Book excerpt: Triplet state properties of solutions containing chlorophyll monomers and dimers have been determined by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy. Using a simple exciton formalism, the triplet state zero-field splittings and intersystem crossing rate constants found for the chlorophyll dimers and for the isolated chlorophyll molecule are utilized to determine the orientation of the pigment molecules in the dimer. The triplet state results indicate that water-linked chlorophyll dimers in vitro form single plane-parallel structures. Similar calculations using monomeric measurements by ODMR on bacteriochlorophyll and zero-field splittings for in vivo preparations of photosynthetic bacteria indicate that the dimer structures in vivo may be more complex than those observed in solution.

Book excerpt: The photoexcited triplet state properties of chlorophyll dimer systems in vitro were investigated by zero-field optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy at 2°K. Measurements of the triplet state zero-field splittings, overall triplet lifetimes, and individual spin sublevel intersystem crossing rate constants were obtained for solutions of chlorophyll a and zinc-substituted chlorophyll a and for the covalently linked dimeric derivative of pyrochlorophyllide a. The triplet state properties found for these systems are interpreted within the framework of the triplet exciton model to assess the applicability of the exciton approach in determining the geometry of chlorophyll aggregate systems and to evaluate structural features of chlorophyll systems proposed as models for in vivo chlorophyll.

Book excerpt: The Chlorophylls reviews developments in study of chlorophylls, and at the same time summarizes the state of knowledge in the more established areas of the physics, chemistry, and biology of chlorophylls. The book is organized into four sections. The first section deals with the chlorophylls as chemical entities, and treats their isolation, analysis, chemistry, and synthesis. The second concerns chlorophylls in real and colloidal solution and in the solid state in vitro, and includes the effects of aggregation on visible, infrared, and NMR spectral properties. The third section treats the biosynthesis, organization, and properties of chlorophylls in the plant and bacterial cell, and the fourth is concerned with the photochemical and photophysical behavior of chlorophylls in vitro and in vivo. It is hoped that this work will help those investigating selected aspects of chlorophyll to keep abreast of other methods and approaches, and will provide the interested scientist with a modern, conceptually organized treatment of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is intended as an introduction to the physical principles governing the main processes that occur in photosynthesis, with emphasis on the light reactions and electron transport chain. A unique feature of the photosynthetic apparatus is the fact that the molecular structures are known in detail for essentially all of its major components. The availability of this data has allowed their functions to be probed at a very fundamental level to discover the design principles that have guided evolution. Other volumes on photosynthesis have tended to focus on single components or on a specific set of biophysical techniques, and the authors’ goal is to provide new researchers with an introduction to the overall field of photosynthesis. The book is divided into sections, each dealing with one of the main physical processes in photosynthetic energy conversion. Each section has several chapters each describing the role that a basic physical property, such as charge or spin, plays in governing the process being discussed. The chapters proceed in an orderly fashion from a quantum mechanical description of early processes on an ultrafast timescale to a classical treatment of electron transfer and catalysis on a biochemical timescale culminating in evolutionary principles on a geological timescale.

Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flash Photolysis and Pulse Radiolysis: Contributions to the Chemistry of Biology and Medicine presents the interaction of radiation with biomolecules, which is either beneficial o deleterious to life. This book discusses the biochemical reactions that are not radiation-induced by selectively generating certain types of free radicals present in normal metabolic processes. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the principle of both pulse radiolysis and flash photolysis with photoelectric detection. This text then examines the applications of flash photolysis and pulse radiolysis to the chlorophylls, bile pigments, hemoglobin and myoglobin, and the porphyrins. Other chapters consider the carotenoids related to photosynthesis. This book discusses as well the role of proteins in nearly all biological processes, including enzymatic catalysis, muscular contraction, immune protection, mechanical support, and genetic information. The final chapter deals with the structures and importance of radiosensitizers. This book is a valuable resource for chemists and biochemists.

Book excerpt: Bioenergetics, the topic of volume 5 of this Series, is concerned with the energetics, the kinetics, and the mechanisms of energy conversion in biological systems. This phenomenon can be investigated on diffe rent levels of complexity. On a global level the role of biological pro cesses for the steady state of our enviroment is considered. At the physiological level, the relation between energy input and the physiolo gical state of an organism is of interest, while at the cellular level the biochemical pathways for degradation and synthesis of all relevant substrates is investigated. At present the majority of bioenergetic stu dies pertain to the molecular level. The processes in a cell are cataly zed by a large number of proteins called enzymes. The enzymes in volved in energy transduction can be considered as molecular ma chines which transform energy from one form into another, or transfer energy from one process to another. Living systems operate far from equilibrium and are open in the ther modynamic sense, i. e. they exchange energy and matter with the sur roundings. Chapter 1 presents the principles of non equilibrium thermo dynamics applied to biological systems. About 0. 05% of the energy from the sunlight which reaches the surface of the earth is used by plants and algae as well as some bacteria to synthesize organic com pounds, and thus supplies all organisms with the energy necessary for life.

Book excerpt: The fundamental understanding of the production of biological effects by ionizing radiation may well be one of the most important scientific objectives of mankind; such understanding could lead to the effective and safe utilization of the nuclear energy option. In addition, this knowledge will be of immense value in such diverse fields as radiation therapy and diagnosis and in the space program. To achieve the above stated objective, the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors embarked upon a fundamental interdisciplinary research program some 35 years ago. A critical component of this program is the Radiological and Chemical Physics Program (RCPP). When the RCPP was established, there was very little basic knowledge in the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology that could be directly applied to understanding the effects of radiation on biological systems. Progress of the RCPP program in its first 15 years was documented in the proceedings of a conference held at Airlie, Virginia, in 1972. At this conference, it was clear that considerable progr:ess had been made in research on the physical and chemical processes in well-characterized systems that could be used to understand biological effects. During this period of time, most physical knowledge was obtained for the gas phase because the technology and instru mentation had not progressed to the point that measurements could be made in liquids more characteristic of biological materials.

While we still intend to produce a volume only if a suitable number of excellent chapters in the forefront of biological magnetic resonance are available, our philosophy is to present a pedagogical yet critical description and review of selected topics in mag netic resonance of current interest to the community of biomedical scien tists. This volume fulfills our goals well. As always, we open the volume with a chapter which directly addresses an in vivo biological problem: Phil Bolton's presentation of new techniques in measuring 31 P NMR in cells. Lenkinski's chapter on the theory and applications of lanthanides in protein studies covers the details, highlights, and pitfalls of analysis of these com plexes in biochemical NMR. Reed and Markham summarize the interpreta tion of EPR spectra of manganese in terms of structure and function of proteins and enzymes. Dalton and colleagues describe the applications to biological problems of the relatively new capability of time domain ESR. Finally, we are pleased to offer a departure from mainstream magnetic resonance with the comprehensive and stimulating chapter by Gus Maki on the theory, instrumentation, and applications of optically detected magnetic resonance.
