Book excerpt: This book examines the drivers of, and barriers to, participation of women in the Asian labour market for its socio-economic development and structural transformation. Based on original comparative research and extensive fieldwork, Transformation of Women at Work in Asia highlights the commonalities as well as the diverse nature of challenges that women across Asia face in gaining access to more and better jobs. Findings show that women across the continent have contributed significantly to its spectacular growth story; yet, social norms and economic factors limit their levels of participation. The book calls for a comprehensive approach to improve opportunities for women's participation in the labour market as well as for the freedom to engage in paid employment. This will, in turn, contribute to a more inclusive growth process. It addresses important challenges faced by women workers and provides policy options for governments to promote decent work opportunities for women across social strata.

Bringing together the parallels between the two great transformations, it focuses on both the continuities and breaks and, importantly, it shows them from the grassroots point of view, emphasizing the local factor. Chapters show the international and transnational aspects of Russian women’s agency of different spheres and different historical periods. The book goes on to raise new research questions such as the evaluation and comparison of Soviet society and contemporary Russia from the point of view of gender and women’s possibilities in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of a French wig maker, a young American widow, and a Cuban cigar maker intersect to startling effect in this masterful, atmospheric novel from Catherine Chidgey Tampa, Florida, 1898: a hazy frontier where the Old World meets the New, where miracles of transformation are possible and the soil is so fertile that dry sticks take root and flower. Dominating the town is the new Tampa Bay Hotel, a fairy-tale castle that in the wintertime is a magnet for the finest sorts of people. During the off-season, the city is quiet, but a few residents remain. Among these is a most exotic creature by the name of Monsieur Lucien Goulet III, wig maker to the wealthy and glamorous-indeed to any resident of Tampa whose desire for his transformations is keen enough to meet his price. As winter nears its end, Goulet is entranced by a head of hair belonging to the young widow Marion Unger. But this material, without which he absolutely cannot form his greatest masterpiece, is hard to come by, being still attached to its owner. Determined to go forward with the project, Goulet drives his gifted night scavenger--a teenage cigar maker who is a refugee from the war in Cuba--to increasingly extreme efforts. As the lives of these three unlikely accomplices become ever more entwined, Goulet's true nature becomes disturbingly clear, leading to an electrifying conclusion.

How do you find yourself when everything you thought you knew about yourself seems lost? Who do you turn to when the reflection in the mirror is someone you no longer know? When do you decide that it's time to transform, not only your life but also everything in it? The stages we go through in life, the encounters we have, and the moments that turn our lives in multiple directions are the very things we need to transform. Every butterfly is born a caterpillar. To some, that caterpillar is ugly and unattractive, its true purpose only very few of us know. Many of us just see the beautiful ending in the butterfly. But what does it take to get there? The place in life we are in now is most important, it's where we evolve, change, and transform. People will often times say you have changed and you are not the same. Well, as you grow in God and transform, you shouldn't be the same. There should be something different in your walk, your talk, the way you live, and the way you think. As each person positively transforms into God's desired masterpiece, we should be in awe of amazement and joy of not only what God has done but that you were privileged to journey with them. Now, let me journey with you as you begin, start over, or pick up where you left off in transforming. Remember don't despise any stage you are in when transforming; even the caterpillar has a lot to offer. As a matter of fact, caterpillars have quite a few amazing facts three of which stick out to me: (1) the caterpillars only job is to eat; (2) caterpillars maintain their legs, even after transforming into butterflies; and (3) caterpillars have to be creative in defending themselves. As growing women transforming into the image that God has created us to be, our main job should be to eat. We should be consuming God's love, His word, and everything God has for us to receive. Like the caterpillar, there are some things that God has planted in each of us that we will not be without at the end of blossoming into the beauty we were made to be. In life, we are going to go through an abundance of experiences; to top it off, the devil spends a lot of time scheming and planning attacks against us. Finding the tools that help us move gracefully in life is often hard. The Bible is always the best guide to dodging every bullet, but without studying the word of God, you never learn to use it to its full capacity. Are you ready to finally to get your wings? We are all becoming, so just BECOME!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the life of Virginia Gildersleeve, the dean of Barnard College from 1911 to 1947, who dedicated her life to expanding women’s collegiate opportunities to match those of men, and to allow women entry into professional and graduate programs. Gildersleeve was the first academic to use the media to define for the American public what higher education--and particularly what higher education for women--meant. The only woman to sign the United Nations charter, she made waves by implementing the first program to allow women into the Navy. This book explores how Gildersleeve’s life exemplifies the expanded and changing educational opportunities for women during the Progressive Era and early twentieth century, with the rise of feminists, progressive reformers, and educational philosophers. Although Gildersleeve is nearly forgotten, her importance to women’s higher education, women’s inclusion in the US military, and world peace is captured in this blend of historical analysis and life history.
