Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About Christian Science Of all the delusions, in the matter of religion, which have at any time gained credence among apparently intelligent people, the most surprising, perhaps, is that known in recent times as Christian Science." It is quite obvious that, as has been well remarked, it is neither Christian nor Science. For a doctrine professing to be Christian should (as is evident) be one founded on the words of Christ as a whole, which the person holding such a doctrine endeavors to explain in their genuine sense; rather than on theories which he himself has elaborated, and supports, here and there, by such words of Christ as he can manage to fit to suit his purpose. Also, a system professing to be scientific should rest on a solid basis of fact, and be stated clearly and distinctly, not in vague generalities, which are either truisms or have no precise meaning whatever. A scientific system should be in some way a contribution to our knowledge. But the most favorable criticism on the lucubration known as "Christian Science" would be that it contains "some things which are new, and some things which are true; but the things which are true are not new, and the things which are new are not true." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth and Error of Christian Science I have made little allusion to the various, more or less mutually opposed, schools of Healing by Thought, and have not even mentioned M r Dowie, who has had a follow ing rivalling in numbers that of Mrs Eddy, and who is alleged to have produced quite as striking cures without physical means. But he has attached his healing to no new theory of Metaphysic, or of Christian doctrine, and therefore does not propagate a belief in his cures which is subversive of ordinary doctrine or of common sense. Consequently there is nothing new in his teaching to criticise; and as regards his healing, if there is any truth in the theory given as accounting for the cures of Christian Science, namely, the calling out, by some means, of a latent vitality re siding in the sub-consciousness of the patient, it will equally account for those of Mr Dowie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth in Christian Science: A Lecture Before the College Club, at Boston, Massachusetts That Christian Science has received at the hands of its jcontemporary opponents seems very inadequate and often grossly unfair. Its critics have hardly taken it seriously; and, in such an attitude of mind, abuse and misapprehension have usurped the place of calm analysis and candid dissection. We are aware that the statements are vigorous, but it must be remembered that they are written in defence of righteousness and truth. The authoress of "Science and Health" certainly cannot affect surprise that when she writes "Christian Science is demonstrably the Logos," and that "outside Christian Science all is error," the position she assumes necessarily invites serious attention. We have therefore subjected a number of Mrs. Eddy's propositions to careful examination, and are content to leave the results of our work to the ordinary intelligence of our readers. It is a singular fact that a lady whose personal amiability is so pronounced should have committed herself to such a large number of illogical and grotesque propositions as those contained in this volume of 700 pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science and the Ordinary Man: A Discussion of Some of the Teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science I should add to this foreword the statement that while this book has in its title the words Christian Science, the author is one; who believes that all mankind are on the way to final and conscious unity with God. Many theories of truth held by men have elements of real truth in them, which elements of real truth, as the leaven which leavens the whole lump, will, the author believes, eventually lead their followers through experience out of those portions of their belief which are untrue and into the one way of truth which is that trod by Christ Jesus. This book, in addition to being a discussion of Christian Science, is in part an attempt to set forth the essential true elements existing in some other beliefs, to'the end that a starting point may be found for greater brotherhood among all churches and beliefs, a basis in Christ for the Brotherhood of Man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Science Movement: Reprinted From the New York Sun, Revised and Enlarged Never in the history of Christian Science has the move ment been so much talked about as it is to-day. Those who understand it least discuss it most, for the Christian Sci entists themselves are workers, not talkers. The movement has become marked not only in its home, America, but all over the world. When asked to give a review of the work and character of the Founder, the Reverend Mary Baker Eddy, and to tell something of the scientific and medical basis of the movement, and of its religious work, a representative Christian Scientist wrote the following statement. An inquiring public I do not do as some, cry aloud, let us alone, fearing the light of criticism; but I urge and ask for the most searching criticism, that its abrasive ness may aid me in not only emphasizing the Fables, but in bringing to a keener edge whatever there is of working quality or cash value - as James would say - in Christian Science. If my perspective of this subject is wrong, and I am blinded by beams in my own eyes, and see beams in Mrs. Eddy's teachings where I should not even find the mote, I believe I am sincere when I say that I will be truly grateful to the combined intelligences that will remove the beam and give to me a clear vision.
