Is the question which must occur over and over again to one who studies the adjustments and readjustments of industry. The child in school must be brought to understand the industrial problems ahead of him, and no less the worker in the Shop or factory must be brought to see that only through increasing enlightenment represented by education, will he be able to solve his life problems, increase his productive power, and make progress toward full stature as a citizen. Putting industrial problems into the schools and putting education into the factory involve a high degree Of co - opera tion among all the persons concerned. They must make con tacts, get acquainted, and learn from each other. How can these contacts be found? Why are they necessary? What will happen to schools which do not co-operate with industry, and what will happen to industrial establishments whose workers have not the habit of studying and learning? These questions must impel serious thinking men and women for ward to find the right relationships between doing and thinking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Training of the Boy There is in progress in America today a slow-going, subtile movement which bids fair to revolutionize the entire social order. By this I mean the tendency toward rendering common industry cultural and spiritualizing. It is the watchword Of this volume that common work can be so related to the industrial worker everywhere that he may not only find exceeding great joy in his daily employment, but that he may continue to develop his personality in such ways as to make peace, content ment, and spiritual poise predominating elements Of his character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Industrial Education for Use in Teacher Training Classes On page 243 the author of this book puts his finger upon one of the weaknesses in the present situation regarding industrial education, and at the same time points out one of the most fruitful fields of effort. He says, "One of the great problems connected with vocational education is the systematic training of a sufficient number of instructors for existing and proposed vocational schools." The lessons of our industrial unpreparedness as revealed by the war have not been lost; never in our history has there been such a keen realization of the dependence of production upon skill, and the part that wise methods of training can have in cultivating skill. A few years ago we were greatly concerned about supplying skilled workers; now we realize the equal necessity of training men and women to utilize the skill which the workers bring to their daily employment; hence the demand for training foremen and employment managers. In our ways and means for meeting these increasing demands we are at once fortunate and unfortunate; fortunate in adequate financial support for sound instructor training plans; unfortunate in a shortage of people to organize and direct them, and doubly unfortunate in a lack of organized practical material for use in instructor (teacher) training classes. Teacher-training under the terms of the Smith-Hughes Act occupies a unique position in that a considerable amount of money may be made available at the very outset of the work - a condition which has rarely existed in American educational history when new types of education have been proposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trade Tests: The Scientific Measurement of Trade Proficiency There is a universal demand for increased production; a more economical use of material and man power is the only way in which the world can be rapidly restored to a normal condition. It is obvious to all that greater economy in the use and adaptation of material resources is greatly needed, but it is by no means so clearly recognized that the human resources of the country, and indeed of the world, must be equally husbanded. Depleted man-power is the sad aftermath of war. Although this country has not suffered great losses on the field of battle, although the number of our skilled men has not been lowered appreciably, there is no doubt that, as time advances, reduced immigration will cause inconvenient labor shortage. No industry can afford, at the present juncture, to overlook any device or method which gives promise of more scientific selection, placement and training of its employees. At a time when the human resources of the country were taxed to the uttermost, the War Department, to meet the problem of placement of its skilled personnel, undertook extensive researches. One of the important outgrowths of this experimentation was the Trade Test. This instrument was devised and constructed to make it possible for a trained examiner, unskilled in any particular trade, to measure in objective terms the trade standing of any recruit claiming skill in any of the several hundred trades necessary to the work of the army. The success of this work, undertaken by the Committee on Classification of Personnel, was largely due to the whole-hearted cooperation given by a large number of industrial plants, in the three centers where the Army Trade Test Division was established. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Apprenticeship and Industrial Education This is a sufficient definition of an institution that was the chief means of trade education until the advent of the machine era. The apprentice differs from the ordinary child laborer in that he not only works i or his master but receives instruction in his trade. Apprenticeship ceases when child labor degenerates from education to routine. Since now the shop no longer trains the child worker, other agencies must be created to assume the responsibility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the High School There is a widespread and' growing demand, in this country for manual training and industrial education. This demand is an effort to meet some of the fundamental educational needs of our school system and the social need for a larger number of intelligent trained workers for the industries. It has resulted in the teaching of a variety of the manual or mechanic arts and in the development of a number of systems of instruction. Almost all of the large cities in every State have spent large sums for buildings and equipment in order to meet the demand. The work in these centers is thoroughly organized, and the excellent results thus far attained have fully justified the large expenditures. In order to extend the benefits of instruction in manual train ing to more schools, legislation to encourage and assist schools undertaking this work, has been enacted in many of the States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Apprentice Training: With Special Reference to the Engineering Industry The services employed in industry comprise a number of grades, which may be divided into two broad classes, consisting of manual and non-manual workers. Important as is the latter, it is the former which at the present time demands the greater attention. Different industries in a community present certain distinguishing features, and although there is considerable local variation in manufacturing conditions, similar fundamental considerations apply to all industries in all countries. These involve the selection of workers for particular positions according to inherent suitability, and their education and training along lines tending to produce greatest economy of working. It is the purpose of this book to inquire into these considerations in so far as they affect the skilled manual worker. Attention is paid principally to conditions in England and to workers engaged in engineering manufacture, but the general treatment and conclusions apply universally. Of the four parts into which the book is divided, the first deals with the place of the manual worker in industry and the economic importance of training to the individual, to the community, and to the State. In the second part the characteristics demanded from a worker by virtue of a manual occupation are set forth, and the extent to which these are developed by the existing educational system is discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Employments: Specially Prepared for the Use of Boys and Girls on Entering the Trades, Industries, and Professions The result of one or two generations of conditions of factory labour and keen trade competition is seen in cities like Glasgow and Dundee, where the general tend ency among working-class parents is to look upon the child in the light of a wage-earner, and place him or her wherever the highest wage is to be obtained and at the earliest possible opportunity Under the more normal conditions which prevail in towns with few factories, the inquiry into the supply and demand for boys in the various occupations shows that most boys like a trade where they can use their hands and become skilled workmen. Joinery and engineering are two of the most popular trades: usually far more boys apply for such work than can be accommodated. In short, the average boy would not desire to go to factory work: his natural bent would be to take work in which more s00pe is allowed for his own skill. If by force of circumstances and environment, the boy's bent cannot be encouraged, then the next best thing to be done is to see that the hours of labour are not too long, and that methods of interesting and developing his mental and moral faculties are provided, together with a due measure of open-air recreation.
