Zuerst werden die beiden Autoren und ihre Werke kurz vorgestellt, wobei das besondere Interesse beider Dramatiker an der Geschichte der USA im Vordergrund steht. Die Fragestellung der Arbeit wird wie folgt formuliert: Wie wird die Vergangenheit in "Angels in America" und in "The Crucible" dargestellt? Welche Unterschiede gibt es zwischen den beiden Autoren und welche Einsichten in Fragen der amerikanischen Identität gewähren sie? Im zweiten Kapitel wird Millers Bild vom Amerika der Puritaner während der Kolonialzeit diskutiert. Sein Stück behandelt die Hexenjagd in Salem im Jahre 1692 und bietet daher einen ausführlichen Eindruck dieser Geschichtsperiode. Millers Darstellungen werden mit Kushners eher gering gehaltenen Anspielungen auf die frühe Entstehung und Entwicklung Amerikas verglichen. Das dritte Kapitel befasst sich mit McCarthyism und mit Amerika zu Beginn des Kalten Krieges. Da Arthur Millers Stück eine Allegorie auf die Hysterie während des antikommunistischen Kreuzzuges des Senators McCarthy in den 50er Jahren darstellt, werden die Parallelen zwischen Salem und dem Nachkriegsamerika analysiert. Tony Kushner beschäftigt sich ebenfalls mit McCarthyism, indem er zwei Zeitzeugen in seinem Stück auftreten lässt: Roy Cohn, der McCarthys Kollege und Vertrauter war und Ethel Rosenberg, ein Opfer des Antikommunismus. Die Ausführungen beider Dramatiker plädieren für die Wichtigkeit der Vergangenheit für Gegenwart und Zukunft Amerikas. Die Administration Ronald Reagans ist im vierten Kapitel von Bedeutung, da sich die Handlung von Angels in America primär zwischen 1985 und 1986 abspielt. Kushner verurteilt den Zeitgeist des extremen Konservatismus, des Individualismus und das Versagen Reagans im Angesicht der AIDS-Epidemie. This theoretical exploration serves a double purpose: first, it is meant to provide a statement of the definitions and concepts central to this study, such as political discourse, political theatre, and postmodern theatre; second, it offers the tools of analysis by which to read and analyze Tony Kushner’s postmodern, politically-oriented texts. Through this, the book defines the major features of Kushner’s postmodern theatre and explores how he theatricalizes politics. American drama in the 1980s and the 1990s witnessed a noticeable thematic shift from the exclusively personal plays and musicals that once dominated American theatre for a long period of time to an increasing number of plays which put greater emphasis on exploring issues and questions of socio-political interest. As a result of this thematic shift, the predominantly private settings and familial character relationships of the traditional family play have been replaced by a great variety of public settings and non-familial characters. Tony Kushner’s theatre is a pioneering attempt in this respect. In Kushner’s theatre, there is no room for the traditional family plays which dominated the American stage in the 1960s and 1970s. Kushner has found that there is not enough political discourse in contemporary American Theatre. For this reason, he writes his plays to shed special light on the politics of American society in the 1980s, the 1990s, and in the beginnings of the 21st century.

Interestingly, not so much has been said about his Jewish background and its impact on his dramatic work. Especially, his most acknowledged play "Angels in America - A Gay Fantasia on National Themes" which is mainly set in New York City "this strange place, in the melting pot where nothing melted" as Rabbi Isidor Chemelwitz observes in the first scene of "Millennium Approaches", is highly concerned with Judaism in general and American Jewry in particular. Naturally, different readings of Kushner's two-part play are possible. Nevertheless, it is crucial to reveal and analyze the importance of the Jewish tone and setting in "Angels in America" to fully understand Kushner's complex work. Kushner picks out the topic of religion and traditional heritage in our secular, modern world as one of his central themes. As Hilary de Vries wrote in her Chicago Tribune critique, "Kushner credits much of his interest in religion to his family background as part of the little known but thriving Jewish community in [Lake Charles] Louisiana." When Kushner moved to New York City in 1974, the Jewish population of the city was over one million making it the largest Jewish community in the world. Even though "Kushner struggles with an ambivalence toward Judaism due to homophobic traditions within his faith," as James Fisher stated, he nevertheless strongly connects to his own Eastern European roots.
