Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 181. Filling the need for a 20-year lag in substantial consideration of the midlatitude ionosphere, this volume focuses on work that takes advantage of GPS and UV imaging from satellites over the past decade, two methods that have profoundly transformed our understanding of this stratum of the atmosphere. Its interdisciplinary content brings together researchers of the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, polar and equatorial ionospheres, and space weather. Modeling and assimilative imaging of the ionosphere and thermosphere show for the first time the complex and global impact of midlatitude ionospheric storms. The editors invited the leading experts in the following areas to contribute the chapters herein: Characterization of Midlatitude Storms Electric Field Coupling From the Heliosphere and Inner Magnetosphere Thermospheric Control of the Midlatitude Ionosphere Ionospheric Irregularities Experimental Methods and New Techniques These themes were chosen to create a path for understanding the midlatitude ionosphere. They continue to be largely valid and represent a coherent division of the subject matter. They will be critical for understanding space weather during the upcoming solar maximum. This book was inspired by the Chapman Conference of the same name held January 2007.

Book excerpt: The aim of this research is the determination of the structure and variation of the topside ionosphere at mid-latitudes during the sunrise period, based on electron-density measurements obtained with the aid of Alouette I, the Canadian topside-sounder satellite. Electron-density profiles obtained from Alouette I soundings recorded at various North American stations provide the basis for the determination of the scale-height of the electron-density distribution profiles. The scale-heights profiles, with proper physical assumptions, are interpreted in terms of the combined ion and electron temperatures and the relative ion concentration in the altitude range of 450 to 750 km. Book excerpt: Electron densities and temperatures as well as omnidirectional fluxes of hyperthermal positive ions (E > 28 eV) were measured by means of spherical Langmuir probes aboard INJUN 5 at altitudes > 2000 km during a major geomagnetic storm. The electron density in the mid-latitude trough decreased and the temperatures increased during the early phases of the storm. As the storm progressed the trough's position moves equatorward with plasma depletions being observed to an invariant latitude of 40 deg during the early recovery phase. The latitude of the transition between heavy and light ion dominance also moved equatorward, but recovered at a rate slower than that of the electron trough's position. Hyperthermal ions detected in the vicinity of the trough were ring current particles reaching to the satellite's altitude. The minimum thermal electron densities in the trough were found to be within 1 deg of latitude of the maximum ring current flux. Maximum electron temperatures were measured several degrees equatorward of this position. INJUN 5 electron temperatures are compared with those measured by Alouette 2 over the reported positions of SAR arcs. The observations are also used to further evaluate a method developed for calculating the position of the ring current using ground magnetic fluctuations.

Book excerpt: Plasma temperatures in the ionosphere are fundamental indicators of the heat balance between the charged and neutral species and are associated with both the dynamics and structure of the upper atmosphere. At low and middle latitudes the temperatures are determined by solar energy inputs and energy exchange between charged particles and neutrals. During the daytime the thermal electrons are heated by photoelectrons and cooled by conduction and collisions with ions. The ions are heated principally by collisions with electrons and ions and cooled by conduction to lower altitudes. During the nighttime, when the source of photoionization is absent, both ions and electrons are cooled by conduction to lower altitudes where heat is lost to the neutral gas. Thus, variations in both electron temperature and ion temperatures can be used to explore the heat exchange processes in the topside ionosphere. A numerical model called Sami2 is Another Model of the Ionosphere (SAMI2) and measurements from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F15 satellite are used in this study of plasma temperatures in the topside ionosphere. The effects of ion composition on the ion and electron temperatures in the mid-latitude topside ionosphere during daytime are examined by using data that has been previously derived from the DMSP F15 measurements in 2004–2006. The heat exchanged between the different constituent ions and the role played by the solar zenith angle and the solar ionizing flux (F10.7) is suggested from the variations of electron and ion temperature with electron number density and composition. The SAMI2 model adds further interpretation of the electron and ion temperature distribution by capturing the major mechanisms that control the heat flow in the topside ionosphere at middle latitudes. Due to the absence of constituent ion temperature information in the original DMSP dataset, this model study is also used to retrieve both TH+ and TO+ and verify the observed dependence of ion temperature on ion composition. The model calculation shows that topside TH+ should reside between TO+ and Te, and further confirms the preferential heat transfer from the electrons to H+ in the topside. Finally, an implementation of a more sophisticated analysis procedure to extract constituent ion temperatures from the Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA) measurements is utilized to reexamine the DMSP F15 dataset. The result shows that in the daytime, when electrons are actively heated, TH+ is a few hundred degrees higher than TO+ at all longitudes. The nighttime temperature difference between TH+ and TO+ is indicative of mass dependent adiabatic heating and cooling processes across the equatorial region. These adiabatic processes present clear longitudinal variations in the ion temperatures and measured plasma flows that are associated with season and magnetic declination.

Book excerpt: Observations from the high resolution spherical electrostatic analyzer experiment aboard ISIS I have been used to study large amplitude irregularities at low latitudes in the topside ionosphere. The irregularities appeared as plasma depletions near the magnetic equator and were observed up to satellite apogee (3500 km). The altitude-local time distribution of the depletions was such that those at altitudes greater than 2000 km were found only in the post-midnight sector. This result agrees with the predictions of a simple MHD model for plasma bubbles drifting under the influence of gravity-buoyancy forces. (Author).

The model varies with time and solar conditions; it is specified by observations or predictions of the height of the F layer maximum; and it is independent of latitude. Results indicate that a mean thickness parameter can be estimated to within about 15 percent and that there is a useful reduction in the day to day variability.

Book excerpt: The report summarizes work performed in modelling the characteristics of the high/mid latitude ionosphere in two areas; light ion distribution in the plasmasphere under diffusive equilibrium conditions and plasma distribution in the F-region and topside ionosphere in the Southern Hemisphere as a result of the magnetospheric induced convection. In addition there was an attempted experiment on high latitude ionospheric modification. The light ion study showed larger solar cycle and diurnal variations in the plasmaspheric light ion content than observed by whistler measurements. The plasma convection studied predicted more dramatic effects in the gross features of the Southern hemisphere polar region compared to the Northern Hemisphere; this is attributed to the greater offset between the geographic and geomagnetic poles in the Southern Hemisphere. One of the major hemispheric differences observed was the appearance of a dayside trough at certain local lines in the Southern Hemisphere winter. The detection of this feature by ionospheric measurements of 800 km by the DMSP-F4 satellite confirmed the model prediction.
