Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turkish Empire Its Growth and Decay The favour with which, two years ago, my book on The Partitions of Poland was received by the public has induced me to devote the interval to a study of the history of another State which, in modern times, has almost disappeared from the map of Europe - namely Turkey. The subject is one in which I have for many years past taken great interest. In the course of a long life!, I have witnessed the greater part of the events which have resulted in the loss to that State of all its Christian provinces in Europe and all its Moslem provinces in Africa, leaving to it only its capital and a small part of Thrace in Europe, and its still wide possessions in Asia. So long ago, also, as in 1855 and 1857, I spent some time at Constantinople and travelled in Bulgaria and Greece, and was able to appreciate the effects of Turkish rule. As a result, I gave a full support, in 1876, to Mr. Gladstone in his efforts to secure the independence of Bulgaria and in 1879 was an active member of a committee, presided over by Lord Rosebery, which had for its object the extension of the kingdom of Greece so as to include the provinces inhabited by Greeks still suffering under Turkish rule. In 1887 and 1890 I again visited the East and travelled over the same ground as thirty years earlier, and was able to observe the immense improvements which had been effected in the provinces that had gained independence, and how little change had taken place at Constantinople. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turkish Empire: Its Historical, Statistical, and Religious Condition; Also Its Manners, Customs, Etc The affairs of the East, especially if the result of the present struggle should be adverse to Turkey, may have such an important bearing, that any account, however brief, of the history, political and religious condition, manners and customs, and physical resources of a people who, but a few centuries since, shook the world with the terror of their arms, must be interesting; and the more so from the fact that the Turkish empire seems to be in the last stage of existence, and to be rapidly approaching dissolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turkish Empire: The Sultans, the Territory, and the People The Ottoman or Osmanli 'i\1rks are identical as a people with numerous and extensive tribes scattered over the plains and table-lands of Central and Western Asia, pastoral in their occupations, warlike in disposi tion, predacious in habits, and nomadic in their mode of life. These tribes have particular local designations, as Turkomans, Iliyats, Kirghises, Usbecks, and Nogays, besides others derived from the names of the districts they occupy, or from those of celebrated Chieftains. They are also popularly distinguished by the compre hensive appellation of Tatars, and their ancestors appear to have been known to the ancients by the general denomination of Scythians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Turkish Empire in Europe Kingdoms and the Porte were but the prelude, but a vanguard action, to clear the Turk out of Europe, and so make room for the titanic conflict impending between the Slav and Teuton peoples When they meet, what then Consider the enormous highly organized strength available among the possible combatants - Germany's millions, Austria's vast resources Are those who live on the flanks of the impending movement prepared to hold their own Outside the ring surrounding Slavs and Teutons, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, France, Italy are the confines of a vast Empire. When last the Teuton nations moved so many centuries ago a world-wide Empire fell in ruins, an Empire glutted with wealth yet teeming with a pauper population in its capital, luxurious, unnerved, disdaining any service to their country, unconscious of any obligations in return for the privileges of citizenship. So Rome fell before the Teuton. Again the Teuton is stirring. Germany is daily perfecting an already formidable navy, for flank defence first, then for further enterprise Austria has recently greatly added to the budget for naval and military purposes, and the road to Saloniki is no longer closed by Turkey; Italy with her considerable naval power is allied to Germany and Austria.
