Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Travels and Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson: The Amateur Emigrant; Across the Plains; The Silverado Squatters I was not, in truth, a steerage passenger. Although anxious to see the worst of emigrant life, I had some work to finish on the voyage, and was advised to go by the second cabin, where at least I should have a table at command. The advice was excellent; but to under stand the choice, and what I gained, some outline of the internal disposition of the ship will first be necessary. In her very nose is Steerage No. I, down two pair of stairs. A little abaft, another companion, labelled Steer age No. 2 and 3, gives admission to three galleries, two running forward towards Steerage No. I, and the third aft towards the engines. The starboard forward gallery is the second cabin. Away abaft the engines and below the officers' cabins, to complete our survey of the vessel, there is yet a third nest of steerages, labelled 4 and 5. The second cabin, to return, is thus a modified oasis in the very heart of the steerages. Through the thin par tition you can hear the steerage passengers being Sick, the rattle of tin dishes as they sit at meals, the varied accents in which they converse, the crying of their chil dren terrified by this new experience, or the clean flat smack of the parental hand in chastisement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson: Travel, Narrative, and the Colonial Body is the first book-length study about the influence of travel on Robert Louis Stevenson's writings, both fiction and nonfiction. Within the contexts of late-Victorian imperialism and ethnographic discourse, the book offers original close readings of individual works by Stevenson while bringing new theoretical insights to bear on the relationship between travel, authorship, and gender identity. Oliver S. Buckton develops "cruising" as a critical term, linking Stevenson's leisurely mode of travel with the striking narrative motifs of disruption and fragmentation that characterize his writings. Buckton follows Stevenson's career from his early travel books to show how Stevenson's major works of fiction, such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and The Ebb-Tide, derive from the innovative techniques and materials Stevenson acquired on his global travels. Exploring Stevenson's pivotal role in the revival of "romance" in the late nineteenth century, Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson highlights Stevenson's treatment of the human body as part of his resistance to realism, arguing that the energies and desires released by travel are often routed through resistant or comic corporeal figures. Buckton also focuses on Stevenson's writing about the South Seas, arguing that his groundbreaking critiques of European colonialism are formed in awareness of the fragility and desirability of Polynesian bodies and landscapes. Cruising with Robert Louis Stevenson will be indispensable to all admirers of Stevenson as well as of great interest to readers of travel writing, Victorian ethnography, gender studies, and literary criticism.

His only companion was a small donkey to carry basic necessities, and a commodious "sleeping sack". In the next 12 days, at a pace dictated by the donkey and carrying most of the supplies himself, he travelled 120 miles across rivers, mountains and forests. His stylish and witty account was published in 1879.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Essays of Travel by Robert Louis Stevenson.Stevenson did not include the essays in this travel writing volume. However, Travel Essays (London: Chatto and Windus, 1905) is included on the Robert Louis Stevenson site because it contains some of the author's travel essays that have not been collected elsewhere. This volume will be particularly useful for those who want to read more about traveling in Stevenson's footsteps.Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (Edinburgh, Scotland, November 13, 1850-Vailima, near Apia, Samoa, December 3, 1894) was a British novelist, poet, and essayist. His legacy is a vast work that includes travel chronicles, adventure and historical novels, as well as lyrics and essays. He is primarily known for being the author of some of the most classic adventure and fantasy stories in youth literature, such as Treasure Island, the adventure novel Kidnapped, the historical novel The Black Arrow and the popular horror novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, dedicated to the subject of split personality phenomena and which can be classified as a psychological horror novel. Several of his novels continue to be very famous and some of them have been taken to 20th century cinema several times, partly adapted for children.
