Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tshi-Speaking Peoples of the Gold Coast of West Africa: Their Religion, Manners, Customs, Laws, Language, Etc The Gold Coast consists of that portion of the West African coast comprised between the Assini River on the west and the Volta River on the east, and extends from about 3° 30' west longitude to 30' east longitude. The Gold Coast colony extends from the Assini River to the town of Flohow, some sixty miles to the east of the Volta River; but the territory beyond the latter is really a portion of the Slave Coast. Tho greater portion of the Gold Coast consists of dense forest, which covers innumerable small hills, averaging from 100 to 300 feet in height. Inland, these hills take the shape of low ranges running more or less parallel with the general line of the coast, and which culminate in the well-known Adansi Hills. All this forest tract, locally termed "the bush," may, for all practicable purposes, be considered impenetrable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tshi-Speaking Peoples of the Gold Coast of West Africa: Their Religion, Manners, Customs, Laws, Language, Etc Professor Waitz holds very similar views. He says The comparatively low degree of civilisation among the Negroes may be chiefly explained by the relaxing effects of the climate, the geographical position of those regions, the few requirements as regards dress, food, and habitation, all of which Nature yields in abundance, and are obtainable by the simplest efforts. A high degree of intellectual development, deep thought, and a refined morality seem scarcely compatible with the mental prostration which life in the torrid zone produces in the European as well as in the native. Human art will hardly ever overcome the power of these natural And these opinions are supported by the rapid retrogression into barbarism of those inhabi tants of the Liberian Republic, who are the descendants of freed American negroes; and by the fact that the expenditure of large sums of money by various philan thropic societies, and the exertions of missionaries and. Teachers of all denominations, have failed to do more than impose a mere veneer of civilisation upon the inhabitants of Sierra Leone, and then only upon a small minority, and this after a century of labour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yoruba people are descendants from a variety of West African communities. They are united by Geography, History, Religion and most importantly Language ... They all speak Yoruba. In present day West Africa, the main countries where Yoruba speaking people live are Nigeria, Togo and Benin. These countries are very close together. Many years ago, before African slavery, the Yoruba people inhabited an area which stretched, along the coast of West Africa, all the way inward and down to Angola in South West Africa. During the period of African Slavery, from the late 1500's to the late 1800's, millions of Yoruba people were forcibly taken out of Africa. Their numbers dwindled and so did their land area. After Slavery, the European powers (i.e.) the British; French; Dutch; Spanish and Portuguese, cut up the continent of Africa into different pieces and imposed new countries and languages in Africa. The Yoruba people suffered greatly, they were divided. Their people were scattered all over the Americas. They now spoke many different languages ... Spanish, English, Dutch, French, and Portuguese.
