Starting in the 1600s, my ancestors came from Europe and helped settle and build the country, fought in the battles that defined the nation, lost their jobs in the Great Depression, and then enjoyed the prosperity of 20th century America. Along the way was a soldier who fought with George Washington in Braddock's Expedition, a veteran of Bunker Hill who may have heard the famed command "don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes," a father and son who served on opposing sides during the Civil War, and the engineer who kept the Washington Monument running in it's early days. This book, a family history of my parents and their ancestors, tells their stories and presents the lineage of my family.

Book excerpt: Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their inherent abilities. SAYRE FAMILY another 100-years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Onio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century, The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " An essential resource for scholars, students, and all lovers of the Mountaineer State. From bloody skirmishes with Indians on the early frontier to the Logan County mine war, the story of West Virginia is punctuated with episodes as colorful and rugged as the mountains that dominate its landscape. In this first modern comprehensive history, Otis Rice and Stephen Brown balance these episodes of mountaineer individualism against the complexities of industrial development and the growth of social institutions, analyzing the events and personalities that have shaped the state. To create this history, the authors weave together many strands from the past and present. Included among these are geological and geographical features; the prehistoric inhabitants; exploration and settlement; relations with the Indians; the land systems and patterns of ownership; the Civil War and the formation of the state from the western counties of Virginia; the legacy of Reconstruction; politics and government; industrial development; labor problems and advances; and cultural aspects such as folkways, education, religion, and national and ethnic influences. For this second edition, the authors have added a new chapter, bringing the original material up to date and carrying the West Virginia story through the presidential election of 1992. Otis K. Rice is professor emeritus of history and Stephen W. Brown is professor of history at West Virginia Institute of Technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s, Allen Lewis Hoskins and his siblings left Leslie County, Kentucky, and moved to Mingo County, West Virginia. After Al met and married Lucy Patterson from Franklin County, Virginia, he never could have known that more than a hundred years later, members of his extended family would quietly wonder, Where do we really come from? And how did we get to where we live today? Rebecca Hoskins Goodwin relies on DNA, extensive research, photographs, and other personal documents to share the fascinating story of her family in the context of Appalachian history, as they progressed from immigrant to settler to farmer and from mining to law enforcement to politics. As Goodwin sets her familys lives against the backdrop of their times, it soon becomes evident that despite hardship, violence, and war, generations of the Hoskins family have relied on the strong ties of kinship to push on toward the frontier and, ultimately, the American Dream. Did You Tell Them Who You Are? offers a compelling look back into the Hoskins family history in an effort to answer questions for not only todays generation, but also generations to come. If you are a student of Appalachian history, you will be intrigued by how historical events affected one family. If you are looking for a pleasant read that will entertain and inform you, I recommend Did You Tell Them Who You Are? Book excerpt: Award-winning psychologist and educator Thomas Lickona offers more than one hundred practical strategies that parents and schools have used to help kids build strong personal character as the foundation for a purposeful, productive, and fulfilling life. Succeeding in life takes character, and Lickona shows how irresponsible and destructive behavior can invariably be traced to the absence of good character and its ten essential qualities: wisdom, justice, fortitude, self-control, love, a positive attitude, hard work, integrity, gratitude, and humility. The culmination of a lifetime’s work in character education from one the preeminent psychologists of our time, this landmark book gives us the tools we need to raise respectful and responsible children, create safe and effective schools, and build the caring and decent society in which we all want to live.
