Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trails of Yesterday, first published in 1921, is ranked with the best firsthand accounts of ranching on the northern Great Plains in the 1870s and 1880s. This classic of cow-country literature is rich in authentic frontier history. Born in England in 1842, John Bratt came to America when he was twenty-two, and in 1866 he joined a wagon train traveling from Nebraska City to Fort Phil Kearny. Bratt gives a vivid view of the country along the Great Platte River Road, reporting on the condition of the trail, meetings with Indians such as Dull Knife, and encounters with buffalo herds. There are splendid descriptions of the few forts then protecting the long trail—Forts Kearny, McPherson, Mitchell, and Sedgwick—and of the road ranches of John Burke and the notorious Jack Morrow, among others. Bratt was a cattle rancher for more than two decades and was instrumental in the settlement of North Platte, Nebraska.

Book excerpt: A story of the Old West in which a girl from the East finds herself confronted with a strange type of man dwelling in the shadow of an ancient grudge. Dakota, the man, first convinces her that he is a brute beyond redemption and then gradually wins her back to the belief in his own essential manliness. Before this happens, however, there has been an attempted bribe, an attempted murder that seems the response to the bribe and a wild ride through the night, that ends at Dakota's shack -- Goodreads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been 200 years since their epic trek across Western America, yet Lewis and Clark still evoke strong emotions. For good or ill, the captains redefined America's sense of identity, and interest is at an all-time high in reexamining their expedition and its effects. Timed for publication amid the four-year bicentennial celebration of their journey, this book retraces the path taken by Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery from 1804 to 1806. The author draws on the explorers’ journals and period illustrations for historical context, and complements this material with modern color photography from the roads and rivers along the trail blazed by Lewis and Clark. Readers will also hear from history enthusiasts who are enamored by the explorers’ feats as well as from those who view Lewis and Clark as villains.

Book excerpt: Compared to such famous frontier paths as Lewis and Clark's route and the Oregon Trail, most people know little about the seminal trade route we call the Santa Fe Trail, yet this rough wagon road endured longer than any other American trail west of the Mississippi River. From 1821 to 1880, bold and daring men loaded their wagons with trade goods and set out from Missouri to Santa Fe, in the newly independent nation of Mexico. These merchants, teamsters, and travelers exchanged not only material goods, but also ideas and customs, forever altering the cultural and political landscape for American, Mexican, and Indian peoples along the route. Taking the reader on an imaginative tour from end to end, author Ronald Dulle often stops to explore how wagon trains are organized or what a campsite looks like; to notice the strange food, clothing, and habits of the day; or to imagine the feeling of a rainy day in the saddle. With dozens of stunning color photographs and a fascinating narrative, Dulle helps readers envision the frontier experience and appreciate the myriad material and cultural changes the Santa Fe Trail brought to our growing nation.

As Dan wrestles with both physical pain and haunting memories, Deb begins the grueling trek for help. Her subsequent disappearance and the specter of a skier with questionable motives raise the stakes during the feverish search in subzero temperatures. Sidelined by his own imprudent actions, Dan’s helplessness fuels his anxiety over his wife’s safety. If only he realized the depth of the darkness threatening all that he holds dear. In this tale of devotion, deception, mystery and romance, author Marijo Smith weaves a narrative that questions the foundation of one man’s loyalties.
