Book Synopsis Italian Ceramics by : Catherine Hess
Download or read book Italian Ceramics written by Catherine Hess and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984 the Getty Museum acquired an exceptional collection of Italian Renaissance maiolica, or tin-glazed earthenware. These often brilliantly colored objects range from an early Florentine jar with relief-blue decoration to a much later Mannerist dish with grotesque ornament. The collection was the subject of Italian Maiolica, a beautifully illustrated catalogue that the Museum published in 1988. Italian Ceramics amplifies and updates the earlier volume, including objects—some of them porcelain and terracotta—acquired during the intervening years. Among them are a pair of eighteenth-century candlesticks representing mythological scenes and a tabletop with hunting scenes; and, from the 1790s, the beautifully modeled and painted Saint Joseph with the Christ Child. Italian Ceramics contains the most recent scientific, historical, and iconographic information about the Museum’s holdings. Completely revised and expanded, this book offers a wealth of new information about the Getty Museum’s superb collection, which spans more than four centuries of Italian ceramic art.
Book Synopsis Ceramics and Globalization by : Neil Ewins
Download or read book Ceramics and Globalization written by Neil Ewins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Ewins' study of the Staffordshire potteries in a period of great global change traces how ceramics production has been affected by globalisation in both familiar and unexpected ways. Although many manufacturers such as Wedgwood initially moved production to cheaper labour markets in East Asia, others remained in or returned to England once it became clear that outsourcing manufacturing was affecting the brand value and customer perception of their products. Neil Ewins explores the complex behaviour of the UK ceramics industry, using a combination of evidence from the press, trade journals, ceramic objects, and primary interview evidence of manufacturers, retailers and a ceramic designer. Ewins suggests that, although the surface designs of UK ceramics invariably reflect diverse cultural and stylistic influences, a notion of authenticity often still resides in the place and context in which the ceramic product was originally made. Overall, the book argues that UK ceramics remain culturally complex because of issues of supply and demand, and ties to heritage, imagined or otherwise. Within a context of globalization, the book highlights compelling issues which have huge ramifications on UK manufacturing futures.

Book Synopsis Pirotechnia by : Vannoccio Biringuccio
Download or read book Pirotechnia written by Vannoccio Biringuccio and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1966-03-15 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally printed in 1540, this classic work on the field of metallurgy marked the beginning of a true technological literature. Biringuccio's Pirotechnia is the earliest printed work to cover the whole field of metallurgy. Originally printed in Venice in 1540, this was the first book to deal with the applied metal arts and processes of ore reduction and to describe the techniques which had been in development since the bronze age. Written by a master craftsman in a time when knowledge was kept alive by the spoken rather than the written word, this classic marked the beginning of a true technological literature, with both craftsmanship and science united by a writer's pen to form a record of an important facet of man's achievement as a stimulus to further advance. After the publication of the Pirotechnia, many followed Biringuccio's example, and as a result of this growing literature of technological practice and experimental fact, science eventually became the concern of the educated man.

Download or read book The Enlightened Eye written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poets, painters, philosophers, and scientists alike debated new ways of thinking about visual culture in the “long eighteenth century”. The essays in The Enlightened Eye: Goethe and Visual Culture demonstrate the extent to which Goethe advanced this discourse in virtually all disciplines. The concept of visuality becomes a constitutive moment in a productive relationship between the verbal and visual arts with far-reaching implications for the formation of bourgeois identity, pedagogy, and culture. From a variety of theoretical perspectives, the contributors to this volume examine the interconnections between aesthetic and scientific fields of inquiry involved in Goethe’s visual identity. By locating Goethe’s position in the examination of visual culture, both established and emerging scholars analyze the degree to which visual aesthetics determined the cultural production of both the German-speaking world and the broader European context. The contributions analyze the production, presentation, and consumption of visual culture defined broadly as painting, sculpture, theater, and scientific practice. The Enlightened Eye promises to invest new energy and insight into the discussion among literary scholars, art historians, and cultural theorists about many aspects of visual culture in the Age of Goethe.

Book Synopsis The Portrait in the Renaissance by : John Pope-Hennessy
Download or read book The Portrait in the Renaissance written by John Pope-Hennessy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major account of Renaissance portraiture by one of the twentieth century’s most eminent art historians In this book, John Pope-Hennessy provides an unprecedented look at two centuries of experiment in portraiture during the Renaissance. Pope-Hennessy shows how the Renaissance cult of individuality brought with it a demand that the features of the individual be perpetuated, a concept first manifested in the portraits that fill the great Florentine fresco cycles and led, later in the fifteenth century, to the creation of the independent portrait by such artists as Sandro Botticelli, Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Giovanni Bellini, and Antonello da Messina. Pope-Hennessy goes on to describe the process by which Titian and the great artists of the High Renaissance transformed the portrait from a record of appearance into an analysis of character.
