Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Forest Timber Supply and Stumpage Markets in the Western United States In the Western United States, National Forests provide nearly 36 percent of total soft wood timber harvest. Because of this significant supply, the auction process through which the rights to harvest National Forest timber are transferred to private firms has received extensive study in the economics and forestry literature. In the context of regional timber supply, however, the timber sale is only the first of several steps in the movement of National Forest timber from woods to mill. A comprehensive under standing of the functioning of regional timber markets and the role of National Forests in a region's timber supply requires some explanation of the disposition of the sold timber, the rates at which the timber is harvested, and the interaction between National Forest and other ownerships resulting from harvest decisions. These post sale elements of National Forest supply have received only limited attention in past research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply Question of the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America When, a few years ago, it was rumored that the coal fields of Great Britain would not supply the then rate of consumption for more than two or three generations, a general alarm at the prospect of so terrible a calamity, so soon to fall on the nation, immediately manifested itself. It became the question of the day, the Press was full of it, had daily leaders on it, and it was made a subject of Parliamentary inquiry, and, until it was satisfactorily ascertained, by practical exploration and surveys, that there was coal enough in the country for many centuries, the question was the one absorbing topic of conversation and discussion amongst all classes in the British Isles. Although limited primarily to timber, the report recognizes that these lands must also provide recreation, water, wildlife, and other similar products for the American people. Achieving a balance bet een rapidly rising demands for timber and these other goods and services is a challenge for American forestry that must be met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Resources for America's Future The report of the Timber Resource Review is in the nature of a State-of - the-union message by the Forest Service on our national timber supplies. This comprehensive appraisal of the timber situation in the United States was started early in 1952. About a year and a half was devoted to planning the project; a year to field surveys and collection of data; a year to compila tion, interpretation, and preparation of the pre liminary report; and another year and a half to review and revision of the preliminary report and preparation of this final report. The Timber Resource Review is the latest in a series of overall timber appraisals in which the Forest Service has shared. The most recent one prior to this study was in 1945. One of the unique features of the present undertaking is that it was planned and executed in the field with the wide spread collaboration of a great number of States, forest industries, and individuals. Although this has engendered some delays, they have been more than offset by better planning, by more intensive surveys than the Forest Service could have under taken by itself, and it is hoped by more widespread understanding and acceptance of the findings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Georgia's forests was completed in 1936. During this period annual production of lumber in Georgia more than doubled. Pulp wood production jumped from cords in 1937 to million cords in 1954. Georgia now produces more pulpwood and lumber than any other State in the South. Since 1936, over 16 million acres of forest land have been put under organized fire protection. Pine trees have been planted on more than one-half million acres. About 8 million acres of forest land have been put under management. During the 19 years that the Naval Stores Conservation Program has been in operation, turpentining practices have steadily improved. To get an accurate measure of the impact of these events on Geor gia's timber supply, a second inventory of the State's forests was begun in July 1950. In November 1953 the last of ground survey plots was taken. The findings of this second survey furnish the back ground for an understanding of the present forest conditions in Georgia and focus attention upon the principal forest problems and what needs to be done to solve them. No attempt is made to fully evaluate the use of forests for wildlife, recreation, or grazing; these uses are dis cussed only as they affect the timber supply. Other losses such as the killing of seedlings, destruction of seed source, reduction in growth, and introduction of rot produce a much greater impact upon the future timber supply than mortality. The total annual loss resulting from both mortality and growth loss adds up to 537 million board-feet of pine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Lumber Industry of America, Vol. 2 The first volume of this work was devoted to certain general subjects and to eastern Canada; this volume takes up the history of, the lumber industry of the United States in detail. An appropriate beginning is found in connection with white pine. It is possible that the first trees cut on American soil by white men were yellow pine; and during certain periods the southern wood, perhaps, contributed more largely to the export trade of the colonies and of the United States than did white pine; but the latter was earlier the basis for an industry of magnitude, and, until the close of the Nineteenth Century, furnished more than any other one species, or more than any group of related species, to the internal commerce of the country. While the southern pines were and are famous in the export trade, they supplied at home, until within a generation, hardly more than a local requirement; whereas white pine was in demand almost everywhere throughout the continent and sold in large quantities, not only in the states in which it grew but even in states which were abundantly supplied with pines of their own growth, and, furthermore, it furnished the chief building and finishing material necessary in the development of the great prairie regions west of the Mississippi River. It was the white pine that of all the timber resources of the North American continent first attracted the attention of explorers, and it was the white pine that was first the subject of Royal or legislative enactment. This volume of the History of the Lumber Industry of America is, therefore, devoted very largely to the history of the white pine industry. This history is appropriately considered in its geographical relationships, and, for the sake of convenience, a beginning is made with the white pine State farthest east - a Commonwealth known for generations as the Pine Tree State, although for more than a half century pine has been second to spruce in volume of product. Beginning with Maine, the other New Eng land states appropriately come after and then the white pine belt rs followed across New York and Pennsylvania. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Pines of the Southern United States: Together With a Discussion of the Structure of Their Wood In ignorance of the nature and without appreciation of the economic value of their resources, pioneers squander and destroy without regard to the future the riches they find. We have done so in the United States and are continuing to do so although the pioneering stage should have been passed, especially with our forest resources. We have exploited them as if they were mines, instead of crops which can be harvested and reproduced continuously, and we have done so in a most wasteful manner; nay, we have by irrational methods of exploitation, no doubt due in part to the necessities of a rapidly developing country, in many cases destroyed the conditions for natural reproduction of the more valuable timber species. Fire and indiscriminate pasturing have also assisted in the process of deterioration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana's Timber Supply: An Inquiry Into Possible Futures Some analyses (green and others 1985) suggest the possibility of a bleak future. In recent years, industrial lands have contributed 30 to 40 percent of the total log supply while accounting for only about 17 percent of the inventory volume. A related question is: If industrial lands contribute less to the State's timber harvest, can harvests from National Forests or other ownerships offset the decline? Is a decreased level of total timber harvest inevitable? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lumber Trade of the United States: With Special Reference to the Pacific Coast The drain uponthatimber land has been going on for years in many sections of the country. The first settlers in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts early began to cut the forests for export purposes, and a very extensive trade with Europe in ship material was developed. Many of the states are practically barren, as far as the production of timber is concerned, and now receive nearly all they consume from western or southern states. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Resources of Idaho Another recent study (3) suggests (a) that it may be impossible to meet the Nation's po tential demands for wood without drawing heavily on Mountain States timber, (b) that the shifting timber supply situation between regions is steadily improving the competitive position of Mountain States timber, and (c) that the population increase in the Mountain States (which has been proportionately large in comparison with that of other regions in re cent years and promises to continue so) should provide greatly expanded local markets for timber products. These trends have special significance for Idaho, inasmuch as its output of timber prod ucts is the greatest of any of the Mountain States. It is therefore appropriate to take a detailed look at Idaho's timber resources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
