Like the surrealists to which he is indebted, his writing aims to evoke and is concerned with themes of irrational and altered states of consciousness such as paranoia, panic, and pareidolia. To this end, he often uses experimental techniques in the creation of his works such as automatic writing and generative methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From MeganOCOs Law to JessicaOCOs Law, almost every state in the nation has passed some law to punish sex offenders. This popular tough-on-crime legislation is often written after highly-publicized cases have made the gruesome rounds through the media, and usually features harsh sentences, lifetime GPS monitoring, a dramatic expansion of the civil commitment procedures, and severe restrictions on where released sex offenders may live. In Sex Fiends, Perverts, and Pedophiles, Chrysanthi Leon argues that, while the singular notion of the sexual boogeyman has been used to justify these harsh policies, not all sex offenders are the same and such OCyone size fits allOCO policies can unfairly punish other offenders of lesser crimes, needlessly targeting, sometimes ostracizing, citizens from their own communities. While many recognize that prison is not the right tool for every crime problem, Leon compellingly argues that the U.S. maintains a one-size-fits-all approach to sexual offending which is undermining public safety. Leon explains how weOCOve reached this pointOCowith a large incarcerated sex offender population, many of whom will be released in the coming years with multiple barriers to their success in the community, and without much expertise to guide them or to guide those who are charged to help them. Leon argues that we cannot blame the public, nor even the politicians, except indirectly. Instead, we might blame the institutions we charge with making placement decisions and with the expertsOCoboth those who have chosen to work in the field and those who have caused its marginalization. Ultimately, Leon shows that when policies intended for the worst offenders take over, all of us suffer."

This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imprisoned in the Tower of London after the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603, Sir Walter Ralegh spent seven years producing his massive History of the World. Created with the aid of a library of more than five hundred books that he was allowed to keep in his quarters, this incredible work of English vernacular would become a best seller, with nearly twenty editions, abridgments, and continuations issued in the years that followed. Nicholas Popper uses Ralegh’s History as a touchstone in this lively exploration of the culture of history writing and historical thinking in the late Renaissance. From Popper we learn why early modern Europeans ascribed heightened value to the study of the past and how scholars and statesmen began to see historical expertise as not just a foundation for political practice and theory, but as a means of advancing their power in the courts and councils of contemporary Europe. The rise of historical scholarship during this period encouraged the circulation of its methods to other disciplines, transforming Europe’s intellectual—and political—regimes. More than a mere study of Ralegh’s History of the World, Popper’s book reveals how the methods that historians devised to illuminate the past structured the dynamics of early modernity in Europe and England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last hundred years, in Africa and the United States, through a variety of religious encounters, some black African societies adopted – or perhaps rediscovered – a Judaic religious identity. African Zion grows out of a joined interest in these diversified encounters with Judaism, their common substrata and divergences, their exogenous or endogenous characteristics, the entry or re-entry of these people into the contemporary world as Jews and the necessity of reshaping the standard accounts of their collective experience. In various loci the bonds with Judaism of black Jews were often forged in the harshest circumstances and grew out of experiences of slavery, exile, colonial subjugation, political ethnic conflicts and apartheid. For the African peoples who identify as Jews and with other Jews, identification with biblical Israel assumes symbolical significance. This book presents the way in which the religious identification of African American Jews and African black Jews – “real”, ideal or imaginary – has been represented, conceptualized and reconfigured over the last century or so. These essays grow out of a concern to understand Black encounters with Judaism, Jews and putative Hebrew/Israelite origins and are intended to illuminate their developments in the medley of race, ethnicity, and religion of the African and African American religious experience. They reflect the geographical and historic mosaic of black Judaism, permeated as it is with different “meanings”, both contemporary and historical.

Living a comfortable life as the daughter of the world’s sole time travel magnate, Isabella has never suffered the irritation of being told no. Until now. In a bitter act of revenge, Isabella’s planned trip to the 20th century is sabotaged, propelling her into Saxon-era Britain. Captured, brutalized, and facing worse than death, reality crashes down on her, and Isabella Jaramillo—the social queen of Miami—finds herself a slave. Taken as property, Isabella makes some surprising allies and discovers the truth behind her father’s rise to power and the terrible price the entire world paid for it. Can Isabella break free and find a way home, not only to save herself, but to restore history to its rightful direction?

Book excerpt: In 1975, Dr. Richard Charles Haefner had it all--a Ph.D. from Penn State University, a prestigious job offer with UCLA and a thriving family business. Then it all came crashing down. Two boys who worked for Haefner accused him of sexual molestation, but allegations of police brutality, prosecutorial misconduct, bribery and corruption soon overshadowed what seemed like an "open-and-shut-case," ultimately resulting in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's amending state law. Drawing on interviews and recently discovered documents, the author revisits the case and explores a number of open questions--including whether Haefner was set up by police as he claimed.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to able to control time? Not by using a time machine… The actual manipulation of temporal flow by sheer mind power… Brian Fox knows all about this topic. He is a timejockey, one of a small number of people blessed, or maybe cursed, with this ability. Cursed because his children and then his wife are hijacked in time, timejacked, by terrifying individuals who wish Fox to use his temporal capabilities to perform a little task for them—a task that could possibly mean the end of the Universe! Blessed because only by the use of these capabilities can he save the ones he loves and, incidentally, the Universe. The TimeJack storyline spans from the twentieth to the twenty-seventh century and, if not quite across the Galaxy, at least along most of our spiral arm. Along the way, various strange and interesting characters are encountered, from the amazingly cute and pixiesque M’phtl to the appalling Lardhead, by way of Jenny Carter, down to earth English rose and nanny to the Fox household. The action includes hand to hand combat, use of puns, sword fights, gun fights and even a space battle.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Modernist Studies Assocation Book Prize Statue-fondlers, wanderlusters, sex magicians, and nymphomaniacs: the story of these forgotten sexualities—what Michel Foucault deemed “minor perverts”—has never before been told. In The Book of Minor Perverts, Benjamin Kahan sets out to chart the proliferation of sexual classification that arose with the advent of nineteenth-century sexology. The book narrates the shift from Foucault’s “thousand aberrant sexualities” to one: homosexuality. The focus here is less on the effects of queer identity and more on the lines of causation behind a surprising array of minor perverts who refuse to fit neatly into our familiar sexual frameworks. The result stands at the intersection of history, queer studies, and the medical humanities to offer us a new way of feeling our way into the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you heard of Dead Humanity theory? It says that humanity died on 21 December, 2012, exactly as predicted by the Mayans. This might come as a big surprise to you given that you no doubt believe you are very much alive. But are you? Haven't you noticed that things have been getting seriously weird in the last few years? Things don't seem to be, er, as real as they used to be. We seem to be in some fantasy world, getting more bizarre by the second. People are behaving extremely oddly. Have we all actually become ghosts and just didn't realize we actually died? Dead Humanity theory says that 21 December, 2012 was actually when we were uploaded overnight into a technological Singularity and became part of an amazing simulation, a true Matrix. Our bodies became avatars, so realistic we couldn't tell the difference (or we were programmed not to see any difference). We were given a new "reality principle" which was to accept the simulation as reality and to believe we had always been in this reality, when in fact we only entered it a few years ago. Our memories were adjusted by the Readjustment Bureau to make everything seem "normal". In the years leading up to the Death of Humanity, many people were subjected to various test experiments to prove the concept. They had their consciousness uploaded to the Singularity, then back again. Since they experienced different things in the Simulation, they ended up with conflicting memories. This all became known as the Mandela effect. Some people in the simulation realized that things had changed dramatically and they came up with the Dead Internet theory, which said that the Internet wasn't the same as it used to be. It had actually died and been replaced by an Internet controlled by AI, algorithms and bots. Most content on the Internet was bot-generated. Most social media updates were by bots. We were responding to a bot-created world that had less and less need for humans. These people hadn't got quite the right theory. It wasn't the Internet that had died, it was humanity! However, these people had powerfully intuited that something phenomenally strange was going on. They just hadn't realized how strange. As Sir Arthur Eddington said, "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine." When in doubt, consult the Bible. It has all the answers, God's answers. What people have failed to realize is that the Bible itself predicts the Mandela effect.

Book excerpt: An entertaining collection of the most audacious and underhanded deceptions in the history of mankind, from sacred relics to financial schemes to fake art, music, and identities. World history is littered with tall tales and those who have fallen for them. Ian Tattersall, a curator emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History, has teamed up with Peter Névraumont to tell this anti-history of the world, in which Michelangelo fakes a masterpiece; Arctic explorers seek an entrance into a hollow Earth; a Shakespeare tragedy is "rediscovered"; a financial scheme inspires Charles Ponzi; a spirit photographer snaps Abraham Lincoln's ghost; people can survive ingesting only air and sunshine; Edgar Allen Poe is the forefather of fake news; and the first human was not only British but played cricket. Told chronologically, HOAX begins with the first documented announcement of the end of the world in 2800 BC and winds its way through controversial tales such as the Loch Ness Monster and the Shroud of Turin, past proven fakes such as the Thomas Jefferson's ancient wine and the Davenport Tablets built by a lost race, and explores bald-faced lies in the worlds of art, science, literature, journalism, and finance.

Book excerpt: This collection of fresh essays addresses a broad range of topics in the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who, both old (1963-1989) and new (2005-present). The book begins with the fan: There are essays on how the show is viewed and identified with, fan interactions with each other, reactions to changes, the wilderness years when it wasn't in production. Essays then look at the ways in which the stories are told (e.g., their timeliness, their use of time travel as a device, etc.). After discussing the stories and devices and themes, the essays turn to looking at the Doctor's female companions and how they evolve, are used, and changed by their journey with the Doctor.
