Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Division II: Aerodynamics, Volume 7: Wing Theory in Supersonic Flow examines the cases of isolated simple wings, wings with vertical plane tail, cruciform wings, and simple or cruciform wings fitted with a body. This book presents the method for the actual calculation of isolated wings or of more complex system. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the basic equations in the mechanics of inviscid fluids. This text then presents a unified theory that is established for angularly shaped wings in supersonic flow. Other chapters consider the method for calculating the characteristics of drag, lift, and moments for various shapes of the trailing edge line. This book discusses as well the wings of ordinary shapes, delta wings, yawed wings, polygonal wings, trapezoid wings, and arrow-head or swept-back wings. The final chapter deals with a delta wing with a central fusiform body. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, students, and specialists engaged in modern aerodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originator of many of the theories used in modern wing design, Robert T. Jones surveys the aerodynamics of wings from the early theories of lift to modern theoretical developments. This work covers the behavior of wings at both low and high speeds, including the range from very low Reynolds numbers to the determination of minimum drag at supersonic speed. Emphasizing analytical techniques, Wing Theory provides invaluable physical principles and insights for advanced students, professors, and aeronautical engineers, as well as for scientists involved in computational approaches to the subject. This book is based on over forty years of theoretical and practical work performed by the author and other leading researchers in the field of aerodynamics. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple technique is presented for correcting the results of thin-wing theory near round or sharp edges at which the normal component of free-stream velocity is subsonic. The flow in planes normal to such edges is actually brought to rest, but thin-wing theory instead predicts infinite velocities. Furthermore, corresponding to the circulatory flow around leading edges, thin-wing theory predicts additional singularities that do not actually exist for round edges and exceed their true strength for sharp edges. All these singularities grow worse if one formally attempts to improve the solution by iteration. To correct these defects, the formal thin-wing solution is here rendered uniformly valid by comparing with exact solutions for simple profiles having the same nose shape. In this way Lighthill's rule for correcting the surface speed on round-nosed airfoils in incompressible flow is extended to higher approximations, to compressible flow, to three-dimensional wings, and to sharp edges. Corresponding results for slender bodies of revolution are considered briefly; in particular, the rules for round-nosed airfoils in incompressble flow are shown to apply also to round-nosed bodies of revolution.

He provides the readers with a comprehensive review of the fundamental physics of free and forced unsteadiness, the terminology and basic equations of aerodynamics ranging from incompressible flow to hypersonics. The book also covers modern topics related to the developments made in recent years, especially in relation to wing flapping for propulsion. The book is written for graduate and senior year undergraduate students in aerodynamics and also serves as a reference for experienced researchers. Each chapter includes ample examples, questions, problems and relevant references. The treatment of these modern topics has been completely revised end expanded for the new edition. It now includes new numerical examples, a section on the ground effect, and state-space representation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a solid and unitary mathematical foundation of the basic and advanced principles of aerodynamics. The densities of the fundamental solutions are determined from singular integral equations. The fundamental solutions method in aerodynamics was considered for the first time and used by the author in over 30 papers published in prestigious journals (e.g. QAM, AIAA, ZAMM, etc) in order to develop a unitary theory. The boundary element method is used for numerical approximations in compressible aerodynamics. The text incorporates several original contributions, among other traditional mathematical methods. The book also represents a comprehensive presentation of research results since the seminal books on aerodynamics of Ashley and Landahl (1965) and Katz & Plotkin (1991). A rigorous mathematical approach is used to present and explain classic and modern results in this field of science. The author has therefore conceived several appendices on the Distribution Theory, the singular Integral Equations Theory, the Finite Part, Gauss Quadrature Formulae, etc. The book is concluded by a relevant bibliographical list which is especially useful for researchers. The book is aimed primarily at applied mathematicians, aeronautical engineers and space science researchers. The text may be used also as a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical foundations fo aerodynamics, by graduate students n engineering and fluid dynamics with a strong mathematical background.
