Book excerpt: From the visionary rebellion of Easy Rider to the reinvention of home in The Straight Story, the road movie has emerged as a significant film genre since the late 1960s, able to cut across a wide variety of film styles and contexts. Yet, within the variety, a certain generic core remains constant: the journey as cultural critique, as exploration beyond society and within oneself. This book traces the generic evolution of the road movie with respect to its diverse presentations, emphasizing it as an "independent genre" that attempts to incorporate marginality and subversion on many levels. David Laderman begins by identifying the road movie's defining features and by establishing the literary, classical Hollywood, and 1950s highway culture antecedents that formatively influenced it. He then traces the historical and aesthetic evolution of the road movie decade by decade through detailed and lively discussions of key films. Laderman concludes with a look at the European road movie, from the late 1950s auteurs through Godard and Wenders, and at compelling feminist road movies of the 1980s and 1990s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best selling author B.N. Rundell continues the compelling saga of reluctant lawman Reuben Grundy in Book 6 of the Plainsman Western Series. With the Civil War raging across the land, Reuben thought Colorado Territory was far enough away from the fighting. His time of peace would be short-lived as he was called to South Park to quell southern sympathisers' recruiting efforts. After leaving their peaceful cabin in the mountains, and being confronted by a suspicious band of partisans, he was forced to do what he could to deal a measure of justice to a band of Confederate Guerrillas-the notorious Reynolds gang-terrorizing the territory. A complacent sheriff, an absentee militia, and terrified residents made reluctant marshal Reuben's task all the more difficult. Add in some angry miners and businessmen that chose vigilante justice, and the situation rapidly devolved into pandemonium. Reuben's moral character wouldn't allow him to stand by as others were shot down and robbed by uniformed military men, no matter which side of the war they were on. Familiar country beckoned, but so did time alone with his new wife... It was time to make the right decisions, but would he be able to?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if George Washington's crossing of the Delaware had led to a catastrophic defeat and the collapse of the American Revolution? This is William Watson's world. As a thirteen-year-old boy from a farm in Graves End near New York City, he is swept up in what he knows as the Great Rebellion - a war that takes the lives of both his parents. He joins the rebel army just before its defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn, and shares its suffering as it retreats across New Jersey into Pennsylvania. He is at Washington's side at the Battle of Trenton, the rebel's final defeat and surrender. Escaping from Hessian captivity, William survives to face the challenges of growing up in British North America. He falls in love, learns a trade, and matures into manhood. He endures another war and overcomes the hardships and dangers of life on the North Carolina frontier. Now eighty years old, William tells his life story, but he is careful not to excuse his sometimes less than admirable behavior. He makes mistakes, suffers their consequences, and is willing to tell the reader about them. Do the British treat the defeated Americans harshly, as they did the Scots and Irish who rebelled during the 18th century, or do they take a gentler approach? The Great Rebellion offers an answer to that question that may surprise you. And what about the rest of the world? Does the failure of the American Revolution stop the French Revolution from occurring or are the grievances that led the long-suffering French to overthrow their King so strong that their rebellion occurred anyway? Again, the answer may surprise you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the stories of singularly courageous West Coast women—driven, obsessed, sometimes desperate people whose nonconformist beliefs and actions made them rebels in society’s eyes. Many faced hardship and ridicule as they pursued their goals. In these vivid biographies, Rich Mole chronicles the lives of some of the most celebrated and controversial women in BC, Washington and Oregon, including: pioneer Catherine Schubert, who faced danger and starvation on her heroic journey west; ballot-box rebel Abigail Scott Duniway, who endured poverty and scathing criticism during her fight for women’s suffrage; Irene “Bonnie” Baird, who disguised herself as a nurse to write an exposé of their ordeals of Depression-era protesters; complex and contradictory doctor Bethenia Owens-Adair, who broke gender barriers yet is also remembered for a more tragic legacy. By demanding equality and respect in lecture halls, shipyards, government assemblies and operating theatres, these women helped shape the society we live in today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1885, it appeared that war was about to set the Canadian West aflame. Louis Riel had established a Metis provisional government at Batoche, and the Cree, led by war chief Wandering Spirit, had killed settlers, taken hostages and forced the capitulation of Fort Pitt. Among the forces marshalled to quell the unrest was an elite scouting unit of the Alberta Field Force, led by the charismatic Sam Steele of the North West Mounted Police. Aggressive, tenacious and supremely confident, Steele was a seasoned policeman who had earned a reputation for getting the job done. Composed of North West Mounted Police, ex-militiamen and savvy cowboys from Calgary, Steele's Scouts relentlessly pursued the Cree warriors and their prisoners through the western Saskatchewan wilderness, acting as shock troops and often fighting at close quarters. The story of Sam Steele and his contingent is an unforgettable account of the campaign that marked the end of the Wild West on the Canadian prairies.

In the meantime, led canoe trips in Minnesota and on the Green and Colorado rivers and extensively hiked the mountains of California and Wyoming. His lifelong philosophy could be summed up by his auto license plate reading WHO SAYS.
