Book excerpt: Can Sloane and James survive the lies and secrets surrounding them, or will The Program claim them in the end? Find out in this “chilling and suspenseful” (Publishers Weekly) second book in Suzanne Young’s New York Times bestselling Program series—now with a freshly reimagined look. How do you stop an epidemic? Sloane and James are on the run after barely surviving the suicide epidemic and The Program. But they’re not out of danger. Huge pieces of their memories are still missing, and although Sloane and James have found their way back to each other, The Program isn’t ready to let them go. Escaping with a group of troubled rebels, Sloane and James will have to figure out who they can trust, and how to take down The Program. The key may be in their hazy past, and to unlock it, they need the Treatment—a pill that can bring back forgotten memories, but at a high cost. And there’s only one dose.
Download or read book The Treatment written by Daniel Menaker and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jake Singer, an anxious young English teacher at a prestigious New York prep school, is heading for a life of personal despair and professional mediocrity. Recently abandoned by his girlfriend, disgusted with his own neurasthenic idling, and emotionally paralysed by a case of the vapors, he embarks on a course of psychoanalysis with a black-bearded, bodybuilding Cuban-Catholic Freudian whose accent and tactics are worthy of the Spanish Inquisition. Dr Ernesto Morales is a therapist from hell, a man who wields his sarcasm like a machete in the slash-and-burn process he call interpretation - otherwise known as the Treatment. Then Jake meets socialite-widow Allegra Marshall, and as he bounces from the couch to Allegra's bed in the allegedly real world and back again, his life takes on the eerie, overdetermined quality of an analytic session. Daniel Menaker's comic genius is matched and deepened by profound compassion, and by the wistful sadness that animates his wit. The Treatment is a stunning first novel.

Book Synopsis Deepening the Treatment by : Jane S. Hall
Download or read book Deepening the Treatment written by Jane S. Hall and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost everyone who crosses the therapist's threshold is looking for a second chance—a shot at living a richer, less restricted life. Understanding how echoes of the past resonate in and shape the present provides opportunities to resolve crippling conflicts and make new choices. Furthermore, such insight produces a sense of mastery. But not everyone is aware that the problems s/he brings into weekly therapy are just the first few bars of his or her song. Jane Hall wrote Deepening the Treatment to help the psycho-dynamically informed therapist help the patient recognize that exploring ideas and feelings is a journey worth taking and that the therapist is a trustworthy guide. Often, people need to wade before they feel comfortable diving into deep waters. Hall introduces a responsible if unconventional application of respectful, nondirective therapy, and she supports her vision with clinical examples and thoughtful attention to issues of basic technique—among them separation, termination, self-disclosure, frequency of sessions, tolerating patient rage, and, of course, interpreting the transference.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems by : Paul S. Haber
Download or read book Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems written by Paul S. Haber and published by Specialty of Addiction Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems have been periodically developed over the past 25 years. In 1993, the first version of these guidelines, titled: ‘An outline for the management of alcohol problems: Quality assurance in the treatment of drug dependence project’ was published (Mattick & Jarvis 1993). The Australian Government commissioned an update a decade later (Shand et al. 2003) and a further edition in 2009 to integrate the Guidelines with the Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol (National Health and Medical Research Council, NHMRC 2009; Haber et al., 2009). The present version of the Guidelines was also commissioned by the Commonwealth of Australia to remain current and integrated with the updated NHMRC consumption guidelines (2020). In order to ensure that guidelines remain relevant, the next set of guidelines should be updated in 2025, consistent with NHMRC recommendation that guidelines be updated every five years. These guidelines aim to provide up-to-date, evidence-based information to clinicians on available treatments for people with alcohol problems and are largely directed towards individual clinicians in practice, such as primary care physicians (general practitioners, nursing staff), specialist medical practitioners, psychologists and other counsellors, and other health professionals. Some chapters highlight service or system level issues that impact on clinicians and their patients. These include recommendations concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, stigma, and discrimination. Elsewhere, organisation capacity is implied, such as medical resources for withdrawal management where recommendations indicate use of medications. As all forms of treatment will not be readily available or suitable for all populations or settings, these guidelines may require interpretation and adaptation.
Book Synopsis The Treatment of Prisoners under International Law by : Nigel Rodley
Download or read book The Treatment of Prisoners under International Law written by Nigel Rodley and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the pioneering work that has become the standard text in the field. The first edition was one of the earliest to establish that the newly-developing international law of human rights could be set down as any other branch of international law. It also incorporates the complementary fields of international humanitarian law and international criminal law, while addressing the problems associated with their interaction with human rights law. The book is more than a descriptive analysis of the field. It acknowledges areas of unclarity or where developments may be embryonic. Solutions are offered. Recent developments have confirmed the value of solutions proposed in this edition and the previous one. Central to most of the chapters is the human rights norm of most salience in the treatment of prisoners, namely, the prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The early chapters focus on the period of first detention, when detainees are most at risk of having information or confessions, however unreliable, extracted by unlawful means. Voices contemplating the legitimacy of such treatment to combat terrorism have been heard in the wake of the atrocities of 11 September 2001. The book finds that the evidence clearly suggests that the absolute prohibition of such treatment remains firm. Other chapters deal with problems of poor prison conditions and of certain extraordinary penalties, notably corporal and capital punishment. A chapter explores ethical codes for members of professions capable of inflicting or preventing the prohibited behaviour (police and medical and legal professionals). Chapters are also devoted to the extreme practice of enforced disappearance and the contribution of the new convention on this phenomenon, as well as to extra-legal executions.

Book Synopsis New Insights into the Treatment of Aneurysms with Flow Diverters: Novel Indications and Therapeutic Advances by : Yu Zhou
Download or read book New Insights into the Treatment of Aneurysms with Flow Diverters: Novel Indications and Therapeutic Advances written by Yu Zhou and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publications of the International subarachnoid aneurysm trial (ISAT), endovascular treatment has become one of the most important treatments of intracranial aneurysms, and was used more and more in clinic settings. However, intracranial complex aneurysms (such as giant aneurysms, wide-necked aneurysms, fusiform aneurysms and dissecting aneurysms) still impose a huge challenge for clinicians. Flow diverter (FD) is a novel device for the treatment of aneurysms based on the understanding of hemodynamic mechanism of aneurysm occlusion. It could divert the blood flow from the aneurysm neck, and promote aneurysm occlusion without inserting coils into the aneurysms. In addition, the FDs had the advantage of simplifying the procedure and relieving the mass effect.
