Mycorrhizal fungi play important roles in plant root systems and soil biology and chemistry. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Agriculture - New Insights provides a comprehensive overview of arbuscular mycorrhizae. It is divided into three sections: “The Role of Mycorrhizae Fungi in Plant Growth”, “The Effect of Mycorrhizae on Plant Nutrition and Protection” and “Mycorrhizae Biology and Development”. Chapters provide a better understanding of these fungi, their application and management, and their effects on different types of plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth updated and revised edition of a well-received book that emphasises on fungal diversity, plant productivity and sustainability. It contains new chapters written by leading experts in the field. This book is an up-to-date overview of current progress in mycorrhiza and association with plant productivity and environmental sustainability. The result is a must hands-on guide, ideally suited for agri-biotechnology, soil biology, fungal biology including mycorrrhiza and stress management, academia and researchers. The topic of this book is particularly relevant to researchers involved in mycorrhiza, especially to food security, plant microbe interaction and environmental protection. Mycorrhizas are symbioses between fungi and the roots of higher plants. As more than 90% of all known species of plants have the potential to form mycorrhizal associations, the productivity and species composition and the diversity of natural ecosystems are frequently dependent upon the presence and activity of mycorrhizas. The biotechnological application of mycorrhizas is expected to promote the production of food while maintaining ecologically and economically sustainable production systems.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of different agriculturally important microorganisms and their role as plant biostimulants. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, Trichoderma, Cyanobacteria, Endophytes, and Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria have the potential to promote plant growth, disease management, nutrient acquisition, stress alleviation, and soil health management. Presenting an all-inclusive collection of information, this book will be important for students, academicians, researchers working in the field of sustainable agriculture, microbial technology, and biochemical engineers. It will also be of use for policymakers in the area of food security and sustainable agriculture. Introduces new microorganisms as plant biostimulants. Describes potential mechanisms of plant–microbe interaction for stress alleviation and crop improvement. Provides information about different microbial formulations (consortium) and their application to the alleviation of different abiotic stresses (salt, drought, nutrient deficiency, heavy metal, etc.) in plants. Discusses about psychrophilic microbes, endophytic microbes, and total plant microbiome and their uses as biostimulants for improving plant health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written in response to significant recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of parasitism in the Orobanchaceae, and breakthroughs in the control of the parasitic weeds Striga and Orobanche. It consists of 26 contributions by internationally recognized leading scientists. The main book chapters are grouped into two parts: · Part I – The Orobanchaceae and Their Parasitic Mechanisms · Part II – The Weedy Orobanchaceae and Their Control The first part provides cutting-edge information on all key aspects of plant parasitism, such as the structure, development and function of the haustorium; nutrient transfer and the physiology of the parasite-host association; host reaction to parasitic plants; seed production and germination; the strigolactones and host-parasite signaling mechanisms; the parasite genome, phylogenetics, evolution and epigenetics; and ecology. Topics of the second part include: the problem posed by the weedy parasites; population diversity and dynamics; molecular diagnosis of seed banks; and detailed discussion of the various management strategies, including agronomic, chemical and biotechnological approaches, as well as host breeding for resistance, allelopathy and biological control. This book is intended for plant scientists, university lecturers and students, agronomists and weed specialists, breeders and farmers, extension personnel and experts in tropical and subtropical agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have brought an upsurge of interest in the study of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, partly due to the realization that the effective utilization of these symbiotic soil fungi is likely to be essential in sustainable agriculture. Impressive progress has been made during the last decade in the study of this symbiosis largely as a result of increasing exploitation of molecular tools. Although early emphasis was placed on the use of molecular tools to study physiological processes triggered by the symbiosis, such as expression of symbiosis-specific polypeptides and modulation of host defences, other applications await. It was obvious to us that gathering leaders in the field to summarize these topics and point out research needs was necessary if we were to understand the physiology and function of AM fungi at a molecular level. In addition, we have taken the opportunity to present these reviews in a logical sequence of topics ranging from the initiation of the life cycle of the fungus to its functions in plant growth and in the below ground ecosystem. It was a challenge to limit this flood of information to the confines of one text. This is a very exciting time for mycorrhiza biologists and it is our hope that some of this excitement is conveyed to our readers.
