Colella's aggressive six-week, three-phase plan to help you overcome hunger pangs, diminish cravings, and help you achieve your goal weight—breaking free of the carbohydrate addiction that packed on those difficult-to-shed pounds. Dr. Colella begins by examining why we feel so hungry and introducing his "Appetite Scale," a measurement that shows which foods lead to weight-gain and cravings. He offers advice for avoiding inflammatory foods or mitigating their effects by pairing them with other foods lower on the Appetite Scale. He then sets you on a prescribed diet that increases satiety, curbs your carbohydrate intake, and launches you on a journey that is forever free from an excessive appetite—allowing continued weight loss without hitting a plateau or experiencing yo-yo weight gain and loss. Drawing on his unique understanding of diet and the thresholds that make losing weight increasingly difficult, Dr. Colella presents an aggressive plan for resetting your appetite, bringing your weight under control, and keeping you out of the body mass danger zone.

Download or read book Food, Diet and Obesity written by D Mela and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-10-14 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global obesity epidemic is arguably the most serious health issue facing the food industry today. Food manufacturers are under increasing pressure over both the degree to which they are seen as contributing to the problem, and the role they should play in solving it. Drawing on the expertise of many of the world's leading experts in this area, Food, diet and obesity summarises the key research on the links between obesity and diet. Topics discussed include trends in obesity, the evidence behind popular diets and meal replacers, the effectiveness of fat and sugar replacers in food, emerging issues such as the value of the glycemic index, protein content and calcium in weight control, and potential functional food targets and ingredients for weight control. After an introductory chapter on global trends in obesity, part one looks at the range of contributing factors to obesity, from nutrient-gene interactions, energy metabolism and physical activity to sensory responses to food, portion size and the psychology of overeating. Part two looks at macronutrients and their role in weight gain or loss, with chapters on topics such as energy density, dietary fat, carbohydrates, protein and dietary fibre. The final part of the book discusses issues in developing effective strategies for weight control, from gaining consumer acceptance of weight-control food products, through functional food ingredients, to community-based public health approaches in preventing obesity. With its distinguished editor and contributors, Food, diet and obesity is a standard work for health professionals, nutritionists and R&D staff throughout the food industry, as well as all those concerned with understanding and reducing obesity. - Summarises key research which links diet and obesity - Trends in obesity are examined - Contributory factors to obesity are investigated, including lifestyle and genetics
Book Synopsis Hormonal and Neuroendocrine Regulation of Energy Balance by : Maria Moreno
Download or read book Hormonal and Neuroendocrine Regulation of Energy Balance written by Maria Moreno and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-07-18 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alteration in adequate energy balance maintenance results in serious disturbances such as obesity and its related metabolic disorders. In Mammals, energy balance is homeostatically controlled through hormonal and neuroendocrine systems which cooperation is based on cross-talk between central and peripheral signals. The hypothalamus as well as peripheral hormones among which adipokines from adipose tissue and thyroid hormones play a crucial role in energy homeostasis. Unraveling the physiological, cellular and molecular mechanisms through which hormonal and neuroendocrine systems regulate energy balance has been a long-standing challenge in biology and is now more necessary when considering the world-wide increasing prevalence of obesity. Indeed, recognizing and understanding the biochemical and nutrient signaling pathways contributing to the nervous and endocrine integration of physiological mechanisms involved in the normal and/or abnormal regulation of energy balance is fundamental also to the development of new, effective, and targeted treatments for obesity. Recent studies have highlighted the role of hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin-expressing neurons in the regulation of energy homeostasis by controlling energy expenditure and food intake. This is accomplished through a precise balance of production and degradation of a-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, an anorexigenic neuropeptide which is degraded to an inactive form unable to inhibit food intake by the key enzyme prolyl carboxypeptidase (PRCP), thus suggesting that pharmacologic approaches targeting PRCP may provide a novel and effective option for the management of obesity and its associated metabolic disorders. Indeed, efforts have been made to generate potent, brain-penetrant PRCP inhibitors. Weight loss due to negative energy balance is a goal for obese subjects not always reachable by dietary caloric restriction or increased physical activity. Lipid-lowering therapies have been suggested to have potential benefits, however, the establishment of comprehensive therapeutic strategies is still awaited. Recently, it has been reported that thyroid hormone (TH)- derivatives such as 3,5-diiodothyronine and 3-iodothyronamine possess interesting biological activities, opening new perspectives in thyroid physiology and TH derivatives therapeutic usage. Moreover, several studies, focusing on the interaction between thyroid hormone (TH), the autonomic nervous system and the liver, revealed an important role for the hypothalamus in the differential effects of TH on autonomic outflow to peripheral organs controlling energy balance. This Research Topic aims to give a comprehensive and integrate view of the factors involved in the endocrine and neuroendocrine signaling in energy balance regulation to highlight their involvement into physiological processes and regulatory systems as well as their perturbation during pathological processes.
