Book Synopsis British Trade Unions, the Labour Party, and Israel’s Histadrut by : Ronnie Fraser
Download or read book British Trade Unions, the Labour Party, and Israel’s Histadrut written by Ronnie Fraser and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the British Labour Party and the trade unions and how their relationship with the Jews of Palestine and Israel has evolved over the past one hundred years. It also reflects the changing attitudes of the Labour Party and the unions towards the persecution of the Jews, a Jewish homeland in Palestine, Israel and antisemitism. An in-depth examination of critical events in European and Middle East history reveals the links between British unions and their Israeli union counterpart, the Histadrut (General Federation of Labour), and sets out the circumstances in which the unions went from backing the Labour Party’s 1917 war aims declaration, which called for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, through to the present day, which sees the unions promoting campaigns for boycotts and sanctions against the State of Israel.

Book Synopsis UNITE History Volume 3 (1945-1960) by : Marjorie Mayo
Download or read book UNITE History Volume 3 (1945-1960) written by Marjorie Mayo and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume on the history of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), covering the period 1945 to 1960, and starting with an extraordinary moment in its history. There were such high hopes with the election of Attlee’s Labour government, committed to a series of radical reforms, establishing the Welfare State and nationalising key sectors of the economy. These reforms seemed to offer unique opportunities to move forwards towards what Nye Bevan, the main architect of the NHS, saw as a ‘new world both at home and abroad’. Or did it? This volume explores the challenges as well as the opportunities for radical reform, as these played out between 1945 and 1960. There was renewed industrial unrest, with disputes in the docks and transport industries, despite the best efforts of the Labour Government to contain them. Much remained to be achieved in terms of equalities, and there were challenges when it came to calls for international solidarity in the Cold War context. But still, there had been major developments in terms of trade union education. The T&G had become a much more democratic organisation, and, overall, was a more powerful, progressive force by the end of this period. This volume explores issues with continuing relevance for the trade union and labour movement.

This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of U.S. postwar policy toward the reconstruction of Europe's trade unions, Romero demonstrates the weaknesses of the American strategy to reshape European societies in the likeness of American social pluralism. Using Italy as a case study, he shows how the U.S. government cooperated with the American Federation of Labor to support friendly anti-Communist unions. Originally published in 1993.
