Book Synopsis Australian Soldiers in South Africa and Vietnam by : Effie Karageorgos
Download or read book Australian Soldiers in South Africa and Vietnam written by Effie Karageorgos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African and Vietnam Wars provoked dramatically different reactions in Australians, from pro-British jingoism on the eve of Federation, to the anti-war protest movements of the 1960s. In contrast, the letters and diaries of Australian soldiers written while on the South African and Vietnam battlefields reveal that their reactions to the war they were fighting were surprisingly unlike those on the home fronts from which they came. Australian Soldiers in South Africa and Vietnam follows these combat men from enlistment to the war front and analyses their words alongside theories of soldiering to demonstrate the transformation of soldiers as a response to developments in military procedure, as well as changing civilian opinion. In this way, the book illustrates the strength of a soldier's link to their home front lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid 1980's, having endured ten years of civil war, Lebanon found itself in the midst of a struggle for power and domination by the myriad of militia groups born during the chaos and instability of the time. Desperation for international recognition and for political leverage led several of the Iranian-backed militias to seize American and other Western hostages. Prisoners of Circumstance is a novel set in the turmoil of this period. It reflects on the kidnapping of men whose only crime was the accident of birth. It deals with the interaction of the hostages with their captors and the initiatives of their wives to focus international attention on their plight, and finally, on a CIA-led effort to forcibly secure their release. Assigned newly to the Embassy in Beirut as the CIA station chief, George Kowalski's task became to plan, sell, and execute a daring rescue of the hostages. Drawing from the elite units of all branches of the military, a dream team' is assembled to launch the rescue mission; a mission which was fraught with surprising and unexpected twists. The characters in the book are fictitious, but the historical and geographical references are accurate. Through dialogue between the characters, the author describes the motivations behind the actions of the various parties involved in the Middle East conflict; a conflict that has persisted for over fifty years and has defied resolution to this day.

Book Synopsis Struggling for Self Reliance by : Bob Breen
Download or read book Struggling for Self Reliance written by Bob Breen and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military force projection is the self-reliant capacity to strike from mainland ports, bases and airfields to protect Australia's sovereignty as well as more distant national interests. Force projection is not just a flex of military muscle in times of emergency or the act of dispatching forces. It is a cycle of force preparation, command, deployment, protection, employment, sustainment, rotation, redeployment and reconstitution. If the Australian Defence Force consistently gets this cycle wrong, then there is something wrong with Australia's defence. This monograph is a force projection audit of four Australian regional force projections in the late 1980s and the 1990s -- valid measures of competence. It concludes that Australia is running out of luck and time. The Rudd Government has commissioned a new Defence White paper. This monograph is Exhibit A for change.

Download or read book Gallipoli Sniper written by John Hamilton and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is a well-researched, detailed and compelling story.' Defender Magazine Billy Sing was a small, dark man – and a deadly killer. When, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force 5th Light Horse, he was thrust onto the narrow strip of land held by the Australians on Gallipoli, he witnessed the terrible effects of the Turkish snipers and decided to fight fire with fire. Using a simple Lee Enfield .303 rifle, Sing began to pick off unwary Turks who exposed themselves. Assisted by a 'spotter' who would single out targets for him, Sing acquired an unrivalled reputation as he killed increasing numbers of enemy soldiers. He became known as the 'Anzac Angel of Death' and the 'Assassin of Gallipoli' and was considered to be the most successful sniper and most feared man in Gallipoli. The Turks, aware of his reputation decided to target the Sing with their own marksman. In a deadly duel, Sing fired first and killed 'Abdul the Terrible'. This a vivid account of the merciless nature of the fighting in the Gallipoli Campaign from an award-winning journalist and best-selling author.
