Book excerpt: Seasoned detective, Jason Carmichael, is assigned the task of determining the controversial death of a fellow deputy in the mountains east of Sonora, California. Assertions of suicide, a possible accident, or a drug-related hit plague Jason since there is no conclusive evidence to prove either. Sheriff Owen Wheeler assigns a gutsy, self-confident woman as an aide to Jason. Attractive and married, the woman demands the deceased deputy be, at least, afforded the dignity of an official burial. An act she feels will finally bring him home. Having this woman at his side was not Jason's choice, but soon finds out what his life would be without her. A tiny circle is Jason's only compelling evidence to solving the case until their paths cross with that of a rogue cop who makes an unsolicited remark while being questioned as part of another wider investigation. Will Jason condemn this rogue or thank him?

Book excerpt: Twisted Roads of Destiny is a compilation of short stories with imaginative characters trapped by circumstances that appear to be beyond their control. These stories might bring to question the role that destiny plays in your own life. Although there are no definitive answers to that question in this book, I hope you will enjoy the intrigue. The first two stories, ""Trapped in Eden" and "Wheels of Justice," are about ordinary people who become players in a world of crime. Some willingly played the game while others stood by helplessly ensnared by a powerful drug cartel, during which certain characteristics interestingly evolve as they deal with the circumstances around them. Other stories are about love and devotion and demonstrate how making decisions can sometimes change a person's destiny. Whether you believe in predestination, fate, or something else, I hope you will travel the Twisted Roads of Destiny at least one more time.

Book excerpt: It is 1991. Arezoo, an Iranian woman is living in Berkeley, California with her second husband, Robert, and working as a university professor. Recurring, terrifying dreams of eminent death lead her into therapy with a widely respected psychotherapist. As her memories unfold during therapy sessions, she flashes back to painful memories of her first marriage to Afshin, an Iranian man. Still, the dreams continue, prompting Arezoo to try hypnosis. Arezoo's life takes an unexpected turn under hypnosis and she begins to channel the dramatic life story of Sogand, a woman who lived in a village in Persia (now Iran) in the late 1800's. This seemingly inexplicable experience, and her sudden, intimate knowledge of Sogand's identity leads Arezoo back to Iran after many years in America. Through this woman's history Arezoo makes some life changing discoveries - key to both her past and her ex-husband's tortured, secret life. Fae Bidgoli, author of The Cracked Pomegranate, once again displays her intimate understanding of the power of redemption. In The Twisted Path Home, Fae shows how by releasing judgment and fear, and releasing generational, cultural, and self-abuse, we find our purpose in life and become joy. Fae's beliefs reflect her opposition to the inequality between men and women that she saw in her native Iran. She left Iran in 1978 as a young adult, hoping to find in the United States the freedoms she longed for throughout childhood and adolescence. In Iran, writing was an outlet for those longings. In the United States, she is free to follow her dreams and to write her stories.

And, the bedridden period of my life that finally made me write my first book. You'll learn about my years of living with a prejudiced family, enduring the bigotry and rioting of the Charlotte school system in the 60's and 70's, and my defiance that taought me the truth. You'll learn the family secret that almost devastated me when I discovered it. You'll learn just why I decided to write about the Civil War & Reconstruction. You'll learn how long The Bregdan Chronicles will last. My readers are part of my family, I look forward to sharing the adventure of this book with you."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was the extermination of the Jews part of the Nazi plan from the very start? Arno Mayer offers astartling and compelling answer to this question, which is much debated among historians today. In doing so, he provides one of the most thorough and convincing explanations of how the genocidecame about in Why Did the Heavens Not Darken?, which provoked widespread interest and controversywhen first published. Mayer demonstrates that, while the Nazis’ anti-Semitism was always virulent, it did not becomegenocidal until well into the Second World War, when the failure of their massive, all-or-nothingcampaign against Russia triggered the Final Solution. He details the steps leading up to thisenormity, showing how the institutional and ideological frameworks that made it possible evolved, and how both related to the debacle in the Eastern theater. In this way, the Judeocide is placedwithin the larger context of European history, showing how similar ‘holy causes’ in the past havetriggered analogous – if far less cataclysmic – infamies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobago offers an exquisite environment, but it has other major advantages. Until recently, Tobago's tourism industry was undeveloped. There were only a few resort-style hotels on the island, and none were more than three stories high. Numerous small hotels and guest houses dotted the towns, and there was a very low-key feel to the island. Tobago has now found itself on the tourist map, and hotels and holiday villa construction projects are in the works around the island. Tobago is still a very friendly and safe island. There are beautiful beaches, of course, but Tobago offers much more. It is a bird watcher's paradise. It also has the oldest national park in this hemisphere and some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean for experienced divers. Tobago offers visitors a true Caribbean getaway. It is very relaxed, with sunning and swimming its major attractions. Golf, tennis, and numerous water sports are available, including snorkeling, windsurfing, diving, sailing, and deep-sea fishing. The natural environment is perfect for hiking along nature trails in the rain forest, and people in Tobago are open and friendly. Like us and so many others, you'll find yourself wishing a part of Tobago could be yours forever. There is an unwritten law in Tobago that buildings may not be taller than a palm tree. That unofficial rule is now becoming a part of development policy, and hotels may not be more than three stories high anywhere on the island. Attention is also being given to the delicate ecosystem and fragile nature of the land. While the number of hotel rooms will soon more than double, sites are being carefully selected to avoid damaging the very thing that makes the island special: its beautiful environment and clean waters. When visiting Trinidad and Tobago, remember that Tobago, especially, is still an island of villages and small-town friendliness. We got a lift from a farmer one day and as we rode along he talked about the strong village ties in Tobago. Village elders still try to keep everyone on the straight and narrow so there are fewer social problems in Tobago than in nearby, more urban Trinidad. Tobagoins are accepting of visitors and seem to have unending patience with the interruptions in their daily lives caused by tourists. While open-minded, the islanders are not sophisticated. Trinidad and Tobago both provide extraordinary opportunities to explore nature in all its forms. There are over 400 species of birds, over 600 varieties of butterflies, monkeys, armadillos, caiman, lizards, over a hundred species of snakes, and a huge variety of fish and other marine life. All of these find homes in an astonishing variety of natural environments - saltwater and freshwater mangrove swamps, mountain and coastal rain forests, savannahs, coral reefs, deepwater caves, freshwater rivers, and city parks. There are over 2,300 varieties of flowering plants and it seems there are almost as many micro-climates to support them. Tobago is a bird watcher's heaven. You will hear bird songs all over the island, and will see a variety of birds, large and small. On any window ledge you can create a bird feeder with a little sugar or a banana. We made a birdbath for the tinier birds with a bowl of water, and it was endless joy to see hummingbirds, canaries, and parakeets dine and bathe. This is the most in-depth guide to the island, with extensive information about what to see and do, where to stay and eat, the history and culture. And with color photos throughout.

Book excerpt: It is an axiom that the greater the love shared, the greater the sorrow on parting this life. Sipping Tea is a collection of poems written over the swirling of many years, at the centre of which lies the death of the poet’s beloved wife, which occurred in 2015. It is a love story—written as an homage to Diana, and as an inquiry into Saxby’s deep and desperate grief in the wake of her passing. If we do not know the pain of it already, the fear of losing the person we’ve lovingly lived our life alongside of can prove a source of terror. In this often-tragic but always grateful collection, we meet a man in the midst of this anguish, and accompany him as he falls into the depths of despair and learns, with difficulty, to live—and love—again.
