Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training System, Moral Training School, and Normal Seminary for Preparing School-Trainers and Governesses The Training System must be taken and judged of as whole, and not in its disjointed parts. Some of itspractical points may indeed be successfully pursued apart, but only as one entire machine for training the) child can it be responsible for results. Twenty odd years ago, when we first published the principles of the Training System, after having had eleven years' experience of its effects in three schools, we fearlessly asserted that moral Training Schools were the great desiderata for the cultivation of youth. Bible training, Gallery secular lessons, and Moral training, to which we have already adverted, and which may be stated as peculiar to the system, are conducted on one and the same principle with children of every age. The only distinction being that in the Initiatory and Junior Schools the broader outlines are first given, whereas in the more advanced and with older scholars these outlines are progressively filled up at each lesson with greater minuteness. We shall now briefly notice some Elementary branches, which have been adapted more or less to the principle of the Training System. MODE OP ANALYZING ONE SENTENCE DAILY DURING THE ORDINARY HEADING LESSONS. During the progress of an ordinary reading lesson, suppose from a collection in natural history, or any scientific subject, the master may proceed as follows, fixing upon one sentence, having some distinct point of information: -- 1. Read it on the principles already stated, page 128. 2. Picture out the general meaning of what is read. 3. Spell the whole sentence progressively, each child by turns, or simultaneously. 4. Parse it. 5. Fix upon one or more etymological roots, from which diverge; see page 218. 6. Then you may require sentences to be formed and expressed, as under the head Mental Composition. Whatever number of sentences each child or all the children may have read for the sake of practising the sounds and also analyzed, so as to interest and instruct them in what they do read, a single sentence or paragraph on this principle will daily afford them an exercise at once in reading, understanding, spelling, grammar, etymology, and mental composition. Writing.--In teaching to write, there is nothing peculiar in the method followed in the Model..

Book Synopsis The American State Normal School by : C. Ogren
Download or read book The American State Normal School written by C. Ogren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.
