Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Electrolytic Dissociation and Some of Its Applications At the time when this book first appeared in 1900, the Theory of Electrolytic Dissociation was recognized by physical chemists to be a well-established and fundamental generalization. They regarded it not only as one of the three or four generalizations upon which the new physical chemistry rests, but as being of scarcely less importance for the whole subject of general inorganic chemistry. At that time the wide-reaching significance of this theory for general chemistry was not fully appreciated by those who have to teach this subject. In the last few years a marked change has come about. The Theory of Electrolytic Dissociation has found its way not only into the teaching of advanced inorganic chemistry, but is now introduced by the progressive teachers into their elementary courses. This change has been brought about largely by the recognition of the fact that this generalization correlates great masses of facts which hitherto have been regarded as more or less disconnected, and thus an important step is taken towards placing chemistry on the basis of an exact science. The recognition of the fact that it is the charged parts or ions, and not the uncharged atoms or molecules that are the chemically active agents, has changed, fundamentally, the teaching and study of general chemistry. The next few years will probably see a still more general adoption of the newer conceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The method of presentation is that which they have found service able in enabling their students to comprehend the main facts which are today generally accepted as supporting the Theory, and to understand its application to important types of chemical change. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electrolytic Dissociation Theory: With Some of Its Applications In this little treatise the authors have sought to bring together, in small compass, material relating to the Electrolytic Dissociation Theory which is now somewhat widely distributed throughout many of our excellent textbooks. The method of presentation is that which they have found serviceable in enabling their students to comprehend the main facts which are today generally accepted as supporting the Theory, and to understand its application to important types of chemical change. While the book has been written primarily for the use of students, the authors have also kept in mind its probable usefulness to the teacher in preparatory school or college, who may desire to gain in a short time an acquaintance with the fundamental facts and principles in this interesting field. In this connection, however, they desire to express their firm conviction that this Theory should be touched upon in only the most elementary way in the secondary schools; but this does not, of course, make it less necessary that the well-informed teacher should be prepared to meet the inquiries of the occasional unusually mature and thoughtful pupil. More has been included in this manual than the authors have found it advisable for the college student who is just beginning the study of chemical science to attempt to master, and quite as much as many students who have already had a year of chemical experience in a preparatory school will be able to thoroughly understand. Our experience has shown, however, that it is easier to maintain the interest of the thoughtful pupil if answers to some of the questions suggested to him by the discussions in the main body of the text are placed at his hand, when it is possible to do this without going too far afield. Most of the material of this nature has been printed in smaller type, and may be omitted without loss of continuity; and it is believed that in the course of a year of study the college student (even the beginner in chemistry, if he has some knowledge of physics) can be brought to understand the essential principles included in the main text. To insure this it is necessary that the instructor should lose no opportunity throughout his course to emphasize the application of a principle, after it has once been introduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction to the Theory of Electrolytic Dissociation If A and B have different volumes, kinetic equi librium is still Obtained between the gases in A and B; and, as before, the concentration of either gas becomes and remains constant throughout the Whole space. Avogadro's Law states that, at the same tempera ture and pressure, equal volumes of gases contain the same number of molecules. The concentrations Of the gases may thus be stated molecularly. Each gas, then, diffuses through the other until every unit volume throughout the space A B contains the same number of its molecules. Object of chemical analysis. Chemical analysis consists in the systematic treatment of a given substance or mixture with selected substances, in order to determine its Simpler components by the phenomena accompanying this treatment. When the analysis is limited to the designation of the components it is termed qualita tive, and has to do solely with the determination of their nature. On the other hand, quantitative analysis, as the name implies, deals with the amounts of the individual constituents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry It follows from the above statement that the theoretical part of the subject is distributed throughout the book. The different topics are dealt with as Opportunity offers, but the treatment of any particular subject is postponed till facts illustrating it have been mentioned. The subject in question is then considered as fully as space permits - a mode of procedure which appears preferable to dealing with it in a fragmentary manner in different parts of the book. The latter method may usefully be employed for lectures, but the former method greatly increases the value of the book for purposes of reference and revision. As regards the order, I have also been guided to some extent by the historical development of the science. Subject to the above considerations, the more important branches of chemical theory, including the Principles of Chemical Equilibrium, the determination of Molecular Weights in Solu tion, Electrolysis and Electrolytic Dissociation, are introduced at a fairly early stage of the work, and their applications are repeatedly illustrated in the latter part of the book. The Periodic System is described after the non-metals, and serves as the basis for the discussion of the metals and their com pounds. One of the main tasks of a teacher is so to familiarize the student with a general principle that he learns to apply it with confidence. The mere statement of a principle, in the expectation that the student will straightway apply it in his later work, is useless. It will be found that the subjects usually included in an Elementary Course, such as Stage I. Of the Board of Education, are all dealt with in the early part of the book, and the more advanced work in the later chapters. Further division of the subject into stages leads inevitably to the result that information regarding any important element has to be sought for in different parts of the book, thus rendering it much less useful for purposes of reference and revision.
