Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twin Hells: A Thrilling Narrative of Life in the Kansas and Missouri Penitentiaries Life, or they surely would have resisted tempta tion and kept out of crime. The following pages will impart to the reader some idea of what he may expect to endure in case he be comes entangled in the meshes of the law, and is compelled to do service for the State with out any remuneration. Every penitentiary is a veritable hell. Deprive a person of his liberty, punish and maltreat him, and you fill his life with misery akin to those who wander in the darkness of eternal night. I think, when the reader has perused the following pages, he will agree with me, that the book has the proper title That this volume may prove an eye-opener to the boys who may read it, and prove interesting and instructive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twin Hells: A Thrilling Narrative of Life in the Kansas and Missouri Penitentiaries The following pages treat of hell - A Kansas hell and a Missouri hell. Those who desire to peruse works that tell about Heaven only, are urged to drop this book and run. I was an inmate of the Kansas penitentiary for sixteen months, and make mention of what came under my own observation in connection with what I experienced. While an inmate of this prison I occupied cells at various times with convicts who had served terms in the Missouri prison. From these persons I gathered much useful material for my book. After my release I visited the Missouri penitentiary, and verified the statements of those criminals, and gathered additional material from the prison records and the officials. I have written chiefly for the youth of the country, but all ages will be deeply interested in the following pages. A large majority of the convicts are young men from sixteen to twenty-five years of age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten Reformer traces criminal justice practice and reform developments in late nineteenth-century America through the life and career of Robert McClaughry, a leading reformer. As a warden of one of America's toughest prisons, as a chief of police of Chicago, as a superintendent of two different reformatories, and as one of the first wardens of the federal prison system, McClaughry developed and led a reform movement that resonates today. As a founding member of the reformatory movement that sought to "save" young first offenders, McClaughry advocated new sentencing structures, probation, parole, and rehabilitative regimes within new institutions for young first offenders called reformatories. McClaughry then successfully got these reformatory ideals placed into adult prisons. In addition, McClaughry became American's main advocate for a criminal identification method called the Bertillon system. He set up the first identification bureaus at the Illinois State Penitentiary, the Chicago police department, and the federal prison at Leavenworth, Kansas and these became models for others across the country. Finally, as a founding member of the National Association of Chiefs of Police (today the International Association of Chiefs of Police) and the National Prison Assocation (today American Corrections Association), McClaughry sought to professionalize police and prison administrators.

Book excerpt: Godslayers—Zoe Hana Mikuta's high-octane sequel to Gearbreakers—is perfect for fans of Pacific Rim, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, and Marie Lu's Legend series. The only way to kill a god is from the inside... The Gearbreakers struck a devastating blow against Godolia on Heavensday, but the cost of victory has been steep. Months later, the few rebels who've managed to escape the tyrannical empire's bloody retribution have fled to the mountains, hunted by the last Zenith—Godolia's only surviving leader. Eris has been held prisoner since the attack on the capital city, which almost killed her. And she begins to wish it had when she discovers Sona—the girl she loves, the girl she would tear down cities for—also survived, only to be captured and corrupted by the Zenith. The cybernetic brainwashing that Sona has forcibly undergone now has her believing herself a loyal soldier for Godolia, and Eris' mortal enemy. With the rebellion shattered and Godolia moving forward with an insidious plan to begin inducting Badlands children into a new Windup Pilot program, the odds have never been more stacked against the Gearbreakers. Their last hope for victory will depend on whether Eris and Sona can somehow find their way back to each other from opposite sides of a war... Praise for Gearbreakers: A Junior Library Guild Selection "An absolute joyride ... Zoe Hana Mikuta is a talent to be in awe of." —Chloe Gong, New York Times-bestselling author of These Violent Delights "Dark, fierce, thrilling, and tender, Gearbreakers will make your blood sing. ... An electric heart beats on every page of this breathlessly paced cyberpunk adventure." —Nina Varela, author of Crier's War

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have read and loved The Little Prince and if you like riddles, this book will probably interest you. What is the meaning of the “magnificent image” at the beginning of the first chapter? Most readers do not find it magnificent at all. Yet, those who know that “the essential is invisible to the eyes” see it as an invitation to think and to learn. The “hat” featured on the same page which actually is something else conveys another hint to look beyond appearance. As you read The Proof by Nine, you will see what is represented by the Virgin Forest mentioned on the first page of The Little Prince. You will grasp the meanings of the pilot, the little prince, the golden muffler of the title character and of the wonderful “fox.” You will see what the “children” really are. The war waged by “sheep” against the “rose” will make profound sense. You will recognize the universal symbols of the tree, the rope, the wheel and the well of science. You will be edified by the experience of the Turkish astronomer. You will observe how all that is relevant to current events and politics for, as stated by the author of The Proof by Nine, “all those things are connected.” You might even ask yourself an exciting question: “Did Saint-Exupéry see the future?” That is why The Little Prince is, in the final words of its author “so very important.”

Book excerpt: "From the Bible through Dante and up to Treblinka and Guantánamo Bay, here is a rich source for nightmares." --The New York Times Book Review Three thousand years of visions of Hell, from the ancient Near East to modern America From the Hebrew Bible's shadowy realm of Sheol to twenty-first-century visions of Hell on earth, The Penguin Book of Hell takes us through three thousand years of eternal damnation. Along the way, you'll take a ferry ride with Aeneas to Hades, across the river Acheron; meet the Devil as imagined by a twelfth-century Irish monk--a monster with a thousand giant hands; wander the nine circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno, in which gluttons, liars, heretics, murderers, and hypocrites are made to endure crime-appropriate torture; and witness the debates that raged in Victorian England when new scientific advances cast doubt on the idea of an eternal hereafter. Drawing upon religious poetry, epics, theological treatises, stories of miracles, and accounts of saints' lives, this fascinating volume of hellscapes illuminates how Hell has long haunted us, in both life and death.
