Book Synopsis The Transition in the Contribution of Living Aquatic Resources to Food Security by : Meryl Williams
Download or read book The Transition in the Contribution of Living Aquatic Resources to Food Security written by Meryl Williams and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1996 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fishing industrys aggressive and expanding search for fish from the sea reached a turning point in 1990. After many years of increasing production, the global marine and inland catch from natural stocks declined from the 1989 peak of about 89 million tons to 85 million tons in 1993. Aquaculture production did not increase enough to meet the shortfall, and total production also fell in 1990 and 199. Present indications are that production from natural stocks will be below the current level in the year 2020; at best, it will maintain its present level. The author addresses five major issues: (1) maximizing the use of aquatic resources; (2) resource management; (3) intensification of fisheries exploitation; (4) integration of fisheries and aquaculture; and (5) the difficult problem of balancing national versus international interests.
Book Synopsis Water Resources in the Twenty-First Century by : Rosegrant, Mark W.
Download or read book Water Resources in the Twenty-First Century written by Rosegrant, Mark W. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1997-03-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, Mark W. Rosegrant assesses global water supply and demand, describes in detail the forces contributing to water scarcity, and lays out a number of strategies for managing water in the future. Any solution, Rosegrant asserts, will need to involve both the careful exploitation of new sources of water and strong measures to stimulate more efficient use of water. Policies must treat water not as a free good, as they often do now, but rather as a scarce commodity that comes at a price. Cooperation between countries sharing the same water basin will also become increasingly important as water becomes more scarce.

Book Synopsis Pest Management and Food Production by : Montague Yudelman
Download or read book Pest Management and Food Production written by Montague Yudelman and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their comprehensive paper, Montague Yudelman, Annu Ratta, and Davi Nygaard examine the key issues with regard to pest management and food production over the coming decades. They draw attention to the lack of adequate information on the magnitude and impact of pest losses; without such information, policymarkers are handicapped when devising strategies for meeting food needs. The authors address both chemical and nonchemical approaches to pest management, highlighting the importance of biotechnology. There is growing public sentiment against biotechnology but little appreciation as yet of its contributions to alleviating hunger by, among other things, controlling pest losses. The authors also address the important subject of the roles of different actors in pest management, most notably the private sector.

This book is the first reliable, comprehensive base of evidence for taking stock and taking care of the world's diverse ecosystems. • deals with the critical issues that focus on the link between ecosystems and people • highlights the goods and services that ecosystems provide and illustrates the benefits of a better understanding and better management of the planet's natural wealth • reports on pilot studies by leading scientists and international institutions assessing the state of the world's ecosystems - forests, croplands, grasslands, freshwater systems and coastal areas • increases the understanding of human dependence on nature • raises awareness of environmental threats • provides examples of wise stewardship from all corners of the globe • focuses on four main issues: population and human well-being, food and water security, consumption, energy and wastes, trace emissions since the Kyoto protocol • gives data tables for more than 150 countries It demonstrates the power of information and new digital technologies to transform the way we interact with our environment and is particularly important for environmentalists, scientists, professionals, journalists, policy-makers and students.
