Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth-Seeker and Present Age, 1849: A Catholic Review of Literature, Philosophy, and Religion As an introduction to a better classified system of history, in connection with Societary Science and Art, we present a brief synopsis of the principal phases of history, thro an outline of the chief states of society which have been deve loped more or less in the world. In analyzing society in relation to its progress, we find these societary states to be ten in number. As the classifications of science demand a certain unitary and definite nomenclature, and an algebraic abbreviation of expression, we name these ten societary states - Paradization. Book excerpt: For those, like myself, who have enjoyed and greatly benefitted from reading the essays of Joseph Pearce, published in a variety of venues, especially as editorials in the Saint Austin Review, but who have not practically been able to save them in an effective way for future consultation and reflection, the present volume is indeed a great gift. For those who are not familiar with the essays of Joseph Pearce, the volume represents a treasure of the most solid Catholic thought on important aspects of culture, both historical and contemporary, especially as it expresses itself through literature. Joseph Pearce has a remarkable gift of writing about history, literature, and culture in general. His writing is objective and accessible, that is, it shows his steadfast attention to the truth and to language which manifests the same truth in its inherent beauty or natural attractiveness. The fifth essay in this collection, "History Revisited," for instance, is a sterling example of his gift for such writing. The essays of Joseph Pearce reveal his profound understanding of reason and faith, of classical realist philosophy and Catholic doctrine, which permits him to write about history, literature, and culture in general with an unfailing attention to the objective reality of God and of His earthly creation, that is, of man and of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay Catholicism, Liberalism, and Socialism: Considered in Their Fundamental Principles The decline of faith that produces the decline of truth does not necessarily cripple, but certainly misleads the human mind. God, who is both compassionate and just, denies truth to guilty souls, but does not deprive them of life. He condemns them to error, but not to death. As an evidence of this, every one has witnessed those periods of prodigious incredulity and Of highest culture that have shone in history with a phosphores cent light, leaving more of a burning than a luminous track behind them. If we carefully contemplate these ages, we Shall see that their Splendor is only the inflamed glare of the Iightning's flash. It is evident that their brightness is the sudden explosion of their obscure but combustible materials, rather than the calm light pro ceeding from purest regions, and serenely Spread over heaven's vault by the divine pencil of the sovereign painter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholicism, the True Rationalism, or Four Links in a Chain of Reasoning The Rationalist has another alluring title for his system. He boasts that he is a "Freethinker," and once again he would enshrine a persuasive argument in a word. For is not freedom man's most prized possession, and is not slavery the antithesis of freedom, and who in this century of emancipations can remain content to be a slave? Surely, then, Rationalism and Free-thought is the only possible intellectual attitude of a reasoning and reasonable man in these days of Liberty and Liberalism. There is a political argument in the mere word Liberalism, and for many there is a theological prejudice begotten by the very titles Rationalism and Free-thought. But what's in a name? Just as there may be political Liberals whose policy would hamper true liberty - for example, the liberty of a Catholic parent to give a Catholic education to his child - so, perhaps, Rationalism is not as reasonable as it sounds, and Free-thought may be bound fast, enslaved in a bigotry beyond any that the medieval Catholic has been accused of fostering. "Free-thought" - let us reason about the word a little and expose the veiled fallacy of the phrase. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth and Counter Truth The rule now laid down with regard to Omnipotence and free will, holds in the case of nearly all the mysteries of revealed religion; for it is characteristic of them all that it is to a biune or complex, and not to a simple ar ticle of belief our assent is asked. The Unity of the God head, for example, is, as a truth, absolute and unqualified at the same time, we must remember that the manner in which the One Godhead exists is not such as to forbid a plurality of persons in it and vice versa, the notion of plurality is not such as to militate against the Unity of the Divine substance. We are neither to confound the persons, nor to divide the substance. We are taught to believe, in like manner, that in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, the perfect Godhead exists; yet the manner of its existence is not such as to swallow up, notwith standing its glory, the proper humanity; there is a per feet Humanity, yet it is not such as to exclude, notwith standing it weakness, the perfect Godhead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apologia Pro Vita Sua: Being a History of His Religious Opinions I left their removal to a future day, when personal feelings would have died out, and documents would see the light, which were as yet buried in closets or scattered through the county. This way my state of mind, as it had been for many years, when, in the beginning of 1864, I unexpectedly found myself publicly put upon my defence, and furnished with an opportunity of pleading my cause before the world, and, as it so happened, with a fair prospect of an impartial hearing. Taken indeed by surprise, as I was, I had much reason to be anxious how I should be able to acquit myself in so serious a matter; however, I had long a tacit understanding with myself, that, in the improbable event of a challenge being formally made to me, by a person of name, it would be my duty to meet it. That opportunity had now occurred; it never might occur again; not to avail myself of it at once would be virtually to give up my cause; accordingly, I took advantage of it, and, as it has turned out, the circumstance that no time was allowed me for any studied statements has compensated, in the equitable judgement of the public, for such imperfections in composition as my want of leisure involved. It was in number for January 1864, of a magazine of wide circulation, and in an Article upon Queen Elizabeth, that a popular writer took occasion formally to accuse me by name of thinking so lightly of the virtue of Veracity, as in set terms to have countenanced and defended that neglect of it which he at the same time imputed to the Catholic Priesthood. His words were these: - "Truth, for its own sake, had never been a virtue with the Roman clergy. Father Newman informs us that it need not, and on the whole ought not to be; that cunning is the weapon which heaven has given to the Saints wherewith to withstand the brute male force of the wicked world which marries and is given in marriage. Whether his notion be doctrinally correct or not, it is at least historically so." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
