Book excerpt: Welcome to The Travel Club, and our inaugural e-zine! Cue the trumpet blasts and laser displays. You’re now a member not only of what we hope will become the essential club for those who are serious about travel, but of a club within that club – the group of travellers who were there with us from the outset. Thank you for joining us on this journey. In some ways, The Travel Club has been a long burn. We’ve discussed establishing a community of this sort on many occasions, but we’ve never quite got round to doing it. There always seemed something else ahead of it in the queue. Now, as we sit in lockdown, a club like this feels especially important. Of course, your support is hugely precious to us at this time, and we’re so very grateful for it. But first and foremost our aim is to create something special, something with genuine, long-term value. Something you’ll be pleased and proud to be part of. We want this e-zine to focus on travel features with real colour and passion, indulgent articles that represent a ‘warm bath’ of a reading experience. We want you to look forward to receiving it each month. And we want to involve you as far as possible, whether by offering unique competitions to enter and puzzles to solve or simply inviting your feedback on what we could do to make the e-zine better. And so, without further ado, I’ll leave you to dive right in. Thanks once more for signing up to The Travel Club. Please do let us know what you think. In this month's Travel Club e-zine: GETTING LOST by Hilary Bradt “Standout memories become a bit of a jumble if you’ve been travelling for 60 years. But one experience jumps out clearly as setting the benchmark for travel misery – the time I got lost for three days in the densest jungle in the world…” LITERARY LOCKDOWN by Helen & Neil Matthews "With imagination, you can go anywhere. The Chilterns and Thames Valley has inspired storytellers to create many of the world’s best and most beloved tales – come with us as we join Matilda, Will Stanton, Ratty and Mole on a literary adventure!” WORLDLY APPETITES: AJVAR Try your hand at recreating this Balkan speciality – the perfect accompaniment to a summer garden picnic! FROM THE ARCHIVES: YUGOSLAVIA by Hugh Brune We go back to 1989, in the company of Hilary Bradt and author Piers Letcher, to learn the fascinating story behind our first guide to Yugoslavia. Cue retro photos, glasses of home-made Šlivovice and tales of the dark arts of coding Slavic accents. HOPS, SKIP AND A JUMP by Rupert Wheeler & Ted Bruning Britain has some of the world’s best breweries. The expert authors of our brand-new Britain in a Bottle book pick out a few of the very finest. COMPETITION: WIN A BREWERY TOUR AT SHEPHERD NEAME We’ve teamed up with Britain’s oldest brewery to offer one lucky winner (and three friends) an award-winning tour and tasting experience. THE BRADT TRAVEL TEASER Suffering from a case of lockdown brain? Get those cogs whirring again with our tricky travel crossword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the 12th issue of The Travel Club! A whole year has passed since the pandemic first hit, a year that seems to have gone in a flash while at the same time dragging on forever. The Travel Club was launched in May 2020, back during the early days of the first lockdown. As guidebook sales slumped, we knew that our survival lay in the support of our readers, a community of dedicated travellers. Your support surpassed anything we could have imagined, and that is something for which we will always be grateful. But The Travel Club was never a charitable endeavour. We wanted to create something that offered genuine and long-term value to its members, something that would become a much-loved, essential resource for those who are serious about travel. I hope you feel we’ve succeeded. The e-zine has gone from strength to strength each month, withstories and contributions from far and wide – just take a look at this bumper issue! – and we’ve continued to build the list of exclusive membership benefits and discounts too (many of which will come in handy as the world begins to open up). Of course, if you’ve any feedback or suggestions of ways in which we could improve things further, or you’d be interested in contributing yourself, please do drop us a line at [email protected]. We want to do the very best we can and – when we start exploring the world again – to do so hand in hand with all those who were with us during the dark times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bolsheviks took power in Russia 1917 armed with an ideology centered on the power of the worker. From the beginning, however, Soviet leaders also realized the need for rest and leisure within the new proletarian society and over subsequent decades struggled to reconcile the concept of leisure with the doctrine of communism, addressing such fundamental concerns as what the purpose of leisure should be in a workers' state and how socialist vacations should differ from those enjoyed by the capitalist bourgeoisie. In Club Red, Diane P. Koenker offers a sweeping and insightful history of Soviet vacationing and tourism from the Revolution through perestroika. She shows that from the outset, the regime insisted that the value of tourism and vacation time was strictly utilitarian. Throughout the 1920s and '30s, the emphasis was on providing the workers access to the "repair shops" of the nation's sanatoria or to the invigorating journeys by foot, bicycle, skis, or horseback that were the stuff of "proletarian tourism." Both the sedentary vacation and tourism were part of the regime’s effort to transform the poor and often illiterate citizenry into new Soviet men and women.Koenker emphasizes a distinctive blend of purpose and pleasure in Soviet vacation policy and practice and explores a fundamental paradox: a state committed to the idea of the collective found itself promoting a vacation policy that increasingly encouraged and then had to respond to individual autonomy and selfhood. The history of Soviet tourism and vacations tells a story of freely chosen mobility that was enabled and subsidized by the state. While Koenker focuses primarily on Soviet domestic vacation travel, she also notes the decisive impact of travel abroad (mostly to other socialist countries), which shaped new worldviews, created new consumer desires, and transformed Soviet vacation practices.

Book excerpt: Every one of Connecticut's 169 towns has a story shaped by its geography and its people--the first inhabited the state more than 10,000 years ago, the Dutch traders, English settlers, and Africans--enslaved and free--who settled towns as one of the original 13 colonies, and successive waves of immigrants who moved its story forward. It's a small state with amazing variety that makes the 169 Club a fun and rewarding adventure. You'll experience historic town greens and new city centers, revitalized mills sprouting microbreweries and local farms offering local farm-to-table foods, and maritime villages and rural upland communities. Connecticut has it all! This guide, written by town historians and other local boosters, offers the backstory to your discovery of what makes Connecticut so special. - Elzabeth J. Book excerpt: BANTUSTAN is an illustrated travelogue, novel, atlas and encyclopedia. It is at once a textbook for independent travel in Africa, an illustrated atlas, a collection of life stories, an intimate confession, a list of little secrets and shame. Alternating between three narrators, it is a story of division, isolation and contact. Bantustans were reservations for Black Africans set up by the apartheid regime; in this book, bantustans refer to the bubbles in which we all live our lives. The three protagonists, as well as the people they encounter along the way, are constantly struggling to escape these multi-layered bubbles - of ego, family, social circle, class, race, religion, ethnicity, language, nationality etc - and establish contact with the rest of the world. Such attempts are often painful and sometimes downright disastrous, leading to a series of conflicts, disappointments and crises, but ultimately confirming the possibilities and importance of human connections. With a collection of maps, infographics and data visualizations for non-linear reading, BANTUSTAN is an example of ergodic and interactive literature. Readers can choose how to move through the book: in the traditional linear fashion, or using the maps as visual interfaces for skipping from one story to another. The maps represent a tapestry of pictograms, ideograms, scripts, labyrinths, emblems, motifs, secret messages and hidden clues for the reader to discover and decipher.BANTUSTAN contains a total of 32 full-page illustrations (19 of which are maps), as well as 25 smaller illustrations/glyphs.Visit www.bantustanbook.com to learn more about the book, the trip and the authors.
