The introduction of such collateral evidence serves, however, to prove that the text of the treaty and the rule, by itself, is not so clearly in favor of the Chinese Government's view of the matter as has been maintained; for otherwise, the testimony of Lord Elgin would not have been appealed to in its support. As, however, Lord Elgin's authority has been invoked to assist in settling the real meaning of the treaty articles, it may not perhaps be considered super uous to examine what view be really took of them.
