Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines modularisation in the German system of initial vocational education and training – an issue that is a matter of intense debate by educationists and politicians in Germany. After examining the underlying concept of modularisation, Hubert Ertl looks at approaches to it in Spain, Scotland, France and the Netherlands, before examining in detail the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) framework in England and Wales. The author demonstrates how the strengths and weaknesses of NVQs (and their functional position within the education and training system) are particularly significant to the strategy of modularisation in German initial training that he goes on to propose. This strategy recommends the evolutionary development of the elements of occupational profiles into self-contained modules, and identifies the ways in which these elements have to be transformed in order to fulfil the functions of modules in a modularised training system. The author hopes that the restructured system may incorporate modules developed in co-operation with European partners and so link to other national training systems.

Book excerpt: 'Assessment and Learning is a useful and inspiring book for everyone concerned with the field of assessment and provides a comprehensible overview of the contemporary developments in the field of educational assessment, particularly assessment for learning'- Studies In Educational Evaluation `Assessment for learning has come to play a significant role in learning and teaching and the Assessment Reform Group has played a pivotal role in this change. In Assessment and Learning past and present members of the group explore the implications of this change for practice, policy and research, in a way that is insightful, accessible and challenging' - David Bartlett, President - The Association for Achievement and Improvement through Assessment (AAIA) The only book of its kind to provide a comprehensive overview of assessment used to support learning, Assessment and Learning makes this area accessible and understandable for a wide range of users. Rather than looking at assessment from a technical perspective, this book links it to the context in which it is most important: learning. This new and unique text is a major source of practice-based theory on assessment for learning, a formative assessment approach to support individual development and motivate learners. Key areas covered in the book include: - the practice of assessment for learning in the classroom and its power to enhance outcomes - developing and maintaining motivation for learning, drawing on the key messages from research - the role of assessment for learning in teachers’ professional learning and classroom practice - assessment and theories of learning, using up-to-date research to consider the reliability and validity of assessment and to debunk some of the myths about the reliability of assessments external to the classroom - assessment policies across the four countries of the UK and selected European countries, with a commentary on the assessment context in the US The book is a hugely important output from the internationally known Assessment Reform Group (ARG), which is influential in the field of assessment and education policy and practice in the UK, with related developments as far afield as Australia, Hong Kong, the US and Canada. The group carries out research in order to reach policy-makers in government, and also works closely with teachers and local authority staff. Assessment and Learning will prove a very valuable resource for a wide variety of people involved in teaching, learning and assessment whether as practitioners, researchers or policy-makers.

Book excerpt: In the World Library of Educationalists series, international experts themselves compile career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces – extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, major theoretical and practical contributions – so the world can read them in a single manageable volume. Readers will be able to follow the themes and strands and see how their work contributes to the development of the field. In a collection of her most influential work spanning nearly four decades, Patricia Broadfoot applies her trademark sociological and comparative perspective to empirical studies at every level of the educational system. From her classic long-term study of the impact of changing national assessment policies on pupils and teachers in the classrooms of England and France to her sustained championship of the need for a better understanding of the impact of assessment on learning, Broadfoot has consistently championed the need for a more developed sociological understanding of assessment. Broadfoot’s accessible writing offers insights that are as novel as they are important for the education of future generations. This book allows readers to follow themes and strands across Patricia Broadfoot’s career and will be of interest to all followers of her work and any reader interested in the development of teaching, learning and assessment.
