He believes that everything must approve itself to his reason. Science has made such gigantic strides, and has by its magnificent generalizations so brought home to the modern mind the unity of nature, that its laws are regarded as the abiding objective truth, whatever be our likes or dislikes, our superstitions or prejudices. Other things may change, the laws of nature are permanent. For if our hypotheses have to be abandoned from time to time, it is not the underlying law which is supposed to be capricious, and we do not desist from the search until some more permanent hypothesis is discovered. So to-day the old atomic theory is yielding to a grander generalization as to the structure of matter. 2. Equally zealous is the philosophic student to discover the laws of mind. Persuaded that human life can be unified and explained in terms of reason, he traces through the systems that change from age to age, a pervading and ever clearer principle. Deeper and truer inductions in the realm of pure thought, psychology, or the process of history displace the philosophic structures of the past, which are proving too strait for the amplitude of present knowledge and experience. 3. Truth is a term that is too often narrowed in its range. Truths of science are only a part of the whole of truth; truths of philosophy are only a part of the whole of truth. Both science and philosophy must include in their survey the truths of the other realms of nature before giving forth their final results as the truth. For no part of truth can conflict with any other part of truth. So no hypothesis of science or philosophy is truth if it clashes with the largest meaning of man's life. 4. According to the Bible man is of such supreme value, his essential worth is so great, and his destiny so glorious, that the world of nature is merely the stage on which man's character is disciplined (Ps. 8:3-9; Matt. 6:32, 33; 16:26; 24:35; John 1:1-4, 10; 17:5, 24; Eph. 1:4; Heb. 4:3). Nature is regarded as sympathetic to the crises in the Kingdom of God (Ps. 104:1-10; Matt. 24:29-31; Rom. 8:19-22). Therefore since the purposes of God for the kingdom of humanity are supreme, no scientific or philosophic theory can be correct which conflicts with the principles of God's moral rule. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Gospel: With a Critical Reconstruction of the d104 The subject of the present volume has gradually become prominent in recent years through the labour of New Testament critics. The Apostolic Gospel is a primitive document which now exists only as one among other elements contained in the four canonical gospels, and especially in the first and the third. Systematic attempts have been made to restore this document to its original form by the method of comparative criticism. My work differs in several respects from the attempts which have hitherto been made. It is more conservative, inasmuch as it preserves and admits into the text a number of narratives and sayings which have been rejected by critics even like Weiss and Wendt, who are not negative in their tendency. It is also a departure from current opinion, inasmuch as it involves a new estimate of the gospels and a new conception of Christs teaching and ministry. My argument is based entirely on textual evidence. In accordance with such evidence I have rearranged the sayings which are scattered through the gospels or gathered together into secondary formations; and the result is a series of discourses, each of which is authenticated by a clear connection of thought and by adaptation to the historical situation. Not only so, but in this volume itself, which is but part of the proposed plan, I have recognized the fact that even within the narrower limits of the Gospels which give us our record of the Gospel, there are not only possible but actual diverse impressions of what the Gospel is; and that not only is full justice due to each such impression, taken by itself and for its own sake, but that the very fullest justice to each is the only way of arriving at the truth of all, or at the truth of the whole of which they are the complementary and neces sary parts. The one great lesson that must forerun and make ready the Christian unity of the future is this: that contraries do not necessarily contradict, nor need opposites always oppose. What we want is not to surrender or abolish our differences, but to unite and compose them. We need the truth of every va riant opinion and the light from every opposite point of view. The least fragment is right in so far as it stands for a part of the truth. It is wrong only when, as so Often, it elevates into a ground of division from the other fragments just that which in reality fits it to unite with and supplement them. What has been said may indicate at least the spirit and temper in which the study before us is sought to be conducted. I speak here, of course, only in general ities; the concrete application or use of the principles enunciated must be found and judged in the book itself. As a matter of form rather than of substance, I feel that there will be a question as to the success with which the promise of method or procedure has been carried out in the volume before us. The matter is treated in the following order: (1) the Gospel of the Common Humanity, (2) the Gospel of the Work, and (3) the Gospel of the Person of our Lord. And each of these is to be considered, as far as possible, by itself and independently of the others. There are those who hold the first of these and not the other two, or the first two and not the third - at least in the full sense in which we think Christianity includes them all. And we were under obligation to do full justice to the point of view of all. If I have succeeded but imperfectly in doing this, if I have at times, contrary to promise, run the lower position up into the higher, or anticipated the higher in the lower, it is at least a question where the responsibility lies. It may be that what I myself believe to be, not three gospels, but three aspects or stages of one and the same Gospel, may indeed be so. And it may be that they themselves do, of themselves and in spite Of us, so run up together into one, that it is impossible for us, however honest we may be in the effort to do justice to each by itself, to keep them apart; so predetermined are they, and determined, to find each its own meaning and fulfilment, not in the sep arate truth of each, but in the united and common truth of all.
