Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are Mormons Christians? What do they believe? How do their beliefs compare with other Christian religions? I have been impressed by the dedication of Mormon missionaries, the beauty of the Mormon Tablernacle Choir and the majestic architecture of Mormon temples. I have known several Mormons and they seem to be family oriented people who live out their faith in tangilble ways. As American culture drifts towards situation ethics and values based on surveys, Mormons are like other Christians in that they tend to be conservative and look to their Church and Scriptures for guidance. This interest and curiosity led me to study Mormon scriptures and compare them with the Bible. Each chapter of Truth Seeker: Mormon Scriptures & The Bible is a summary of each of the books that make up The Book Of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price and Doctrines & Covenants. This is followed by a discussion of internal inconsistencies, differences from the Bible and historical problems. In order to provide a balanced discussion, the views of a devout Mormon, Dr. Jordan Jensen, are included. Brigham Young University and Latter-day Saint (LDS) web sites were used to answer questions I still had after completing my review and to fill in gaps in my understanding of some doctrines and beliefs. The result of these efforts is a book that provides insights into Mormonism and how it compares and deviates from other Christian churches. The essence of the deviations are founded in the idea that Mormonism extends, clarifies and sometimes replaces Biblical teachings based on revelations given to Joseph Smith and subsequent LDS prophets.

Merrill became the first native Utahn to earn a PhD. Working at the University of Utah, he labored to reconcile the secular world with the spiritual world of his youth. In 1912 he helped establish the first Latter-day Saint seminary at Granite High School. As Church commissioner of education, he helped establish the institutes of religion, with a mission to allow college students to reconcile the secular truths learned in university settings with the truths of the gospel. He created the Religion Department at Brigham Young University and encouraged young scholars to produce professional studies of the Latter-day Saint religion. In 1933 Merrill was called as an Apostle, where he continued his work to modernize the Church. In the final years of his life, Merrill continued to work to show that science and religion could be reconciled.

He followed his father and grandfather into church leadership positions and eventually moved up the hierarchy to become one of Europe's most senior leaders within the Mormon Church. But when church members began approaching him with credibly sourced information from the Internet that contradicted the church's official history and teachings, he dismissed it as "anti-Mormon lies" and asked his superiors for help responding. The unwillingness of the top Mormon leaders in Salt Lake City to address the issues led Mattsson on his own search for truth."--Page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there have been a number of popular books that have questioned who Jesus was. Was he a Zealot, Messiah, misunderstood prophet or someone who was mythologized by the Roman Church to gain power and influence? This book explores these and many other objections to traditional Christian views as a dialogue between a father and son who hold polar opposite beliefs about Jesus, his message and his mission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Warren Mueller has read the Bible daily since 1979. He has served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Gideons International. With Truth Seeker: Bible Topics, he hopes to provide clarity regarding what the Bible says about many popular subjects in a succinct and objective format. Truth Seeker: Bible Topics offers a concise summary of what the Bible says about over thirty practical living and theological topics and includes many Bible quotes to provide additional information on each topic. There are questions at the end of each chapter that can help to facilitate Sunday school class or small group discussions. This helpful guide covers a wide variety of topics, including angels, abortion, eating and drinking, gambling, heaven, money, spiritual gifts, swearing, and worry. Much of the controversy that surrounds the interpretations of what the Bible says stem from a lack of systematic study, the use of verses out of context, or attempts to extrapolate truth beyond what is clearly stated. In order to avoid these pitfalls and determine a fair interpretation, Warren Mueller attempts to explain some of the truths of the Bible that are relevant to our human nature, thoughts, and purposes today.

Winner of an Award of Excellence in the 2003 Chicago Book Clinic! What is real? What is truth? What can we know? What should we believe? What should we do and why? Is there a God? Can we know him? Do Christian doctrines make sense? Can we believe in God in the face of evil? These are fundamental questions that any thinking person wants answers to. These are questions that philosophy addresses. And the answers we give to these kinds of questions serve as the the foundation stones for consrtucting any kind of worldview. In Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview J.P. Moreland and William Lane Craig offer a comprehensive introduction to philosophy from a Christian perspective. In their broad sweep they seek to introduce readers to the principal subdisciplines of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, ethics and philosophy of religion. They do so with characteristic clarity and incisiveness. Arguments are clearly outlined, and rival theories are presented with fairness and accuracy. Philosophy, they contend, aids Christians in the tasks of apologetics, polemics and systematic theology. It reflects our having been made in the image of God, helps us to extend biblical teaching into areas not expressly addressed in Scripture, facilitates the spiritual discipline of study, enhances the boldness and self-image of the Christian community, and is requisite to the essential task of integrating faith and learning. Here is a lively and thorough introduction to philosophy for all who want to know reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains fifteen essays, each first presented as the annual Tanner Lecture at the conference of the Mormon History Association by a leading scholar. Renowned in their own specialties but relatively new to the study of Mormon history at the time of their lectures, these scholars approach Mormon history from a wide variety of perspectives, including such concerns as gender, identity creation, and globalization. Several of these essays place Mormon history within the currents of American religious history--for example, by placing Joseph Smith and other Latter-day Saints in conversation with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nat Turner, fellow millenarians, and freethinkers. Other essays explore the creation of Mormon identities, demonstrating how Mormons created a unique sense of themselves as a distinct people. Historians of the American West examine Mormon connections with American imperialism, the Civil War, and the wider cultural landscape. Finally the essayists look at continuing Latter-day Saint growth around the world, within the context of the study of global religions. Examining Mormon history from an outsider's perspective, the essays presented in this volume ask intriguing questions, share fresh insights and perspectives, analyze familiar sources in unexpected ways, and situate research on the Mormon past within broader scholarly debates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people see Mormons as just another branch of the Christian church, and to be admired, perhaps, for their family life, morality and upright culture. But the theology and spirituality of this cult are very far from an orthodox biblical understanding of true saving faith. And yet Christians are often fearful of engaging in conversations about the gospel with Mormons, knowing that there are suspicions and complex issues that lie beneath the surface. This short book is designed to help both Christians and whole churches to understand more about the beliefs, mindset and motivations of those who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons), and to reach out to them with the good news of the gospel. Written at a level that everyone can understand, this book emphasizes the importance of forming loving, honest and open relationships as part of the way we engage with our Mormon friends and neighbors, and with those who may come knocking at our doors.
