Book Synopsis The Triumph of the Cross by : Richard Viladesau
Download or read book The Triumph of the Cross written by Richard Viladesau and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sequel to Richard Viladesau's well-received study, The Beauty of the Cross: The Passion of Christ in Theology and the Arts from the Catacombs to the Eve of the Renaissance. It continues his project of presenting theological history by using art as both an independent religious or theological "text" and as a means of understanding the cultural context for academic theology. Viladesau argues that art and symbolism function as alternative strands of theological expression sometimes parallel to, sometimes interwoven with, and sometimes in tension with formal theological reflection on the meaning of crucifixion and its role in salvation history. This book examines the two great revolutionary movements that gave birth to the modern West: the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. This period was eventful for both theology and art, and thus particularly fruitful for Viladesau's project. Using individual works of art, over sixty of which are reproduced in this book, to epitomize particular artistic and theological models, he explores the contours of each paradigm through the works of representative theologians as well as liturgical, poetic, artistic, and musical sources. To name a few examples, the theologies of Savonarola, Luther, Calvin, and the Council of Trent, are examined in correlation to the new situation of art in the era of Fra Angelico, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Dürer, Cranach, and the Mannerists. In this book, Viladesau continues to deepen our understanding of the foremost symbol of Christianity.
Download or read book I Thirst written by Stephen Cottrell and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A movingly personal book ... the fruit of much deeply meditated sharing of the good news with people of all sorts. Reading it is a real discovery of the fresh waters of faith.' - from the foreword by Rowan Williams 'After this, when Jesus knew that all now was finished, he said, "I am thirsty."' Jesus' words from the cross - a picture of God sharing the world's suffering, experiencing our humanity - can be a window onto God's purposes, leading to a deeper appreciation of his overwhelming love. I Thirst, the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent book for 2004, helps us explore what the death of Jesus means and how it relates to our lives today. Bishop Stephen Cottrell follows the passion story in John's Gospel, penetrating the deep mystery of a God who loves humanity no matter the cost. Each layer of meaning in the simple cry 'I thirst' is an invitation to consider our own lives and think again about what it means to be a follower of Christ in the modern world.

Book Synopsis Testimony of Triumph by : John M. Drescher
Download or read book Testimony of Triumph written by John M. Drescher and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-07-08 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down through the years many books have been written to help us plumb the depth of sin, to help us understand the significance of Calvary. Today there is a dearth of writings about the cross and particularly about the seven times that Jesus spoke from the cross. These utterances of Christ are known as the Òseven last words of JesusÓ or Òthe seven words of the cross.Ó Yet, in a most striking way, the words of Jesus from the cross tell us the essential meaning of Christ's coming and death. This book on Christ's words from the cross is shared with the deep desire that readers may see, not only the centrality of the cross for salvation, but also the centrality of the cross in enabling us to live the Christ life. These messages were written to help the reader identify with the cross for salvation. But they do not stop there. They also insist on an identification with the cross to the point that we die to the old life and walk in a newness of life.
Book Synopsis A Century of Triumph by : Christopher Chant
Download or read book A Century of Triumph written by Christopher Chant and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 17, 1903, on the windswept beaches of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright piloted the world's first powered flight, in one of the most famous moments in history. Within a few short years, airplanes of various designs were lifting into the air over Europe and America. Soon, the entire world was caught up in the fevered advance of flight and airplanes, Zeppelins, autogyros and helicopters were making the world a much smaller place. To celebrate the first full century of powered flight premier aviation historian Christopher Chant and world-famous illustrator John Batchelor have joined forces to showcase an astonishing march of progress. From the early experiments of gliderman Otto Lilienthal to the moon walk of Neil Armstrong, it has indeed been A Century of Triumph. From the golden age of Zeppelins to the extreme design experiments of World War II to the fierce modernism of supersonic fighter jets, A CENTURY OF TRIUMPH demonstrates the full richness of mankind's flying craft. In addition to Batchelor's illustrations, the book features never-before-published vintage watercolour posters of pre-World War I aviation races and a treasure trove of photographs. Chant's text combines full histories of the planes themselves with biographical essays on some of the great figures of the twentieth century: the Barnstormers, Igor Sikorsky, Amelia Earhart, Chuck Yeager, and the Apollo XVII astronauts, among others. A CENTURY OF TRUMPH is a visual and factual feast for anyone who marvels at the majesty of flying.
