Book excerpt: Praise for Business Valuation: An Integrated Theory, 2nd Edition "The Second Edition of Business Valuation: An Integrated Theory manages to present the theoretical analysis of valuation from the first edition and expand on that discussion by providing additional guidance on implementing the relevant valuation theories, notably in its expanded discussion of the Quantitative Marketability Discount Model." —Dr. David Tabak, NERA Economic Consulting Your Essential Valuations Reference Whether you are an accountant, auditor, financial planner, or attorney, Business Valuation: An Integrated Theory, 2nd Edition enables you to understand and correctly apply fundamental valuation concepts. Thoroughly revised and expanded, the Second Edition demystifies modern valuation theory, bringing together various valuation concepts to reveal a comprehensive picture of business valuation. With the implementation of new accounting pronouncements mandating the recognition of numerous assets and liabilities at fair value, it has become critical for CPAs charged with auditing financial statements to understand valuation concepts. With thoughtful and balanced treatment of both theory and application, this essential guide reveals: The "GRAPES of Value"-Growth, Risk and Reward, Alternative Investments, Present Value, Expectations, and Sanity The relationship between the Gordon Model and the discounted cash flow model of valuation The basis for commonly applied, but commonly misunderstood valuation premiums and discounts A practical perspective on the analysis of potential business acquisitions Grounded in the real world of market participants, Business Valuation, 2nd Edition addresses your need to understand business valuation, providing a means of articulating valuation concepts to help you negotiate value-enhancing transactions. If you want to get back to valuation basics, this useful reference will become your guide to defining the various levels of value and developing a better understanding of business appraisal reports.

Book excerpt: These are the revised notes of a course for graduate students and some seminar talks which I gave at the University of Rochester during Fall Term 1969/70. They would not have been written without the encouragement and the aid which I received, during all stages of the work, by friends from Rochester, Rio de Janeiro, and Bonn. I wish to thank all of them: Barbara Grabkowicz encouraged me to write these notes in English and read carefully parts of a preliminary manuscript, as did Gervasio G. Bastos, Yves A. E. Lequain, Walter Strubel, and Antonio J. Engler. Many valuable suggestions were given me by Yves A. E. Lequain, and several improvements of theorems and proofs are due to him. I am particularly grateful to Linda C. Hill for her criticism in reading the last version and for improving and smoothing many of my formulations. Last but not least I thank Wilson Goes for the excellent typing. Most of this book was elaborated when I stayed in Rio de Janeiro as a Visiting Professor at IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) and as a Pesquisador-Conferencista of CNPq (National Research Council). Thanks are also due to these institu tions.

Book excerpt: This monograph critically reviews and updates real estate valuation theory, which is based on neoclassical economics, in light of developments in heterodox economic theory. Building on a comprehensive historical account of the evolution of value theory, the book uses new institutional economics theory and critical realism as lenses through which problems in standard valuation theory and practice are expatiated, and as the foundation for an alternative theory. The new theory is employed to explain major problems in real estate valuation that are beyond the capability of the standard theory, such as price bubbles in real estate markets, anchoring bias, client influence and valuation under uncertain market conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absolute values and their completions – such as the p-adic number fields – play an important role in number theory. Krull's generalization of absolute values to valuations made possible applications in other branches of mathematics. In valuation theory, the notion of completion must be replaced by that of "Henselization". This book develops the theory of valuations as well as of Henselizations, based on the skills of a standard graduate course in algebra.

Book excerpt: Valuation lies at the heart of much of what we do in finance, whether it is the study of market efficiency and questions about corporate governance or the comparison of different investment decision rules in capital budgeting. In this paper, we consider the theory and evidence on valuation approaches. We begin by surveying the literature on discounted cash flow valuation models, ranging from the first mentions of the dividend discount model to value stocks to the use of excess return models in more recent years. In the second part of the paper, we examine relative valuation models and, in particular, the use of multiples and comparables in valuation and evaluate whether relative valuation models yield more or less precise estimates of value than discounted cash flow models. In the final part of the paper, we set the stage for further research in valuation by noting the estimation challenges we face as companies globalize and become exposed to risk in multiple countries.

Book excerpt: This book provides an applied theoretical approach to modern day business valuation. It combines elements from both finance and accounting to help practitioners identify the most suitable method for analysis, showing when and how methods can be applied in different contexts and under specific constraints. It describes how business valuation techniques can be applied to calculate value in case of transactions, litigation, IPOs, and the fair value under an IFRS framework. The purpose of this book is to offer a guideline for the application of an integrated approach, thereby avoiding "copy and paste" valuations, based on pre-packaged parameters and the uncritical use of models. Specifically, an Integrated Valuation Approach (IVA) should be adopted that encompasses, within any specific method, a wide range of elements reflecting the characteristics and specificities of the firm to be valued. The book is based on the International Valuation Standards issued by the International Valuation Standards Council. Valuation standards allow for an alignment of both the methods and their application, providing a common basis for valuers.

Book excerpt: The present volume is the second in the author's series of three dealing with abstract algebra. For an understanding of this volume a certain familiarity with the basic concepts treated in Volume I: groups, rings, fields, homomorphisms, is presup posed. However, we have tried to make this account of linear algebra independent of a detailed knowledge of our first volume. References to specific results are given occasionally but some of the fundamental concepts needed have been treated again. In short, it is hoped that this volume can be read with complete understanding by any student who is mathematically sufficiently mature and who has a familiarity with the standard notions of modern algebra. Our point of view in the present volume is basically the abstract conceptual one. However, from time to time we have deviated somewhat from this. Occasionally formal calculational methods yield sharper results. Moreover, the results of linear algebra are not an end in themselves but are essential tools for use in other branches of mathematics and its applications. It is therefore useful to have at hand methods which are constructive and which can be applied in numerical problems. These methods sometimes necessitate a somewhat lengthier discussion but we have felt that their presentation is justified on the grounds indicated. A stu dent well versed in abstract algebra will undoubtedly observe short cuts. Some of these have been indicated in footnotes. We have included a large number of exercises in the text.

As explained in the introduction, this represents a useful and important viewpoint in algebraic geometry, especially concerning the theory of algebraic curves and their function fields. The correspondences of this with other viewpoints (e.g. of geometrical or topological nature) are often indicated, also to provide motivations and intuition for many results. Links with arithmetic are also often indicated. There are three appendices, concerning Hilbert’s Nullstellensatz (for which several proofs are provided), Puiseux series and Dedekind domains. There are also several exercises, often accompanied by hints, which sometimes develop further results not included in full for brevity reasons.

"Williams combined original theoretical concepts with enlightening and entertaining commentary based on his own experiences in the rough-and-tumble world of investment." Williams' discovery was to project an estimate that offers intrinsic value and it is called the 'Dividend Discount Model' which is still used today by professional investors on the institutional side of markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is real property appraisal evolving, or have all of the "big ideas" already been conceived? This question has been circulating among the leaders of the Appraisal Institute during the past several annual meetings, usually encountering little in the way of satisfying answers. This is not too surprising, because grand ideas and new knowledge do not typically evolve from off-hand conversation. They are the product of focused intellectual activity and hours of difficult work. This unquenched thirst for new knowledge is the primary reason for assembling this collection of new manuscripts dealing with valuation theory, which was financially underwritten by the Appraisal Institute. Their generosity and willingness to partner with the American Real Estate Society made this collection of thoughtful and thought provoking essays possible. They are the result of a global response to a worldwide call for papers, and demonstrate that real estate valuation is indeed an international discipline. The United States, Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Rim, and Europe are all represented by this impressive collection of authors. Together, the eighteen essays that make up this volume demonstrate that there are a sufficient number of "big ideas" to challenge and improve the appraisal profession for years to come. Real Estate Valuation Theory is organized around five categories of intellectual contribution to the whole-appraiser decision making and valuation accuracy, application of nontraditional appraisal techniques such as regression and the minimum-variance grid method, appraising contaminated property, ad valorem tax assessment, and new perspectives on traditional appraisal methods. One common thread is that all of the papers are exceptionally well written and thought provoking.
