Book excerpt: Arriving in America in 1904, Carlo Tresca began a nearly forty-year stretch as an active revolutionary. Nunzio Pernicone's definitive biography chronicles Tresca's larger-than-life personality, his revolutionary apprenticeship in Sulmona, Italy, and his subsequent career as fighter for liberty until his untimely death in 1943. The story of his life - as newspaper editor, labor agitator, anarchist, anti-communist, street fighter, and opponent of fascism - illuminates the lost world of Italian-American radicalism. Among friends and comrades Tresca counted revolutionary luminaries such as Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Big Bill Haywood, Alexander Berkman, Emma Goldman, and countless sovversivi. From his work on behalf of the IWW, to his editorship of numerous papers, including Il Proletario and Il Martello, and his assassination on the streets of New York City, Tresca's passion left a permanent mark on the American map.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete and comprehensive theory of failure is developed for homogeneous and isotropic materials. The full range of materials types are covered from very ductile metals to extremely brittle glasses and minerals. Two failure properties suffice to predict the general failure conditions under all states of stress. With this foundation to build upon, many other aspects of failure are also treated, such as extensions to anisotropic fiber composites, cumulative damage, creep and fatigue, and microscale and nanoscale approaches to failure.

Book excerpt: Fracture Mechanics covers classical and modern methods and introduce new/unique techniques, making this text an important resource for anyone involved in the study or application of fracture mechanics. Using insights from leading experts in fracture mechanics, it provides new approaches and new applications to advance the understanding of crack initiation and propagation. With a concise and easily understood mathematical treatment of crack tip fields, this book provides the basis for applying fracture mechanics in solving practical problems. It features a unique coverage of bi-material interfacial cracks, with applications to commercially important areas of composite materials, layered structures, and microelectronic packaging. A full chapter is devoted to the cohesive zone model approach, which has been extensively used in recent years to simulate crack propagation. A unified discussion of fracture criteria involving nonlinear/plastic deformations is also provided. The book is an invaluable resource for mechanical, aerospace, civil, and biomedical engineers in the field of mechanics as well as for graduate students and researchers studying mechanics. Concise and easily understood mathematical treatment of crack tip fields (chapter 3) provides the basis for applying fracture mechanics in solving practical problems Unique coverage of bi-material interfacial cracks (chapter 8), with applications to commercially important areas of composite materials, layered structures, and microelectronic packaging A full chapter (chapter 9) on the cohesive zone model approach, which has been extensively used in recent years to simulate crack propagation A unified discussion of fracture criteria involving nonlinear/plastic deformations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limit and shakedown analysis for structures can provide a very useful tool for design and analysis of engineering structures. "Structural Plasticity - Limit, Shakedown and Dynamic Plastic Analyses of Structure" provides more general solutions of limit and shakedown analysis for structures by using a unified strength theory. A series of solutions of plates from circular, annular plates to rhombus plates and square plates, rotating discs and cylinders, pressure vessels are presented. These results encompass the Tresca-Mohr-Coulomb solution of structure as special cases. The unified solution, which cannot be obtained by using a single criterion, is suitable to more materials and structures. Maohong Yu is professor of Department of Civil Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. He has authored 12 books including "Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications" and "Generalized Plasticity".

Book excerpt: Focussing on theoretical aspects of the small-strain theory of hardening elastoplasticity, this monograph provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of the mathematical theory and numerical analysis, exploiting in particular the great advantages gained by placing the theory in a convex analytic context. Divided into three parts, the first part of the text provides a detailed introduction to plasticity, in which the mechanics of elastoplastic behaviour is emphasised, while the second part is taken up with mathematical analysis of the elastoplasticity problem. The third part is devoted to error analysis of various semi-discrete and fully discrete approximations for variational formulations of the elastoplasticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasticity theory is widely used to describe the behaviour of soil and rock in many engineering situations. Plasticity and Geomechanics presents a concise introduction to the general subject of plasticity with a particular emphasis on applications in geomechanics. Derived from the authors' own lecture notes, this book is written with students firmly in mind. Excessive use of mathematical methods is avoided in the main body of the text and, where possible, physical interpretations are given for important concepts. In this way the authors present a clear introduction to the complex ideas and concepts of plasticity as well as demonstrating how this developing subject is of critical importance to geomechanics and geotechnical engineering. This book therefore complements Elasticity and Geomechanics by the same authors and will appeal to graduate students and researchers in the fields of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geomechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite materials are basically of two types. The first type is short fibres reinforced in a plastic matrix, and the other type continuous (long) fibres reinforced in a plastic matrix. The exact distinction between a short and a continuous fibre is discussed in Chapter 1. Continuous fibre-reinforced composite materials are referred to by many labels: FRP composites, advanced composites, fibrous composites, composite materials or simply composites. These terms are now generally accepted to mean the same type of material, namely, continuous fibre reinforced in plastic. In this book, the term fibrous composites is used to define a continuous fibre reinforced in plastic. Fibrous composites are presently in use for a variety of structural applica tions, and may offer an alternative to conventional metallic materials. The behaviour of fibrous composites subjected to a loading condition is very different from that of a metallic isotropic material. Therefore, 'new' analytical and testing methods are required to analyse a structural element and sections made from layered fibrous composites. There are a number of books written on the subject of composite materials. All of these are excellent in their content and achieve the authors' objectives.
