Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoughts of John Ruskin No apology need be offered by the editor for presenting to the public another volume of selec tions from the Works of John Ruskin. Those heretofore compiled have been generally addressed to the admirers of certain special forms of literary work. The Noble Thoughts have been selected at random throughout the whole works, wherever any concisely expressed idea of an elevated and practical character has hit the fancy of the editor. In the strenuous times in which we live, such compilations often become the companions of those who would not otherwise avail themselves of the gems of thought scattered through the vol umes, and in some cases, may serve as an intro duction to, and cause the reading of many of the works from which they are culled. The story of some simple life comes to us in the measure of an unequaled charm. To the mind are presented three objects - love, religion, and patriotism. Give them flesh, and we understand. Real men with real voices and real hearts make an earthly scene which is attractive. Philosophy can explain the song-bird; but explanation is not inspiration. The latter we must have. The bird in the overhanging bough moves us as it pours forth a throat filled with liquid song. But the theory of music is a bald conclusion. The history of flowers, rocks, and stars can never compete with the story of some great heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts of Beauty and Words of Wisdom: From the Writings of John Ruskin The chief purpose of a volume of selections is, that one mind may thus be made to do service for many. With an author voluminous as John Ruskin, this is especially needful, since otherwise some of his richest thoughts would remain hid den among sealed pages. For, while the company of thought lovers and seekers is vast, time comes to many of them so hedged in by the must be of life's work, their own re search cannot even fill a brief space amid the pleasures held sacred for recreation hours. These busy people are the ones to whom this Spare Min ute Series is cordially dedicated, and by wh m it is no less cordially welcomed. Among them may be those who will ask, Why, in this compilation, Notes on Art and kindred topics have been omitted? I reply, Simply, because they are the subjects I find most freely introduced in other volumes of selections from Ruskin's writings. Hence I have confined myself to his discourses on Nature, Morals, and Religion; gathering for your perusal revelations of the blessed wonders of sky and cloud, mountain and rock, trees, mosses, and the green grass, birds of the air, and flowers, and the marvelous coloring all these display, which in beauty of hue, and deli cacy of tinting as far out-pass the works of man, as the Heavens are higher than the earth. From Nature, it is but a step to the realm where mind and soul reign as King and Queen. And here you will find not only jewels of mental value, and morals of beauty and truth, but buds and blossoms too, of uplifting aspirations and sweet tender heart charity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of John Ruskin: Its Influence Upon Modern Thought and Life And as regards the critical review of the works Of great men in which an at tempt is made at assigning to each work its position in the general series of similar efiorts, of throwing light upon the origin and surrounding causes of its existence and its form, and finally of pointing out what is good and what is bad, what is ephemeral and what is lasting, what ought to be confirmed and prolonged in its ex istence or refuted and hastened to its descent into oblivion - in one word, the sifting of the literary wheat from the chafi' - the utility Of even this function of liter ary criticism may be questioned. The good and true have in themselves the power of vitality and persistency; whilethe negative character in the bad and the untrue is the weakness at the very heart of such work, and necessarily, from its own nature, leads to annihilation. It may thus be held that time and the general readzhg puélz'c are the surest and fairest judges. And it is further held that no one man in one given period of time can be an adequate substitute for the judgment of the reading public in the course of ages. However many instances may be adduced in support Of this doubt, careful consideration will not confirm it in its absolute form. When we come to con sider what is meant by time and the general reading public, instances abound in which the verdict referred to them cannot be recognized as unquestionably just. Time is a very elastic term; and merit has been known to sleep unac knowledged for centuries, until at last it was brought into recognition by the trum pet of quickening truth and justice. We cannot help realizing that centuries are a very long time; and it must make us shudder in our conscience when we face the possibility that there are many worksand men whose merits at the present lie thus unrecognized, and may be so for ever.* And when we inquire how the trumpet thus awakened them from sleep, we find that it was sounded by one man. In the reading public there is neither. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Perhaps that is what Shaw meant when he said that few men have embodied our manifold nature more markedly than Ruskin. Endowed with a great mind yet re taining the emotions of a child, noble and narrow, dog matic and yielding, immoderate both in delight and despair, arrogant and gentle, self-obsessed and self-sacrificing, com pulsively communicative yet solitary, prophetic and blind, Ruskin was always changing and always himself. Even his contradictions have a certain consistency. At different stages of life he reacted differently to the same things; yet each re sponse was absolute in its integrity, reflecting a unity of sensibility rather than of system. Throughout his career his mind was capable of change, and hence of growth; but the change, as he once remarked, was that of a tree, not of' a cloud. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Ruskin, Vol. 2 These considerations, together with typographical convenience, have governed the arrangement of the present volume. Its contents may roughly be placed under two heads: (a) pieces which were published on their merits at the beginning of Ruskin's literary career; (6) pieces which were published after he had become famous in other fields of literature, on account of the interest re ected upon them by those achievements. This division corresponds with the circumstances under which the several pieces were originally published. The volume consists of 'three parts and an appendix. Part I. Is a reprint of the Poems collected in 1850, with Ruskin's sanction, by his father from the various periodicals, etc., in which they had originally appeared. Part II. Consists of a few Verses of Later Years. Part III. Consists of the juvenilia. These were first printed in 1891, with his general consent, but at the discretion and on the selection of the editor to whom the task was entrusted. In an appendix, Ruskin's edition of Dame Wiggins of Lee (1885) is reprinted, together with some other nursery rhymes which were published in the Poems, 1891. It will thus be seen that a reader desiring to study Ruskin's verses only from the biographical point of view should first read Part III., and then return to Parts I. And II. The early verses are Often of great interest, and in some ways of greater interest than many of the later pieces. But for reasons already stated, this volume gives precedence to the more mature poems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Works of John Ruskin IN making the following selections, I have tried to avoid the appearance of such a volume as used to be entitled Elegant Extracts. Wherever practicable, entire chapters or lectures are given, or at least passages of sufficient length to insure a correct notion Of the general complexion of Rus kin's work. The text is in all cases that of the first editions, unless these were later revised by Ruskin himself. The original spelling and punctuation are preserved. But a few minor changes have been made for the sake of uniformity among the various extracts. For similar reasons, Ruskin's numbering of paragraphs is dispensed with. I have aimed not to multiply notes. Practically all Rus kin's own annotation is given, with the exception of one or two very long and somewhat irrelevant notes from Stones of Venice. It has not been deemed necessary to give the dates of every painter or to explain every geographical refer ence. On the other hand, the sources of most of the quota tions are indicated. In the preparation of these notes, the magnificent library edition of Messrs. Cook and Wedder burn has inevitably been of considerable assistance; but all their references have been verified, many errors have been corrected, and much has of course been added. In closing I wish to express my obligation to my former colleague, Dr. Lucius H. Holt, without whose assistance this volume would never have appeared. He wrote a num ber of the notes, including the short prefaces to the various selections, and prepared the manuscript for the printer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of John Ruskin, Vol. 39 With such material in han d, the first question which the editors had to decide concerned the form in which Index references were to be given. They would have been saved a great deal of trouble if the old references (to chapters and numbered sections) had been retained, but this plan would have been inconvenient in the present edition, which contains so much new matter. The plan of giving a double system of references (so that the Index might in a measure have been available for the previous editions of Ruskin) was upon reflection rejected. Considerations of space were decisive against it. Moreover, this Library Edition is intended to be, and is likely always to be, the Reference Ruskin, and as such may be expected to find a place in most per manent libraries, private and public, in this and other countries. The preliminary preparation of index-slips for the hitherto unprinted matter, as well as for the notes and introductions, was the work of Miss Slaughter. Much re-arrangement has, of course, been necessary, and it has often been convenient to combine several references under a new heading. The index, as finally presented, is the work of the two editors; Mr. Wedderburn having done the letter a (except Art and Artists), the Bible, and the letters d, h, i, j, k, n, 0, q, u, o, to (with some exceptions), a', y and z, and Mr. Cook, the rest; and the whole work having then been subjected to a joint revision.
