Book excerpt: With serious concerns about the conflicts within the Vatican hierarchy, President Reagan selects Colin McHugh, an international businessman, to secretly advise the Commandant of the Swiss Guard, the one man directly responsible for the safety of the Pontiff, that a Russian plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II is imminent. Unmasked by the Bulgarian cadre in Rome assigned to carry out the plot, McHugh discovers the identity of its leader and is also targeted for elimination. While the commandant bolsters the pope’s security and the Bulgarian cadre rehearses the assassin, McHugh, seeking information about the timing of the plot, evades kill attempts outside Rome, in Zurich and in the English countryside. The action moves swiftly, driven by a compelling cast: Claudette Arriaga, the airline stewardess with whom McHugh develops a personal relationship, helps him escape kill attempts outside Rome and in Zurich. *** Admiral Dan Stringer, Deputy Director of Reagan’s National Security Staff shakes the power tree in Washington to support McHugh, his Annapolis classmate. *** Dimitar Botov, the young Bulgarian lad conscripted to work for the Bulgarian cadre, possesses detailed information that could foil the assassination *** Kalina Lubanov, the seductive, but vicious Bulgarian agent, stalks McHugh *** and, Colonel Vic Vitucci, the Air Commando Leader, aborts his stratagem to allow McHugh to do it his way. All play captivating roles in THE TRIESTE INTRIGUE…propelling the reader back to that shocking event on May 13th 1981.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, Trieste was the chief seaport of the entire Austro-Hungarian empire, but today many people have no idea where it is. This fascinating Italian city on the Adriatic, bordering the former Yugoslavia, has always tantalized Jan Morris with its moodiness and melancholy. She has chosen it as the subject of this, her final work, because it was the first city she knew as an adult -- initially as a young soldier at the end of World War II, and later as an elderly woman. This is not only her last book, but in many ways her most complex as well, for Trieste has come to represent her own life with all its hopes, disillusionments, loves and memories. Jan Morris evokes Trieste's modern history -- from the long period of wealth and stability under the Habsburgs, through the ambiguities of Fas-cism and the hardships of the Cold War. She has been going to Trieste for more than half a century and has come to see herself reflected in it: not just her interests and preoccupations -- cities, empires, ships and animals -- but her intimate convictions about such matters as patriotism, sex, civility and kindness. Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere is the culmination of a singular career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed by French physicist Auguste Piccard and his son Jacques, the bathyscaph Trieste was a scientific marvel that allowed unprecedented scientific, technical, and military feats in the ocean depths. France and the United States both acquired and subsequently developed variants of the original bathyscaph. While both France and the United States employed the bathyscaph as a tool for scientific investigation of the deepest ocean depths, the U.S. Navy developed and employed the Trieste for military missions as well. From its earliest years, participants in the Trieste program realized that they were making history, blazing a trail into previously unexplored and unexploited depths, developing new capabilities and opening a new frontier. Comparisons with developments in space and the space-race between the United States and the Soviet Union often were made concerning the Trieste program and contemporary developments in undersea technologies and capabilities. The Trieste opened the entire oceans to exploration, exploitation, and operations. The bathyscaph was a first-generation system, a "Model-T" that spawned an entirely new industry and encouraged new concepts for deep-ocean naval operations. Advances in deep-sea technologies lacked the "gee-whiz" factor of the concurrent space race, but were highly significant in the development of new technology, new knowledge, and new military capabilities. Opening the Great Depths is the story of the three Trieste deep-ocean vehicles, their officers and enlisted men, and the civilians, often told in their own words, documenting for the first time the earliest years of humanity's probing into Earth's final frontier.

This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1790, Maurice Benyovszky’s posthumous memoir was an instant sensation. A tale of exploration and adventure beginning with his daring escape from a Siberian prison and ending with his coronation as King of Madagascar, it was translated into several languages and adapted for the theatre and opera. This book explores the veracity of this memoir and, more broadly, the challenges faced by the explorers of the age and the brutality of colonisation. The self-styled Hungarian Baron Maurice Auguste Aladar Benyovszky, Counsellor to the Duke of Saxony and Colonel in the service of the Queen of Hungary, was in fact only confirmed to have been an officer in a regiment of the Polish Confederation of Bar. While he did escape from Russian captors and subsequently travel to Japan, Formosa, China and Madagascar, many of his exploits were wildly exaggerated or simply invented. Andrew Drummond reveals an alternative picture of events by looking at statements from Benyovszky’s travelling companions and sceptical officials as well as contemporary documents from the places he claimed to have visited, untangling the truth behind his stories and examining what these stories can nonetheless tell us about the era in which Benyovszky lived. Witty and engagingly written, this book is fascinating reading for anyone interested in eighteenth-century colonial history and the story of early European and Russian explorers.
