Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eli Ginzberg, the dean of applied economics in the United States, has studied the changing contours of economic and social structures in American for over sixty years. A long-time consultant to the federal government, including the last nine presidents of the United States, his name is indelibly linked with the creation, expansion, and refinement of employment policy and human resource needs. This second volume of memoir reviews in fascinating detail the ideas, events, and personal encounters of Ginzberg's long and distinguished career and illuminates the principal influences that helped to shape his life and work. As in his previous memoir, My Brother's Keeper, which dealt with the Jewish dimension of his life, Ginzberg draws on public and personal history to provide an evocative and intellectually rich account of a tumultuous period in American policy. In the first part the author recounts his unusual family background—his father was an eminent Judaic scholar and his mother a social activist of decidedly unconventional attitudes—and probes the intellectual and emotional roots of his unbreakable ties to New York City and Columbia University. The formative inheritance of scholarship and social concern marked Ginzberg's career in the wider world of academia and government. The chapters in the second part relate his service at the Pentagon throughout World War II and much of the Cold War period, and provide candid and penetrating views of American presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan. Later chapters dealing with consultation and study missions, in the advanced and underdeveloped world, yield valuable insights into the dynamics of economic change. Ginzberg's long experience as an analyst of US corporations and foundations informs his discussion of the problems and challenges facing these institutions at the end of the twentieth century. A unique blend of autobiographical reflection and clear-sighted observation, The Eye of Illusion will be of interest to sociologists, economists, historians, and political scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical relationship between American urbanization, industrialization and the emergence of the civil rights movement is examined in this thesis in order to establish why the African-American Civil Rights Movement occurred. The book discusses many factors that were fundamental to causing the rise of the civil rights movement. It begins with a brief introduction to the African-American's political, economic and social conditions since the American Civil War and goes on to consider the effects of the two Great Black Migrations in which millions of black Americans moved to the big industrial cities and began to learn how to make effective use of their voting rights to protect their own interests. Finally the book examines the effect of the Second World War and also the role of the Supreme Court.

Book excerpt: An anthology of important scholarship on the Civil War and Reconstruction eras from the journal Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association. Since 1931, the South Carolina Historical Association has published an annual, peer-reviewed journal of historical scholarship. In this volume, past SCHA officers of Michael Brem Bonner and Fritz Hamer present twenty-three of the most enduring and significant essays from the archives, offering a treasure trove of scholarship on an impressive variety of subjects including race, politics, military events, and social issues. All articles published in the Proceedings after 2002 are available on the SCHA website, but this volume offers, for the first time, easy access to the journal’s best articles on the Civil War and Reconstruction up through 2001. Preeminent scholars such as Frank Vandiver, Dan T. Carter, and Orville Vernon Burton are among the contributors to this collection, an essential resource for historical synthesis of the Palmetto State’s experience during that era.

Book excerpt: Raymond Wolters maintains that Ronald Reagan and William Bradford Reynolds made the "right turn" when they questioned and limited the use of racial considerations in drawing electoral boundaries. He also documents the Reagan administration's considerable success in reinforcing within the country, and reviving within the judiciary, the conviction that every person - black or white - should be considered an individual with unique talents and inalienable rights. This book begins with a biographical chapter on William Bradford Reynolds, the Assistant Attorney General who was the principal architect of Reagan's civil rights policies. It then analyzes three main civil rights issues: voting rights, affirmative action, and school desegregation. Wolters describes specific cases: at-large elections and minority vote dilutions; congressional districting in New Orleans; legislative districting in North Carolina; the debates over the Civil Rights Act of 1964; social science critiques of affirmative action; the question of quotas; and school desegregation and forced busing. Because Ronald Reagan and William Bradford Reynolds were men of the right, and because most journalists and historians are on the left, Wolters feels the "people of words" have dealt harshly with the Reagan administration. In writing this book, he hopes to correct the record on a subject that has been badly represented.
