I come not as Huss did, or Luther or Calvin, with fire in my eye and Satan in my heart. I come as the Summer breeze cometh, to soothe, strengthen and delight. I come in the interests of peace, to pro mote peace. I come to teach liberty of conscience and liberty of sentiment, the unrestricted right of all men and women to believe in those doctrines which the God of heaven, as well as the God of earth, impels them to believe. I come to teach the common brother hood of the race, not in theory only, but in practice, not for any one sect, butfor all mankind. I come to teach love, the love for all nature, as well as for Nature's God. I come to praise God, not because I fear him, but because I love him; not because I dread his mightiness, but because I adore his goodness. After all the systems and disputes of ethical philosophy, the great Teacher has comprised the essence of morality in one sentence, Thou shalt love thy neigh bor as thyself. In like manner, natural religion is summed up in, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart. On these two commandments hang, not only the law and the prophets, but the religion, as far as reason can discover, of all intelligent natures, of angels as well as of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Truth of the Bible It has been the object of the author to use such language as would be readily understood by the most common class of minds. Sense is never sacrificed to smoothness of sound, and when a few words of rough saxon have served best to express his meaning, he has not labored to dilute them with smooth rhetorical phrases. He does not pretend to say that the arrangement of the Lectures have, in all cases, been the best, but as each Lecture is complete in itself, this is a matter of trifling importance. The preface for little readers indicates the spirit in which the study of the Word of God should always be pursued, by a mother and her children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harmony of Divine Truth How it can be accounted for, that the term truth should have been selected by the inspired writers, (or rather by the Spirit of inspiration.) to distinguish the religion which they exhibit, from every other system in the world, if at the same time they had considered it as a mere moral chaos, made for our plastic hands to mould and shape into such creeds as should please every man's own fancy? It is worthy to be noted that the sacred volume makes a very copious* use of this term, applying it to every department Of religion. For itself, as an inspired book, it claims the honor of being called the scripture of truth, and the word of truth. Dan. X. 21. Eph. I. 13. Is not the Bible thus manifestly distinguished from the Koran of the Mahometan's, and the Shasters of the Brahmins, and from every other book which sets up a claim to inspiration? The God of the Bible is called the true God, his beloved Son is called the true Witness, and his Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth and why, except to distinguish Jehovah from idols, his Son from false Christs, and the Holy Ghost from Satan, and every other lying spirit? The doctrines we are required to believe, are denominated the truth, to distinguish them from the doctrines of devils, and from delusive errors of every kind; and the belief of these doctrines, when it is wrought in our hearts by the Spirit of God, is said to be truth and no lie, to distinguish it from a false faith which does not work by love. Also, that conduct which is required by the divine law, and which is the external expression of a heart conformed to it, is called obeying the truth. 1 Tim. Ii. 4. 1 John ii. 27. 2 John 4. The church of the living God, when considered as a community, composed Of men redeemed from iniquity, is called the pillar and ground Of the truth. 1 Tim. Iii. 15. See also Isa. Xxvi. 2. What an importance does it give to religious truth when we hear Christ Jesus witnessing this good confession before Pontius Pilate! TO this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37. Surely that must be a thing of no small consequence, the establishment of which was the end of our Redeemer's birth, and the sole cause why he came into the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible, Science, and Faith Those who still view the Bible as a divinely inspired book, despite the repeated attacks made on its authenticity and inspiration, as well as those who yet hold to the teachings of their faith, notwithstanding the theories of a certain school of scientists, who relegate religion and belief in a personal God to the limbo of idle fancies, are frequently accused of forswearing their liberty of thought, and of voluntarily placing themselves in a condition of intellectual thraldom which incapacitates them from appreciating the true significance of the most important inductions and generalizations of modern science. Groundless as this charge is, there are not a few, even among intelligent people, who believe it to be substantially true. And yet nothing could be more false or absurd. As well say that the mariner forfeits his freedom of action because, forsooth, he gives heed to the buoys and lighthouses which are stationed along his course, and which signalize reefs and shoals and indicate places where the safety of his vessel would be imperilled or where navigation is impossible. What buoys and lighthouses are to the seafaring man, that expressions of revealed truth and principles of Christian philosophy are to the man of science. If man would see himself both as a physical and spiritual being, let him look into this Mirror. If man would understand God's Word, he must first know himself in his dual nature-both as a physi cal and a spiritual being. To understand the Bible is to know man-man whom God created in His own image - the spiritual man, and the physical man conceived in lust and born of woman. The Bible is a revelation from God as to the true character of this dual natured creature we call man. In Truth there is but one man - and he is Spiritual and made in God's Image; but he tasted the death of the Flesh - and became dual in nature. Every thing else appears diminutive while the mind is occupied with this thought. Though the idea of an eternal and ind finite being is too great for the grasp of the human intellect, yet it is suited to the human mind. It fills it, and produces a feeling of reverence, which is felt to be a right emotion. If there is no such being, this is the grandest illusion which ever possessed the imagination of man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the Old Testament So long as Christianity remains a vital religion, the Old Testament will be a book of living interest and importance. The Scriptures of the Hebrew people permeate too deeply the distinctively Christian writ ings, and have affected too seriously the fortunes of Christianity and the standards of Christian conduct, for the adherents of the religion of Jesus ever to put them aside as none of their concern. The following pages are an endeavor to set forth some of the more important consequences, both for good and evil, of the inclusion of Hebrew writings in the Christian Bible, and to illustrate a few of the practical consequences of the newer views concerning the Old Testament. NO opinion could be more mistaken than that which regards the criticism of the older books of the Bible as an affair of antiquarians and pedants, without influence upon practical life.
