The rise of asymmetric warfare and a variety of other unconventional threats has meant that states are now at risk from a range of new threats. This thesis studies the threats faced by the state of Israel in the post Cold War er a. Using secondary sources, mainly Israeli in origin, the thesis covered the follow ing topics; 1) Iranian nuclearization and Iran's efforts to improve her ballisti c missile arsenal, 2) the impact of domestic and international terrorism on Isra eli security and, 3) the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. A short section on the military balance in the Middle East following the end of t he Cold War was included. Israel was found to be secure in the face of conventional attack; however, the s tate was challenged in a number of ways by unconventional threats. Iran was foun d to pose a serious threat to Israel as a result of her stockpiles of ballistic missiles, her ongoing efforts to improve her ballistic missile capacity and as a result of Iranian attempts to gain nuclear power. With regard to terrorism, Isr ael faces a psychological threat rather than a serious challenge to the security of the state. Organisations such as Hamas and Hizballah pose little threat to t he security of the state, but have dominated the Israeli security agenda in the past. The one group that was thought to pose a clear threat to the state was Al- Qaida, primarily as a result of their attempts to acquire Weapons of Mass Destru ction. Israel's biggest challenge was found to lie within their dealings with th e Palestinians. The building of the security wall was thought to herald a new wa ve of violence in the near future.

For over five decades, the Cold War security agenda was distinguished by the principal strategic balance, that of a structure of bipolarity, between the United States (US) and the Soviet Union (USSR). This book seeks to draw from current developments in critical security studies in order to establish a new framework of inquiry for security in the Middle East. It addresses the need to redefine security in the Middle East. The focus is squarely on the Arab-Israeli context in general, and the Palestinian-Israeli context in particular. The character of Arab-Israeli relations are measured by the Israeli foreign policy debate from the 1950s to the 1990s. A dialogue between Islam and Islamism as a means to broaden the terrain on which conflict resolution and post-bipolar security in the Middle East is to be understood is presented. The Middle East peace process (MEPP) was an additional factor in problematizing the military-strategic concept of security in the Middle East. The shift in analysis from national security to human security reflects the transformations of the post-Cold War era by combining military with non-military concerns such as environmental damage, social unrest, economic mismanagement, cultural conflict, gender inequity and radical fundamentalism. By way of contrast to realist international relations (IR) theory, developing-world theorists have proposed a different set of variables to explain the unique challenges facing developing states. Finally, the book examines the significance of ecopolitics in security agendas in the Middle East.

During that period, deterrence strategy was aimed mainly at preventing aggression against the United States and its close allies by the hostile Communist power centers--the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and its allies, Communist China and North Korea. In particular, the strategy was devised to prevent aggression involving nuclear attack by the USSR or China. Since the end of the Cold War, the risk of war among the major powers has subsided to the lowest point in modern history. Still, the changing nature of the threats to American and allied security interests has stimulated a considerable broadening of the deterrence concept. Post-Cold War Conflict Deterrence examines the meaning of deterrence in this new environment and identifies key elements of a post-Cold War deterrence strategy and the critical issues in devising such a strategy. It further examines the significance of these findings for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Quantitative and qualitative measures to support judgments about the potential success or failure of deterrence are identified. Such measures will bear on the suitability of the naval forces to meet the deterrence objectives. The capabilities of U.S. naval forces that especially bear on the deterrence objectives also are examined. Finally, the book examines the utility of models, games, and simulations as decision aids in improving the naval forces' understanding of situations in which deterrence must be used and in improving the potential success of deterrence actions.
