected to occur. The data generally followed the trends predicted by the theory, and deviations apparently could be explained.

The Organizing Committee was assisted by the Institute of Problems of Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, by the Research Institute for Mechanics of Moscow University, and by the Computing Center and the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The Bureau of IUTAM had allocated a considerable sum for partial financial support of young scientists attending the congress. The Thirteenth Congress was officially opened on Monday morning at the Kremlin Palace of Congresses by Academician N. 1. Muskhelishvili, President of the Congress, and Professor W. T. Koiter, President of IUTAM. Greeting addresses were offered by: Mr. K. N. Rudnev, Minister, member of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, Academician M. V. Book excerpt: The present book contains papers that have been selected from contributions to the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows which was held from the 18th to 20th April 1977 at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. Of course, there were many additional good con tributions to each subject at the meeting but the limitation imposed on the length of this volume required that a selection be made. The realization of the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was p- sible by the general support of: U. S. Army Research Office U. S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate prediction of turbulent flows remains a challenging task despite considerable work in this area and the acceptance of CFD as a design tool. The quality of the CFD calculations of the flows in engineering applications strongly depends on the proper prediction of turbulence phenomena. Investigations of flow instability, heat transfer, skin friction, secondary flows, flow separation, and reattachment effects demand a reliable modelling and simulation of the turbulence, reliable methods, accurate programming, and robust working practices. The current scientific status of simulation of turbulent flows as well as some advances in computational techniques and practical applications of turbulence research is reviewed and considered in the book.

Book excerpt: The Second European Turbulence Conference was held at the Technische Univer sitat Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany, from August 30th to September 2nd 1988 under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee. It was primar ily devoted to fundamental aspects of turbulence, and aimed at bringing together engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. The scientific committee - serving also as Sub-committee of the European Turbulence Conference - consisted of the following members: G. Comte-Bellot (Lyon), H.-H. Fernholz and H.E. Fiedler (both from Berlin) as co-chairmen of the conference, U. Frisch (Nice), J.C.R. Hunt (Cambridge), E. Krause (Aachen), M. Landahl (Stockholm), A.M. Obukhov (Moscow), and G. Ooms (Amsterdam). The conference programme comprised 6 invited lectures and 94 contributions, presented either orally or at poster sessions. There were 165 participants from 18 countries. All papers published in these conference proceedings were, with the exception of the invited ones, again refereed by the members of the scientific committee. The main research topics discussed at this meeting were stability and gener ation of turbulence, effects of rotation, stratification and buoyancy forces, novel instrumentation, manipulation and control, boundary layers with separation and reattachment, computer simulation, turbulent diffusion, image analysis and flow visualization, vorticity dynamics and turbulence, and large-scale structures. We have taken the liberty of regrouping some papers following the submitted final versions for this volume. Authors may therefore find their paper under a different heading from that in the conference programme.
