Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: Jabez Stone, young farmer, has just been married, and the guests are dancing at his wedding. But Jabez carries a burden, for he knows that, having sold his soul to the Devil, he must, on the stroke of midnight, deliver it up to him. Shortly before twelve Mr. Scratch, lawyer, enters and the company is thunderstruck. Jabez bids his guests begone; he has made his bargain and will pay the price. His bride, however, stands by him, and so will Daniel Webster, who has come for the festivities. Webster takes the case. But Scratch is a lawyer himself and out-argues the statesman. Webster demands a jury of real Americans, living or dead. Very well, agrees the Devil, he shall have them, and ghosts appear. Webster thunders, but to no avail, and at last realizing Scratch can better him on technical grounds, he changes his tactics and appeals to the ghostly jury, men who have retained some love of country. Rising to the height of his powers, Webster performs the miracle of winning a verdict of Not Guilty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touching upon the legends surrounding the infamous captain William Kid, Washington Irving’s short story deals in feats of adventures, pirates, and buried treasure. The tempestuous life of William Kid and his return "laden with booty" gives vent to the rise of treasure-seekers, chasing wild rumours. Superstition, devilry, and magic intertwine in this short story that forms the backbone of American folklore tales about pirates and hidden, stolen goods. But do not hasten to grab the shovel – the aforesaid treasure is often guarded by the Devil himself. Versatile as the subject matter of his literary oeuvre, the name of Washington Irving still echoes in the corridors of the American literary canon. Having earned special status as a man of letters in America and Europe alike, Irving’s fame stems primarily from his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". An avid biographer and historian, his influence can be felt within a vast group of American and British authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, E. A. Poe, Charles Dickens, and Sir Walter Scott.

Book excerpt: A hold, biting novel by the author of Old Jules and Crazy Horse, The Tom-Walker spans three generations in a Midwestern family. The patriarch, Milt Stone, who lost a leg fighting in Grant's army, is the Tom-Walker, circusøslang for man on stilts. After the Civil War he takes his family west to the Missouri country. There he gains a reputation as a raconteur and as a passionate defender of the little man who works hard, fights the wars, and gets squeezed out by powerful interests. He lives to see his son and grandson fight in World War I and World War II, respectively, and return home from those wars, maimed like him, only to have to resume a fight just to stay alive. Crowded with living characters, The Tom-Walker never loses the larger view of American history. From the Gilded Age to the Atomic Age, everybody is "trying to be either a Jay Gould or a Jesse James, out for easy money, everybody [is] wanting to be king of something: mines, railroads, cattle, outlaws, anything." How people like the Stones fare is the story within this story.

Book excerpt: The Devil himself narrates this uniquely American Faust story, told with a rousing and beautiful folk-inspired score. Old Scratch is challenged when the miserly and slothful Tom Walker refuses to trade his soul for treasure. But after doing Tom the favor of getting rid of his pesky wife, the Devil is able to strike a deal, making Tom a wealthy lender to the foolish and seedy of the aristocracy. When one of his clients commits suicide, Tom realizes his own mortality and seeks absolution to avoid his fate, resulting in a darkly comical cautionary tale of the price of avarice.

Book excerpt: More than thirty years ago, Tom Walker published Fort Apache: New Yorks Most Violent Precinct, introducing the world to the 4-1, a South Bronx precinct that was home to more murders than the entire city of San Francisco. To this day, his story about life as police lieutenant in the 4-1 precinct remains the definitive account of the vicious cycle of violence that griped urban America in the late twentieth century. The battle between criminals and law enforcement did not end in 1971, but massive controversy over the books publication precluded the release of a sequeluntil now. With Return to Fort Apache: Memoir of an NYPD Captain, Walker finally tells the rest of his fascinating life story. Return to Fort Apache was written to counter the prevailing politically correct opinion that the officers in Fort Apache used their weapons first and their wits last. In addition, Walker hopes to memorialize the courageous officers he served with in the 4-1, to remember forever their sacrifices, their courage, and their daily brushes with death and violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diaries of Judith Malina, 1958-1971 collects the diaries of Judith Malina--artist, activist, and lifelong diarist--from a seismic period of her life and a formative era for her company with, The Living Theatre. This book is part of scholar Kate Bredeson's larger project to gather, edit, and introduce Malina's unpublished diaries. This volume covers thirteen years as Malina records her days, beginning in New York and ending in Ouro Preto, Brazil. During this decade-plus, Malina experienced profound transformation as she co-led The Living Theatre while it opened its first theatre space in New York, saw her theatre seized by the IRS, lived and toured in Europe, travelled to Morocco to discuss a split of the company, and relocated to Brazil to launch a new phase of personal and professional work. Malina's scrupulous diaries record The Living's extraordinary activities, illustrate the thinking of a key figure in late-twentieth-century theatre, and paint a dazzling portrait of the times in which she lived. Bredeson includes a significant critical introduction that situates Malina's legacy in theatre history, discusses the influence of her theatre, examines the genre of diary-keeping, and spotlights Malina's work as an artist, activist, and diarist.

Book excerpt: Over thirty years after its publication, Fort Apache: New York's Most Violent Precinct remains the definitive account of the vicious cycle of violence that has gripped urban America over the past century. A swollen head floating down the Bronx River, a junke murdered for stealing a woman's wig, a French Connection-style chase through blind alleys. Police barricaded inside their precinct as a wild mob lays siege to the station--and, above all, mindless violence that seemed to erupt in profusion for no apparent reason against the cops who faithfully served and cared deeply about the neighborhood that was rapidly imploding.
