Ethan Smith wrote on this topic, and in so doing, challenged the dismissal of the Indigenous Americans by European settlers. Smith used biblical scripture, similarities in the Hebrew and Native American languages and their name for God, and other points of evidence to prove the connection between Israel and the First Nations. From there he showed how the reunited Hebrew tribes would be restored to Zion before the end of the world. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Smith's book is that it is said to have influenced the Book of Mormon, which was published about seven years after later. As a child, Smith moved away from religion after his parents died but found his way back before he turned 20 and worked in the ministry until his death. Smith wrote several books while serving in the ministry in which he explored prophecies and baptism, among other subjects. But this book remains one of the most controversial of all his publications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the creation of the Book of Mormon has been told many times, and often ridiculed. A Documentary History of the Book of Mormon presents and examines the primary sources surrounding the origin of the foundational text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the most successful new religion of modern times. The scores of documents transcribed and annotated in this book include family histories, journal entries, letters, affidavits, reminiscences, interviews, newspaper articles, and book extracts, as well as revelations dictated in the name of God. From these texts emerges the captivating story of what happened (and what was believed or rumored to have happened) between September 1823-when the seventeen-year-old farm boy Joseph Smith announced that an angel of God had directed him to an ancient book inscribed on gold plates-and March 1830, when the Book of Mormon was first published. By compiling for the first time a substantial collection of both first- and secondhand accounts relevant to the inception of the divine revelation-or clever fraud-that launched a new world religion, A Documentary History makes a significant contribution to the rapidly growing field of Mormon Studies.

Book excerpt: When Joseph Smith presented the Book of Mormon for sale in early 1830, questions surfaced immediately regarding its claim to be an ancient history of America. In this ten-essay compilation, scholars outline the broad contours of contemporary research bearing on this question. Drawing from a variety of disciplines, contributors discuss historicity from the standpoint of physical and cultural anthropology, geography, linguistics, demographics, literary forms, liturgical context, theology, and evolution of the original manuscript to published work. The message of the Book of Mormon is one of socio-economic equality and divine intervention. That message can be obscured by people who revere it as an icon and prooftext rather than read it for understanding. Furthermore, attempts to make the book safe for Sunday school audiences can gloss over context. Returning to a nineteenth-century understanding restores the book's spiritual rather than symbolic importance. By asking hard questions, contributors modify, even transform, previous theories regarding the nature of LDS scripture. Still, through painstaking research, they share a wealth of fresh perspectives and offer an array of new directions for future investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Origin of the Book of Mormon From the year 1834 to the present, the majority of anti-Mormon polemics and writers have held to the view presented in these pages that the Book of Mormon is nothing more than Solomon Spaulding's "Manuscript Found," revamped. Now and then one has been found who has doubted or denied this theory, but, generally speaking, it is the impregnable rock upon which the anti-Mormon forces have taken their stand. Having been raised in the Reorganized Mormon Church, I was, from boyhood, taught that this claim is a myth; that the "Manuscript Found" had come to light in Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, in 1884, and that it bears no resemblance, whatever, to the Book of Mormon. The influence of this training followed me even after I had apostatized, and for some years, in papers read before ministerial associations and elsewhere, I denied the Spaulding theory and attributed the Book of Mormon to the joint work of Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. In this position I was, later, confirmed by reading the book, "Doctrines and Dogmas of Mormonism," by D. H. Bays(1897), whose views, I found, coincided exactly with my own. It was not until a copy of A. T. Schroeder's little booklet, "The Origin of the Book of Mormon, Re-examined in Its Relation to Spaulding's 'Manuscript Found, '" fell into my hands that I began to see the strong points in the Spaulding theory which I had overlooked. This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland declared: "Not everything in life is so black and white, but the authenticity of the Book of Mormon and its keystone role in our religion seem to be exactly that. Either Joseph Smith was the prophet he said he was, a prophet who, after seeing the Father and the Son, later beheld the angel Moroni, repeatedly heard counsel from Moroni's lips, and eventually received at his hands a set of ancient gold plates that he then translated by the gift and power of God, or else he did not. And if he did not, he would not be entitled to the reputation of New England folk hero or well-meaning young man or writer of remarkable fiction. No, nor would he be entitled to be considered a great teacher, a quintessential American religious leader, or the creator of great devotional literature. If he had lied about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, he would certainly be none of these... If Joseph Smith did not translate the Book of Mormon as a work of ancient origin, then I would move heaven and earth to meet the "real" nineteenth-century author. Surely there must be someone willing to step forward-if no one else, at least the descendants of the "real" author-claiming credit for such a remarkable document and all that has transpired in its wake. After all, a writer that can move millions can make millions. Shouldn't someone have come forth then or now to cashier the whole phenomenon? " Let me quote a very powerful comment from President Ezra Taft Benson, who said, 'The Book of Mormon is the keystone of [our] testimony. Just as the arch crumbles if the keystone is removed, so does all the Church stand or fall with the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. To hear someone say something so tremendously bold, so overwhelming in its implications, that everything in the Church - everything - rises or falls on the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and, by implication, the Prophet Joseph Smith' s account of how it came forth, is astounding. Either the Book of Mormon is what the Prophet Joseph said it is or this Church and its founder are false, fraudulent, a deception from the first instance onward." "Either Joseph Smith was the prophet he said he was and he is not entitled to be considered a great teacher or a quintessential American prophet or the creator of great wisdom literature. If he lied about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, he is certainly none of those." I am suggesting that we make exactly that same kind of do-or-die, bold assertion about the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the divine origins of the Book of Mormon. We have to. Reason and rightness require it. Accept Joseph Smith as a prophet and the book as the miraculously revealed and revered word of the Lord or else consign both man and book to Hades for the devastating deception of it all My name is John Rigdon - great nephew of Sidney Rigdon. In this book I explore the real genesis of the Book of Mormon relying on family documents and published affidavits of people who witnessed firsthand the creation of the Book of Mormon - men and women who knew Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon personally over their entire lifetime. For more than 150 years the Mormon Church has endeavored to hide the true origin of the Book of Mormon and gone to great lengths to silence and discredit witnesses and in many cases change original documents, but now that the Internet has made access to those records available to anyone who takes the time to research them, the true history of the fraud of the Book of Mormon and the rise of the LDS cannot be denied by any rational seeker of truth. The time has come to set the record straight, once and for all. My book will show the involvement that my Uncle Sidney had in the whole affair.
