Book excerpt: 'Ox-Team Days on the Oregon Trail' is a book written by Ezra Meeker about his experience traveling the Oregon Trail by ox-drawn wagon as a young man, migrating from Iowa to the Pacific Coast. Later on in his life, Meeker became convinced that the Oregon Trail was being forgotten, and he determined to bring it publicity so it could be marked and monuments erected. In 1906–1908, while in his late 70s, he retraced his steps along the Oregon Trail by wagon, seeking to build monuments in communities along the way. His trek reached New York City, and in Washington, D.C., he met President Theodore Roosevelt. He traveled the Trail again several times in the final two decades of this life, including by oxcart in 1910–1912 and by airplane in 1924.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Trail to Sunset To Winthrop this bold incursion of commercial ism into these sacred precincts was comparable only to some death-dealing Juggernaut. He was a good-enough American, he thought, but here was a spirit which for the first time brought his loyalty into warring clash with the untrammeled freedom of his spirit. Book excerpt: An exciting and deeply moving story of survival, courage, and friendship on the Appalachian Trail. Toby has to finish the final thing on The List. It's a list of brave, daring, totally awesome things that he and his best friend, Lucas, planned to do together, and the only item left is to hike the Appalachian Trail. But now Lucas isn't there to do it with him. Toby's determined to hike the trail alone and fulfill their pact, which means dealing with little things -- the blisters, the heat, the hunger -- and the big things -- the bears, the loneliness, and the memories. When a storm comes, Toby finds himself tangled up in someone else's mess: Two boys desperately need his help. But does Toby have any help to give? The Trail is a remarkable story of physical survival and true friendship, about a boy who's determined to forge his own path -- and to survive.

It may be along an old wood road choked with grasses and plantain and bordered with brambles and weeds, or by a crooked cow path, twisting and turning, but the way is that to deep delight, and the heart of the child is glad as he journeys. O the sweet wildwood, with its incense of pine and of balsam, with its ferns, mosses, and lichens, with its rustle of leaves, sighing of zephyrs, and its sense of infinite peace! How it folds its green arms about you, soothing your fevered mind with its own deep languor, breathing a benediction sweet as the sleep of childhood! What couches of plush or velvet are as cool and inviting as the moss-covered knolls of the forest, where I lay my tired head upon the breast of my mother, Nature, and am a little child again, full of hope and trust and infinite yearning? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunset Trail St. Augustine is said to be the first founded town with in the frontiers of this country, as the same are made and laid to-day. And yet it is in warm dispute, with a deal to tell on the New Mexican side of the question, if Santa Fe be not the age equal of her sister of the Everglades. Certainly, and say the most disappointing thing for Santa Fe, there was a no greater space than two or three years to fall between. Considered as regions, Florida versus New Mexico, the latter should be the older. In its settlement, that stretch lying between Santa Fe and San Francisco, and south to the Rio Grande and the now North Mexican line, was in a fairly populous and flourishing condition three centuries and more ago. To say New Mexico or Arizona hath a f ar-ofl' savage sound, and yet both were dominated of European influences and polka-dotted with many a white man's town long years before Salem went hanging her witches or Pocahontas interfered to save the life of Smith. It was over three and one-half centuries ago that Coronado ransacked Colorado and Kansas for those seven cities and the gold he could not find. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trail, Vol. 12: September, 1919 What the letter shows is simply this: that Captain Mellon has an opinion on the subject and has ex pressed it. I believe that it a well established rule in court proceedings that before the mere opinion of a witness can be received as evidence, he must qualify as an expert in the case. Dawson, it would seem, attempts to do this for his witness. On page 6, he says: and there is probably no man liv ing who knows the Colorado as he knows it, and following the letter asks this \question: Aside from the testimony of some one who had come through with White, what could be more convincing than this letter from Captain Mellon? Men 01 every race, nation and faith have fled, wan dered and drifted to this great and inviting land, till we may boast of an aggregation the like of which can not be seen elsewhere on earth. And the charm of the New World has possessed them like a spell. Discontented, it may be, in the first location, and the second, and even the third, their faces are still toward the setting sun; they almost never turn back. A generation may live and die in the Old Do minion; the second comes on to Ohio, the third to Illinois, and so, with Westward Ho! For watchword, the flood of folks moves on, each wave reaching farther than the one before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Trail: Short Stories of Western Life These Tales of the Trail are based upon actual facts which came under the personal ob servation of the author, whose reputation as a writer of the frontier is national. His other works have met with phenomenal success, and these Sketches, which have appeared from time to time in the current literature of the United States, are now compiled, and will form another interesting series of stories of that era of great adventures, when the country west of the Mis souri was unknown except to the trappers, hunters, and army officers. Some of the characters around which are woven the thrilling incidents of these Tales were men of world-wide reputation; they have long since joined the choir invisible, but their names as pioneers in the genesis of great States which then formed the theater of their exploits will live as long as the United States exists as a great nation.
