Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, grade: A.1, , language: English, abstract: The place of proverbs and oral literature in the sustenance of a culture cannot be over-emphasised. It is quite regrettable and disheartening that these aspects of culture are grossly ignored and abused these days across many cultures, for which most contemporary members of such cultures know little or nothing in/about these indigenous knowledge and cultures. Bekwarra is one of those cultures, with the contemporary Bekwarra acting negatively towards their culture in almost all phases. This paper is intended to rouse the interest and attention of such peoples, not only the Bekwarra, to their proverbs, oral literature and indigenous cultures towards their sustenance. It concludes that it is imperative to sustain cultures like Bekwarra through these aspects of culture, which involves constant/sustained interest in, teaching and learning cum transmission of these invaluable aspects of culture across generations. They should be constantly preserved, and taught both at home and school.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: B, University of Ibadan, course: African Linguistics, language: English, abstract: Some studies on Standard Yoruba already have detailed structural accounts on the pronouns. However, similar studies are needed in the regional dialects. This study, therefore, examined the pronouns in Ìlàjẹ, a south-eastern Yoruba dialect, with a view to providing a formal account that reveals the native speaker’s intuition of their structure. The study employed McCarthy’s Prosodic Morphological theory and Chomsky’s Minimalist Program as its theoretical framework incorporating phonology and syntax in the morphology of pronoun. Data were generated from the common use of personal pronouns among the Ìlàjẹ native speakers from Ayétòrò . Ayétòrò does not only have speakers with a high degree of dialect loyalty but does also have native speakers drawn all over Ìlàjẹland in fair representation. [...]

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, Makerere University (Faculty of Arts), course: Literature, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the intricate characteristics of Lumasaba (a language spoken in eastern Uganda) riddles and proverbs. It argues that these literary trajectories are poetically related. Through these oral literature forms, the ideologies of the Bamasaba people are enhanced. By studying these verbal esoteric aphorisms, the riddles, which have been relegated as children's playthings are given literary significance. Even the seemingly nosensical sound riddles project important messages to the reader, therefore worth of literary inquiry. The collection and interpretation of oral literature forms from predominantly orate societies is testimony to the notion that the libraries of society are fast passing away, and it is incumbent upon the young generation to document these verbal forms for posterity. In the discourse, an exegesis of the riddles and proverbs have been made to categorise them basing on literary features such as rhyme and rhythm, the symbolic elements, alliterations, metaphors, similies, onomatopoeiac expressions, parallelism, repetition, and rhetorical questions among other literary forms of expression. This interconnectedness points to the fluidity of oral texts to an extent that no single context is sufficient to explain their meanings. Sound riddles present a fascinating interpretation of the Bamasaba cosmology. They show that even untranslatable or nonsensical words give an insight into understanding the surrounding environment of the Bamasaba. Themes of life, ecological relationships and rain are pertinent aspects of Bamasaba’s world contained in riddles. It is established that language permeates the epicenter of riddles and proverbs. Of the literary features that imbue them, symbolism stands out as the most important feature. What is peculiar about Lumasaba riddles and proverbs is that regardless of the categorization or structure, they possess a variety of meanings that bring out core ideologies of the Bamasaba. The classification of proverbs into literal, symbolic and philosophical categories enables us to decipher the riddle in the proverb; we look for what it signifies. Harlod Garfinkel's theory of ethnomethodology has been applied to make sense of Lumasaba riddles especially the tenet of the centrality of langauge that communicates the world views and the philosophy of life of the people. Riddles are conduits of Lumasaba cultural values intended to socialize children and adults alike into useful citizens of the community.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject History - Africa, , course: History and International Studies, language: English, abstract: This discourse opens with an explicit exploration of the two schools of thought that have come to chart the course of Ugbo and Ifee-Yoruba historiography and are pivotal to unravel Ugbo-Ooni of Ife controversy. It also attempts a critical assessment of facts from existing literatures on Ugbo, Yorùbá history and oral account of both palaces in the pre-Odùduwà era. The aboriginals or earliest dwellers of Ile-Ife {Ule-Ufe in Ilaje dialect} have been the kernel of controversy between the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom and Ooni of Ìfe. Both monarchs present conflicting viewpoints which x-ray innate understanding. Thus, this antiquated controversy till date is devoid of agreement between the monarchs and their people which paves way for a witty dialogue in the academic community. Since this controversy is of antiquity, and may lingers on unabated. This study therefore explores the two views/schools of thought appertaining to this controversy, and critically examines facts from antiquity. The study notes that scholars have made tremendous strides through varied and robust publications to unmask the mysticism surrounding Obatala and Oduduwa’s personalities and have tried to lay to rest the Olugbo-Ooni’s controversy. These researches have been useful but non-conclusive. However, this study concludes that availability of evidence to enhance Yoruba historiography are essential hormones of objectivity.

The thrust of this piece is on the contributions of this all important venture to the historical reconstruction of Ile-Ife, Nigeria, the cradle of Yoruba civilization. Archeology as a discipline, as distinct from history but complementary to it, has played a facultative role in the historical reconstruction of preliterate societies overtime. The thrust of this piece is on the contributions of this all-important venture to the historical reconstruction of Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization. The fact that history deals with the past in time perspective, understandably makes it peremptory for the historical researcher to approach its study from a multidisciplinary perspective: Hence, Archeology.

Book excerpt: Document from the year 2017 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, , language: English, abstract: This study sought to investigate the economic and socio-cultural impact of refugees on the Kenyan communities. The data for this study was collected from primary and secondary sources. The research instruments were questionnaires and interview schedules. The study population comprised of 30 refugees, 10 camp officials and 20 locals. Purposive sampling was used to select 60 respondents. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, means and percentages were used in analyzing data. Unlike many communities whereby refugees are restricted to the camp, the situation in Kakuma Camp is different. The Kakuma refugees move freely to any part of the Kakuma. There is a good social relation between the host community and the refugees in Kakuma. There have been intermarriages between the refugees and the host community. The hosts and the refugees also attend some social events like weddings, funerals and child naming ceremonies together. However, there are some minor negative developments as a result of the refugees’ presence for almost two decades in the Kakuma community. These negative impacts include poor sanitation, scarcity of land, security issues and moral degeneration. This notwithstanding, the positive impacts of the refugees’ presence on the host community outweighed the negatives. Indeed, the presence of the refugees on Kakuma has turned the place from a small village to an urbanized centre. The Kakuma community can boast of much better modern infrastructural development springing up all over the town after the refugees’ settlement. The study found the types of development that can be associated with the presence of the refugees to include the provision of banks, telecommunication and Internet cafés.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: Crop residue burning is a technique used by the farmers for the preparation of land for next cultivation. Through this technique the remaining of crops like straw which remains in the field as residue after harvesting is burned. It’s an air pollution issue and concern for every one as this kind of practice by the farmers emits lots of handful gases in the air. Crop residue burning practice is common in almost every states of India. One can find such practice in Chhattisgarh too. Stubble burning is considered to be the cheapest methods for cleaning the field after harvesting. Though it’s a cheap practice but its impact is hazardous in nature and the most important concern for all is to stop such practice and to prevent air pollution. The smoke which is released from crop residue burning is a mixture of particles and chemicals produced by incomplete burning of carbon-containing materials and this is one of the reasons for many air born diseases like Asthma. All smoke contains carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and particulate matter or soot which is very harmful. Even Section 19(5) of The Air (Prevention And Control Of Pollution) Act, 1981 states that “If the State Government after consultation with the State Board, is of opinion that the burning of any material (not being fuel) in any air pollution control area or part thereof may cause or is likely to cause air pollution, it may, by notification in the Official Gazette, prohibit the burning of such material in such area or part thereof”. Now the question which comes here is that from various surveys and from images issued by NASA it’s cleared that in many states of India, Crop residue burning is practiced by the farmers which shows that either the Government is Silent or is unable to stop such practiced. Through this paper researcher will discussed about the impact and solution of stubble burning. Keywords: Smoke, Stubble Burning, Air Pollutant, Hazardous, NASA

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were selected from the Silver Jubilee edition of the Annual Conference of the Linguistic Association of Nigerian (LAN) which was held at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Abuja, Nigeria. The Silver Jubilee edition is dedicated to the father of Nigerian Linguistics, Professor Emeritus Ayo Bamgbose. Professor Emeritus Bamgbose was the first indigenous Professor of Linguistics in Nigeria, and the first black African to teach linguistics in any known university south of the Sahara. He was there from the very beginning, and together with co-operation of people such as the late Professor Kay Williamson, he nurtured Nigerian linguistics. He is not just a foremost Nigerian linguist, but also a most famous, respected, celebrated, distinguished, and cherished African linguist of all times. To be candid, Nigerian linguistics is synonymous with Professor Emeritus Bamgbose. In 58 well-written chapters by experts in their fields, the book covers aspects of Nigerian languages, linguistics, literatures and culture. The papers have not been categorized into sections; rather they flow, hence there is some overlapping in the arrangement. The book is an essential resource for all who are interested to learn about current trends in the study of languages, linguistics and related subject-matters in Nigeria.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject African Studies - Miscellaneous, , course: Curriculum Studies, language: English, abstract: Migration, which is the movement of people from one geographical location to another has remained at the centre of West African history for several centuries. Its centrality has been attributed to its role in influencing the socio-cultural and economic integration of the sub-region. A migrant can be described as a person who uproots himself from his original home and moves to a new place where he settles and establishes new links. This paper examines the socio-cultural integration that occurs among ECOWAS migrants in Nigeria. In order to examine the extents to which migration promote socio-cultural integration and peaceful co-existence among ECOWAS nationals and Nigerian citizens; the paper began with conceptual clarifications of the key terms of migration, migrants, integration as well as socio-cultural integration were reasonably discussed. It then reviewed the Nigerian migration policy as it relate to ECOWAS protocol on free moment of persons. It specifically dwelt extensively on the impacts and consequences of socio-cultural integration of ECOWAS migrants in Nigeria. The socio-cultural integration variables discussed in the paper include local language, religion, intermarriage, friendships/social network, family organization structure or cultural values, traditional food and traditional mode of dressing, among other.
